Random proposal:

Would you do Staal and Smith for Kyle Turris? Brings us a RH who could potentially play 2C, but his contract is very gross.

turris is signed for 5 more years @ $6 mil per. it would be cheaper to buyout both staal and smith and deal with the dead space for 4 years

If the organization is high enough on the idea Rykov can win the third pair LHD minutes out of training camp, then they should buy out both Staal and Smith (while still exploring trades for Namestnikov).

Skjei-Trouba
Hajek-Shattenkirk/Deangelo
Rykov-Fox

Give Shattenkirk the chance to compete with Deangelo/Fox for minutes. If Shatty impresses, he builds up his trade value in season or gives JG a chance to explore Deangelo's market.

I think the defense at this point is addition by subtraction. Having a young forward group and blueline that can skate would do wonders for Hank.

Tbh, I'm gonna be pretty mad if we gave Trouba 7 x 8 and Kreider ends up elsewhere for around the same.

has nothing to do with trouba they decided on panarin over kreider. can't have 2 aging wingers making that much $$ on the back end of their deals

Why?

1 is 25yo just entering his prime

2 is 28yo disappears throughout the season and in game and contract will take him through mid 30s.

They both score basically the same amount of points and 1 is a defenseman the other a forward.

To be honest I like krieder but if he wants Anders Lee type contract which I'm sure someone will offer him, I'll be happy when hes with another team.

They'll cost the same and Kreider is a better player who impacts the game more across the board.

I'd say they impact the game the same. When krieder is on he I pacts the game, but more often than not do you see krieder out there? Hes a Houdini, you see him for a moment then the rest if the game, nowhere to be found.

You really want to sign a player like that at 28yo to a 7y 7m aav contract? We would be regretting that very quickly.

We are a rebuilding team. We signed panarin. With krieder`s money.

We're a rebuilding team and I was on board with the idea of moving on from Kreider to facilitate the rebuild and our cap situation, but here we are spending money anyway.

We are spending money on players who have a long term future for us. a legit top 20 player in the league and a 25yo #2 defenseman.

I'd be okay with signing krieder to a 4yr 5m aav contract but he wants to cash in and will get 7yr 7m aav. Krieder for all the love he gets, does not deserve that type of money. Paying a guy who disappears for most of the season and for long stretches in games who will be 35 when his contract is over is just not smart. He will quickly deteriorate in his physicality and speed. Just like many others have before him.

i love kreider and badly wish they could find a way to keep him on a 5 year deal but he won't go that short..

that said your comparison is kreider vs panarin...not kreider vs trouba. panarin is the guy they signed that is forcing kreider out
