Why would this be the case?

The cap rising 1 mil + Kessel's retention off the books almost covers the Rielly salary entirely. Trading Kerfoot would give them additional wiggle room. As would replacing Kase with a cheaper RFA next season

Because of TOR's God awful cap situation. Rielly's raise will no doubt stress the cap limits.

It's not that simple.

Is the contract fair? Yes. Did I want Reilly traded? Yes. Do I think he's terrible? Not at all. I appreciate his efforts since he's been here. It seems the Leaf roster is much like society. The haves and the have nots. It just seems one of the " haves " has to be traded eventually. I hope it's not Willy.

Not really. If he gets injured and is out for a length of time they are screwed.... I would have done a 6x 6.5mill
Lol sure, I mean ideally he’d take rolling 1 year 750k deals like spezz…..
6x6 was never going to happen, you’re a good $24m short

What a great pick Burke ended up making that draft.

I can see why we kept Morrison around, even if as Director of Pro Scouting. When we weren't going after size/grit, we actually did get a fairly decent group of prospects together... Especially considering our development department also sucked.

They are spending around 8M on Kerfoot, Holl and Ritchie. All 3 have 1 year left on their deals. All 3 are tradable to some degree.

It's probable the Leafs do look at trading someone like Marner or even Nylander though... but it's not necessary.

It's not very complicated.

We probably need all that money + more if we're going to upgrade on those respective positions.

We are? I thought we were unanimously in a bad position with our cap.

I don't think that moving Holl/Dermott plus letting Kerfoot go all of a sudden makes the cap situation better. Campbell (or another goalie) needs to be signed too.

I don't see it, but maybe others do.

I think we have about 6 million to work with at this point.

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Kerfoot - Tavares - Marner
X - Kampf - X
Ritchie - X - Simmonds

Assuming we bring back Spezza, we need to fill 2 forward spots. We have some prospects who are likely ready or close to it, as well as some RFAs who may not need much of a raise, or if they do, it'll be minimal.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - X

D we need to sign Liljgren and Sandin, but we also have 7 D currently, so we may be looking to shed a contract.

Mrazek
X

Campbell should be a priority assuming he has a good season.

There is some maneuvering to be done, but I think we are in a very good position.

At this point, with the prospects in the system and potential RFAs coming back, I think one of Dermott/Holl is expendable, and potentially Kerfoot and Ritchie are too.

some of Amirov/SDA/Robertson/Steeves/Kase/Engvall/Spezza/Holmberg should be able to fill in the gaps on forward, and who knows we may find some good value signings.

Whoa. News. Mixed feelings. Thank God it’s 8 years. He’ll be 35 at the end. Fair market value currently. Hopefully he will be a steal and worth it by the end (A few championships). He is what he, is so it’s not hidden value or banking on development at his age.

It will depend on how things go in the post season. If the team wins a round or two, it's doubtful the current front office opts to move a core piece from the forwards.

If the team flops again I'd potentially expect wider changes to the roster, especially if it leads to a new front office.

Pretty happy with this deal! Needed to happen. 7.5 seems fair. Even with his warts Rielly is an excellent player.

Not sure about upgrading per say, mostly going sideways. You can only hope that the younger players and promotions will give you similar production/value at the very least. Leafs should have Robertson and Amirov healthy and it's not impossible they impress. That's just an example.

Everyone was fighting between Tavares and Matthews as captains...

...meanwhile, I was pumping Riellys tires to be the captain. It was an easy decision to me.

I hated the Tavares pick from Day 1..... to me there were two options

1. The guy who already signed one team friendly contract and stuck with us through the "there will be pain" days
or
2. The most talented player relative to the NHL since the Original Six days. Like apologies to Mats, Dougie, Clark, Sittler they were never top 5 in the NHL players.

Nice to have Rielly staying. One of the few players on the team who has stepped up in the playoffs and appreciates what it means being a Leaf.

he's had his ups and downs, but he's arguably their best playoff performer. The Leafs need more guys who elevate their games when it matters, and losing Rielly would have been a nightmare to deal with. Plus he's just an insanely likeable guy

Some people seem to think Morgan is crap, but this has been my memory of the playoffs over the last few years too .. Morgan seems to do better in the playoffs and with him, Muzzin and Brodie as our top 3 I'm not really concerned about defense. Holl seemed better last year than this year ... but Rasmus seems better. Just need the top 3 paid forwards to perform this year.

I was dreading the possibility that the leafs would let Morgan walk at the end of this year while keeping our top forwards intact, glad to see Dubas took care of Mo.
