It's a decent contract, no question about that. Given that it appears as though there are no replacement alternatives available for cheaper on the market, signing him was the right move. At least we don't need to hear further from the panicked people about trading him ASAP, because he hasn't signed yet. Rielly is a good Leaf, and it's nice to see a guy spend his career here. Hopefully his D game can improve some, and his offensive game get back to what it was... but if we consistently putting up 70 points, he would have cost a great deal more. Go Leafs.

Debates will be had on the value of this deal ad infinitum but I believe this to be a hometown discount in terms of how the UFA market goes for defensemen. I do find it hard to imagine Rielly playing his current active skating athletic type of game far into his 30's. Can he grow into a more stable calming type of game by then? I think yes but will he still be a 1st pairing type at that point?

Probably not, but then again, by the time that happens, one would think the cap has gone up and 7.5 mill would probably be closer to 2/3 money than #1 money.

I think he can be a top 4 guy throughout this deal, assuming injuries don't kill him. He may turn out to be more of an offensive specialist in the last few years of his deal, similar to what Yandle was for Florida before last year, but it will also likely be a contract we can move or possibly even buy out at that time.

Now that Rielly is committed to staying I agree with moving Muzzin ASAP. This is also because I have no faith in this current roster winning in the playoffs. However Muzzin's departure would leave a gaping hole that the team will have to fill eventually and there's no one in the pipeline to fit that bill.

We needed to either re-sign him or recoup assets. Couldn’t afford to lose him for nothing. Happy he’s staying at a reasonable cap hit. Let’s gooo!

Love it for the short term. The long term might be rough but at that point, you just find a place to put the money....Hello LTIR.
The good news is that still buys them 3-4 years of developing D. In theory, if management does their job well we should have some nice cheap but effective D to offset Riellys eventual overpayment relative to his play. That Niemela guy looks like a steal. They'll need to stock up with guys like that. Even then, I don't see him providing less than 3-4 mil value when he's 33-34 years old. 7.5 mil isn't going to hamper us. Brodie and Muzzin will be long gone by then too. We will have money for defence. That's what 22 mil freed up from Brodie Muzzin and Tavares?

There's no bad news for this deal. None. We can't replace Rielly no matter how annoyed we are with his play right now. Everyone should be happy about this signing even the extreme haters.

edit- I didn't even account for the cap being higher 4+ years from now.

I KNEW he wasn't going to bend us over a barrel, this man is a TRUE Leaf, took less to stay with the team he loves.

Nobody can be upset about this contract after seeing what defenceman received this off-season 9 plus million, multiple.

He didn't take a major discount but don't kid yourself if he waited until free agency he would have recieved multiple 7x9 offers and used that against us.

Good man Morgan. Between you and Matthews for Captain one day.

I definitely had some doubt about whether or not this would materialize. Consider me pleasantly surprised and happy.

The best part is you just know Dubas is going to hunt for another undersized puck mover to fill in for Muzzin's departure.

Mo seems to be a great guy so keeping him around for another 8 years at that cap hit seems like a no brainer

There's some risk but it's one we probably needed to make looking at our defensive core

Happy to have him back, he loves the team and wants to be here so congratulations to everybody involved

Solid deal .. it had to get done
Rielly got no trade for rest of this season and 1st 6 years of new deal
Last 2 years of new Leafs got ability to trade him
Rielly also got signing bonuses in 1st 2 years of new deal
Pretty decent negotiations
I still wonder why Leafs had such a hard on for last 3 years of deal being able to trade him it did cost quite a bit of AAV
Then again I probably would have done same

I thought he might be looking for 8.5 per. I'm super happy with this. 7.5 is great compared to what some other guys have been getting.
