I find it unfortunate because several teams are likely to movie moves after their arbitration cases are settled. More time, more suitors. Unless you want to take your chances.

but I think gorton knows what options are on the table and if there are potential deals that need to work for other teams to take care of other issues. he should hopefully know if the buyouts can be avoided even if the deals haven't been officially made yet

Screw it. I'm on Team Shattenkirk Rebound (at least offensively).
I could see him rebound on another team. As of right now we have 2 better RHS PPQB’s in DeAngelo and Trouba. Fox will be up there in a year or so as well. We don’t have any solid defensive LHD to pair him with either and I doubt he ends up with Skjei as his partner.

Personally, I think any Kreider deal should include Smith, Staal, Namestnikov or Shattenkirk. Kreider is an asset and a conduit to offload one of those contracts.

That would be horrific asset management by JG. Kreider has defined value. Teams know his style of play, how well he fits in a top 6 role, and what is worth is. You don't diminish that by "attaching an anchor" when you're technically still in a building mode. Especially when the contracts you're trying to move expire within the next year or two.

We've certainly gotten better this summer, but we're far from Cup contenders. Why not just move Kreider for his market value and let those contracts run their course? By that time, we'll be primed for a playoff run with money coming off the books and the assets we received for Kreider that much closer to helping.

I think every contract 5 years in length or less is insured by the NHL. Beyond that, it's up to the team. The Blue Jackets didn't insure the Nathan Horton contract.

I could be wrong but I don't think it was related to contract length and it's a bit more complicated than that.

Horton had shoulder surgery right after signing that deal with CBJ and had chronic shoulder issues throughout his career. From what I've read, NHL teams use the NHL's group policy insurance and when CBJ went to add Horton's contract to the policy that year, they would've had to pay a high premium with a recurrence of that shoulder injury not being covered under the policy.

So basically CBJ said screw it since he'd be out for most of the year recovering from surgery anyway...then he wound up retiring with a degenerative back problem.

Uh....no...that's my point. I'd take less for Kreider if it meant attaching an anchor.
Uh you had us trading for guys like Steel and Greenway  we probably wouldn’t get prospects like that for just Kreider, what the hell do you think he’s gonna return by himself? Jack Hughes?

Kreider + Smith gets us like a 2nd round pick at best.

Much like when the Rangers traded Stepan, sometimes you set a deadline for yourself and take the best offer you have by that point. I don't really think at this point anything is going to change.

You already have 2 studs on the right side in trouba and DeAngelo.

Your top D Prospect is 21 years old playing in World championships without missing a beat. He’s a right D. His specialty is the PP.

You need 5 or 6 mil in cap space.

Look tried to find a trade partner got zero takers. Why make this so difficult. You buyout shattekirk. You try and finalize a deal for namestnikov or Strome in a trade.

IMO if we wanted to deal Kreider we would have already. The Signing of trouba contrary to what the media is for some reason pretending like a crazy wrench throne into our plans (duh we all knew he was going to get signed to an 8 mil aav) wasn’t news. If they really wanted to move CK they would have. My guess. They didn’t get the deal they wanted and he’s too good to give away more value in keeping him.

This shouldn’t be so hard. You buyout shattenkirk after the Buchnevich deal is finalized. That’s all there is too it.

With the cap trending the way it is, nobody is going to want middling salary like Smith.

They either want guys good enough to warrant huge money or guys they don't have to pay much at all.

They're saving on the former with the latter.

Random proposal:

Would you do Staal and Smith for Kyle Turris? Brings us a RH who could potentially play 2C, but his contract is very gross.
I don't think I would. Would be nice for the two years, but beyond that you're probably taking on a pretty bad contract in years we're hoping to be pretty serious about that winning thing.
