I hated the Tavares pick from Day 1..... to me there were two options

1. The guy who already signed one team friendly contract and stuck with us through the "there will be pain" days
or
2. The most talented player relative to the NHL since the Original Six days. Like apologies to Mats, Dougie, Clark, Sittler they were never top 5 in the NHL players.

I was the same all along.... hell I still call Reilly "Captain Morgan" at the games sometimes. Morgan or Matthews depending on which reason was more important to you for captaincy. Never should have been Tavares.

Almost seals the fate of one of the 4 Mega paid centers and wingers. Nylander will bring a bigger return. From a business standpoint he's going to be gone. Marner is overpaid and now under-performing. Leaf fans are going to be angry about losing Nylander, but would you rather him than Rielly?

The rise in cap and Kessel's retention coming off the books will alone cover Reilly's raise.

This literally adds no cap burden moving forward.

B) this leads me to believe that they see Muzzin declining or Sandin not reaching 1D level because otherwise there’s no room

Lily in particular won't be in any position to ask for more than his qualifying offer without substantially more playing time

Simple Mrazek earned his contract because of UFA status and his overall sample size. Mrazek has almost twice as many NHL games. He’s more proven. If I’m the leafs, I’m convincing Campbell to take another 1 year or 2 year deal. It’ll be hard but you have to

Marner and his father should take note on this signing. That is a team player and one that wants to wear the crest on his chest with pride. Not all about him.

BTW why the hell isn't he captain yet? He's the longest tenured player there who has been through the abyss. He has more emotion and passion in one finger than JT will ever have. Probably one of the worst captains I've ever seen in my life.

Yeah, Rielly has earned to be C more than anyone on this team. And he will be a Leaf for life, which is not certain for the rest of them.
