So the Vancouver native gave us a home town discount.
The home town boy said f**k you give me my money.

Thank you and Congratulations Mo :thumbu:
It is West Vancouver native, lol.

Pretty much, home town kids, either take what they think they deserve or leave town to get the best contract possible.
I really think we need to look at players contract before saying they like to be a Leafs.

He isn’t the reason they haven’t progressed but he still part of the problem. I just don’t understand why they are so married to these players.

Cap hit is fair but the term is gross. Rielly looks like he has lost a step physically and I think his best days are behind him. Oh well, next management groups problem.

He has easily been the best and most consistent defenseman over our 5 playoff series and likely our best player.

He is one of the few players that plays better in the playoffs than the regular season which is something sorely missing from our team over the past 5 years.

how do you pay him less than Mrazek ?

if of course he continues to out play him

Campbell, Sandin, & Liljegren will need raises of some type next year.
Guess that'll be around $3M extra to find?

Now that Rielly is committed to staying I agree with moving Muzzin ASAP. This is also because I have no faith in this current roster winning in the playoffs. However Muzzin's departure would leave a gaping hole that the team will have to fill eventually and there's no one in the pipeline to fit that bill.

The plan is to likely keep Muzzin next year, and move him in the last year of his deal. After July 1, 2023 he submits a 10 team no trade list and only makes 2 mill in salary after we pay out his bonus.

If he is still somewhat capable, we may even be able to get some value out of him at that point, similar to Duncan Keith. Or at least not have to give up anything to dump him. If he has fallen off of a cliff, even then it is likely not overly substantial given his salary is not that large and it is only one year.

That gives Sandin and Dermott 1.5 years to develop into at least one top 4 caliber defenseman.

great news, great & teamfriendly deal. and big thanks to mo for not testing the market and squeezing out another 1-2 mil per year.

Mo grew up in an extremely affluent area of Vancouver. It is probably one of the most elite areas in the country to be honest. I really don't think money is everything to him, as I assume he has always been very well off.

Mo wants to be a Leaf. Something that is extremely hard to find. To me, he is the ultimate leader. I will be buying his jersey next 100%
His dad is a die hard leaf fan with being From Hamilton, Morgan has mentioned that in interviews before

I actually think this will loosen up Mo a bit going forward. I think having the fanbase get behind him signing this team friendly deal in conjunction with having this one headache over and done with will bring the best out of him.

I've always liked Mo being a Vancouver guy, but he just embodies exactly what we want future Leafs to be. Proud Maple Leafs.

Yep this is more than reasonable. Dubas said he wasn’t comfortable letting him walk for nothing. I was thinking trade after the start but good for him. Fair deal both sides.

I had him pegged at 7.25-7.5.

To be fair, that's a reasonable contract. I like Rielly and his passion for the team.

I'm guessing they're going to make a tough decision on one of Marner/Nylander in the offseason. This is their last chance.

I didn't watch the games so I don't know for certain but wasn't Nylander one of your better playoff performers? Plus he costs less. I don't understand the logic of moving him but I am very much out of the loop.

The more I see this contract, the more I think it's the wrong term too. Any injury that could effect his mobility could be dire, he doesn't have the defensive instincts to make up for it.

Waiting 'til season's end/TDL (depending on what the plan is) might have been better, cause then you'd really have an idea if the team needs a full retool or not.
It works both ways, if the Leafs win a round or two in the playoffs, Reilly will priced himself out of town. Also, if the Leafs don't do well, he might walk for nothing unless the Leafs really tanks and he is traded at the TDL.
It is a solid deal considering all the other deals that were signed a few months ago.

Stunned that Dubas didn't let him walk. I think this makes Morgan the first pending UFA to be signed by Dubas. I guess the "own-rental" thing didn't work out as well as the Shanaplan said it would. Lesson learned.

For a player of Morgan's pedigree $7.5 mil is extremely fair. I like the contract.

Campbell? For sure.

Sandin and Liljegren? Very likely QO accepted territory, unless they go on significant production boosts. They'll be around what they are making now unless you give them term.

Engvall and Kase will be a little harder to determine.

Muzzin, Spezza and Simmonds were retained while being pending UFAs from the top of my head.

Literally nothing to complain about, this is great news and I hope the team is as happy as we are.

Guess I should pickup his jersey...

You know what f*** it, I'll go on the record and say it right now. I think this contract is going to be utter garbage in ~2 years time.

I'll give it 3-4 years. I don't care that the rest of the league is handing out awful 8 year contracts like candy. They almost all stink and this one will be no different.

But sure, it doesn't really matter because Dubas won't be around in 3 years and if the team hasn't made it deep into the playoffs by then, well...

of course there was a massive discount

Elliott just reported that his home town team Van was preparing to offer him at least 10m x 7 yrs if he became a ufa , lol .

I agree a top minute dman who plays both sides of the puck at 7.5 is a great deal.

haha ya he is, I think his fist pump when Mo was drafted by us was the dead giveaway LOL
I think the fist pump was due to having direct flights between Van and TO, lol. In one interview, I think both his parents said they hope Reilly get drafted by a team where there is a direct flight from Vancouver bc they hated layover time at airport.

I was on board with trading him, but happy he that he won't be wasted as an own rental. He deserves his money, nice to see a player that wants to be here and doesn't bend the team over. He's in the core 4 now, need a shakeup upfront to make cap room.

Almost seals the fate of one of the 4 Mega paid centers and wingers. Nylander will bring a bigger return. From a business standpoint he's going to be gone. Marner is overpaid and now under-performing. Leaf fans are going to be angry about losing Nylander, but would you rather him than Rielly?
