he gets a 2.5m raise , caps supposedly going up 1m and Kessel's retention will be off the books so that covers Rielly .

Campbell's raise will be covered if we can dump Kerfoot with no money coming back and replace him with a player from the bargain bin .

To be fair, that's a reasonable contract. I like Rielly and his passion for the team.

I'm guessing they're going to make a tough decision on one of Marner/Nylander in the offseason. This is their last chance.

Or they have to retool Muzzin, Holl, Kerfoot and Ritchie, which is a combined $13-14 million of combined decline and underperformance.

Matthews honestly could have held out for more... he is a generational player. Marner is the issue, he doesn't deserve what Matthews does, he's on a tier below as a player.

It's a fair trade off. The AAV is good for the team but anything at 8 years carries risk.
By the time its in the later part of the deal the cap should be back to rising on a yearly basis as well.

Huge morale boost for the team. They know Rielly could have left and got 8-9 mil somewhere else.

It should also put the "toxic" theories to rest. Nobody signs a retirement contract instead of taking a bigger pay day if the team is toxic. IQ close to zero for whoever thinks otherwise. Reading between the lines this group is hungry to win together.

I think they will restructure the team. And I’m not convinced Campbell is getting a huge raise
