Seeing what comparables signed for, him coming in at $2M less is amazing. Full marks to Dubas on this one.

This should mean his career starts and ends as a Leaf. Thrilled.

Big fan of Morgan and the contract but selfishly I was hoping he would come a little closer to Ekholm in Nashville or Petry in Montreal both in the $6s

Yeah, Rielly has earned to be C more than anyone on this team. And he will be a Leaf for life, which is not certain for the rest of them.

Rielly's not the captain because he's stuck his foot in my mouth talking to the media before. The captain needs to be a diplomat. In the dressing room, who is wearing the "C" is irrelevant, the leaders will be leaders regardless.

Simple Mrazek earned his contract because of UFA status and his overall sample size. Mrazek has almost twice as many NHL games. He’s more proven. If I’m the leafs, I’m convincing Campbell to take another 1 year or 2 year deal. It’ll be hard but you have to
Campbell's a ufa and has never been paid so i doubt he wants to listen to bullshit fairytales about why he should take peanuts on a 2 yr deal when everyone knows the problem is the Leafs have no cap space unless they dump even more money .

Do you guys think this means that a hard decision will be made on Nylander/Marner this offseason?

Effortless skaters like Rielly age gracefully .
Look at Spezza..still getting it done at 38.
Then there is the captain...slow and awkward....and it will get worse every year.

So for me. the Rielly contract is one of the best, and the Tavares contract is one of the worst.

I read the article, but the boosted revenue then gets divided among the teams. Seattle’s hockey related revenue would have to be significantly higher than the average to impact the cap.

Its not Seattle's hockey revenue, its their 650 million expansion fee thats divided among the teams.

then you let him go and be overpaid elsewhere. Mrazek is the better goaltender statistically. But I think Campbell will take less to stay. There’s not many options where he can go and be the number 1 option. At least on a good team, where’s he gonna go? Buffalo, Chicago?

he gets a 2.5m raise , caps supposedly going up 1m and Kessel's retention will be off the books so that covers Rielly .

Campbell's raise will be covered if we can dump Kerfoot with no money coming back and replace him with a player from the bargain bin .
thats right, i completely forgot about kessels retention

i still think we are asking for too much from the bargain bin, its a risky plan

so then he can leave and sign with someone else and not be their starter either since ppl won’t be giving UFA money to a backup with a small sample size.. no matter how positive he is to his teammates.

Unless it changed since Vegas, expansion money is not hockey related revenue. It gets divided among the owners only.

Even if the expansion money did count, the cap would go up like 10 million for one year and then just come back down the next.

For next year there will need to be some contract clearing.

Kerfoot will be gone, and given that after July 1 he'll only have $750k in real money left, he'll be very tradeable.

Ritchie probably should be gone too, and hopefully he starts scoring a bit to make a 1yr/$2.5 hit attractive to some team.

Holl would also be one to probably move.

The only painful move that I see coming is trading the 33yr old Muzzin next summer - but at least given that he'll only have $6m left in real money over 2 years ($3m/yr), we should be able to get something good back for him.

Are you talking about 2022 or 2023? He has a full NTC in 2022, and in 2023 when he only has a 10 team no trade list, he only has 1 year and 2 mill in real money left after July 1.

I sincerely doubt the Leafs move Muzzin until 2023. More likely Holl + Kerfoot (or maybe Ritchie), with Liljegren in the mix to replace Holl and a number of quality forward prospects coming close to being NHL ready to replace Kerfoot/Ritchie.

People worrying about 8 years from now. Hasn’t covid taught y’all anything? Live for the moment cause you’re not even guaranteed to be here in 8 years.

Low end #1s are getting 9 mill right now. By year 6-8 of this current deal 7.5 mill is likely the going rate for #4D. It wont be as much of an albatross as you're expecting.

This team’s window is as long as the Matthews contract. It doesn’t really matter what our cap structure is once he leaves.

Good deal keeping Rielly for a solid cap number.

Great deal even year 1 does not seem to be an overpay. as the years go by this contract will be just better and better. Rielly 8 years from now will still only be making 7.5.
