That's a big discount actually. Go look at the craziness around the league. No real discount for the team. Fair contract I guess

Because saying he's looked awful this year would be an understatement. He's also 32 with a lot of miles on him.
You could say that for anyone. Not really. If he gets injured and is out for a length of time they are screwed.... I would have done a 6x 6.5mill

Getting rid of another hard worker is typical leafsKerfoot is as good as gone.
So you’re going to shed the only legit talent you have left. HmmmmBasically we have to trim even more off our already direly thin depth...
They have to offload Muzzin next year, no two ways about it.
Debates will be had on the value of this deal ad infinitum but I believe this to be a hometown discount in terms of how the UFA market goes for defensemen. I do find it hard to imagine Rielly playing his current active skating athletic type of game far into his 30's. Can he grow into a more stable calming type of game by then? I think yes but will he still be a 1st pairing type at that point?
The good news is that still buys them 3-4 years of developing D. In theory, if management does their job well we should have some nice cheap but effective D to offset Riellys eventual overpayment relative to his play. That Niemela guy looks like a steal. They'll need to stock up with guys like that. Even then, I don't see him providing less than 3-4 mil value when he's 33-34 years old. 7.5 mil isn't going to hamper us. Brodie and Muzzin will be long gone by then too. We will have money for defence. That's what 22 mil freed up from Brodie Muzzin and Tavares?Love it for the short term. The long term might be rough but at that point, you just find a place to put the money....Hello LTIR.
The best part is you just know Dubas is going to hunt for another undersized puck mover to fill in for Muzzin's departure. Now that Rielly is committed to staying I agree with moving Muzzin ASAP. This is also because I have no faith in this current roster winning in the playoffs. However Muzzin's departure would leave a gaping hole that the team will have to fill eventually and there's no one in the pipeline to fit that bill.
