Not a great trade but nothing outrageous either...

Man this team would look different if we drafted JJ Peterka and Faber with our 2020 2nd rounders... Alas, we will never know so might as well right the ship now.

As much as I’ve tried to like jarventie im not sure he has the will and strength to make it in the nhl. And who knows about his health. Obvious mistake passing on stutzle’s buddy peterka at the time.
I think I like the trade.

Scouting report when they were drafted

Xavier Bourgault(1st round 22OA 2021):
An offensive winger who thrives with his off-puck movement and ability to find space. He locates his shots well and has shown more and more creativity as he’s matured as a player.

Jake Chiasson(4th round 416oOA 2021):
A bit raw at this point, plays a gritty and tenacious style. Good shot and makes smart passes in the offensive zone. Good complementary winger on a scoring line.
Bourgault seems to be more active and involved than Jarventie, who seemed asleep in his early days. I was never a fan of his play. I also did not understand the rationale for selecting him where we did.

Chiasson looks like an addition for Belleville next season, nothing more.

The 4th round pick is likely going to amount to nothing at all.

We might have won this trade if Bourgault blossoms. Time will tell.

Don’t particularly care but Jarventie was the most exciting boom or (much more likely) bust forward in the system IMO.

Kind of odd for Edmonton to target a PP specialist as well.

Basically a boom/bust prospect with 3 camps before waivers in exchange for a (arguably better) boom/bust prospect with 1

I dont really get why 4th and Chiasson were involved but maybe he will surprise us
I mean the types of players they are Jarventie would have a longer development curve than a small skill guy. Jarventie needed to grow into his frame, he was showing consistent improvement while Bourgoult is regressing. To me Jarventie should have had more value, I really dont like it. Jarventie was always a project. Plus ottawa adds the pick.

This is probably my least favorite move yet. But I get labelled here for liking everything with this management team, which I dont. But whatever, I have seen the logic in most of Staios's decisions. This one leaves me scratching my head.

With Staios being in the Oilers organization he probably got a good look at him, but I still dont like it.

Does Bourgault play centre or wing? Says he’s a centre online but not sure if that’s the case in the AHL so just wondering.

Staois tragetting right shot depth thorhgout our lineup - Perron, Amadio, Jenssen, Gaudette, Yakemchuk and now the trade for the two right shot forwards

Nice work Steve - basically his summer is get a goalie and a bunch of right shot players

Based on prospect types and historical progression its far more likely Jarventie turns out than Bourgault. Jarventie came from a better draft and has shown some elite characteristics in his shot size and skill compared to a small skill guy who typically makes it right away if they dont they are a dime a dozen.

It's also possible that jarventie wanted to move on. Remember, he was close buddies with lassi Thomson, who wanted out for a couple years. Bourgeault also fits the style Staios is looking for.

He also would have seen Bourgault's performance at the Memorial Cup in 2022. This doesn't strike me as guy our scouting staff has wanted for a long time, given the type of player he is and the types of players we draft. Good chance it's a guy Staois has liked over the years.

Maybe with Savoie (small, skilled RW) coming in, Staois saw an opportunity to get Bourgault (less small, skilled RW) from them.

I come in peace.

Bourgault was a guy that I absolutely loved in his draft year. It was impressive to watch him in the QMJHL playoffs for Shawinigan where he had 97 points in 59 games that year. He's an incredibly smart player that reads the play well. He's a complimentary player that needs talent to play with but has great hands and uses open ice well. He was absolutely dynamite with Mavrik Bourque.

Unfortunately he didn't get the opportunity in the AHL. Our coach doesn't give him powerplay time which probably hurt his confidence. Edmonton seemed to want to develop him into something he's not. We tried turning him into a defensive pk guy but that's not his game. IMO.

Also, It sounds like he still needs to work on his conditioning and develop a little more physically if he wants to make the next jump. He's not the biggest guy and I think he's struggling to play his game with bigger faster players. He needs to outthink guys to beat them as he isn't slow but he's not going to burn past guys either.

Basically we haven't seen the same player at the AHL level that we did in the QMJHL.

I think Jarventie is a better fit in Edmonton than he is here to be honest. It’s hard to see where he fits with our current group, the team basically exclusively drafts guys with size and a good shot so he’s redundant on our roster.

I think as you start looking at a post-Giroux/Perron world and rounding out the top 9, you need guys who are hard on pucks, can make plays, have speed and that win their battles to complement our group.

I can’t speak to who the better prospect is but on the surface I was never really quite sure where Jarventie would fit here even if he did hit so it makes some sense.

Is Jackson going to overhaul the dev system.. that seems to be an issue.... of draft and develop... you want players to develop to their strengths

LHD and puck carrier: Sanderson, Chabot, Klevin or Brannstrom

you need to counter that with RH centers; Pinto and no one else last year. So you try and add RH centers

with Tara gone, Joseph gone. You need 3 more RW. And ideally RH. Although you would like one of them to be left handed.

Maybe Steve S. does know which end of a hockey stick is up

Basically, yes. They hired Kalle Larsson as their senior director of player development. Larsson spent 9 years in the USHL helping the Dubuque Fighting Saints from a player personal role where he did such a good job that he was promoted to GM and then even president of hockey operations. We've already seen Larsson impact the Oilers as he knew Matt Savoie incredibly well and Dubuque drafted him where he put up 38 points in 34 USHL games. As a 16-year-old he was 4th in team scoring and actually had one of the best +/-'s on the team which is pretty impressive. I actually think grabbing Savoie might have been the writing on the wall for Bourgault.

This comes after the Oilers parting ways with their old director of scouting Tyler Wright who worked a lot with Ken Holland. Wright focused a lot on goal scoring and size - he likes natural athletes (Broberg and Holloway) but ill get to that in a second. We've replaced Wright with a much more analytically focused scout in Rick Pracey. Pracey focuses a lot on development curves and acknowledging that different types of players develop differently and have different kinds of paths to the NHL.

Also, with Jackson at the helm, the Oilers have been very active with their moves. We saw them trade in the 1st round to go and get a prospect that their scouts liked. He isn't afraid to make moves and listen to the guys in the room. Jackson saw the Oilers pipeline as an issue and went to work to try and immediately correct it. Keith Gretzky is also overseeing our minor league team and apparently, they wanted Bourgault to come in stronger this season, but he hasn't done that.

Basically, you can see the Oilers management group having their fingerprints all over these moves. I think it could be a great opportunity for Bourgault to play closer to home and develop with some more talented linemates in a more offensive setting. I'll be rooting for XB. I always kinda of saw him being a giroux-lite if he ends up making it.
