Not my style but I understand what he was trying to do. Putting your best offer on the table from the start. Fine, as long as he doesn’t ever budge, ever.

But that number was way too high to begin with. Even a lower number would’ve been more than generous. Dubas could’ve offered a lower number, and then continued to stick with that all throughout the process, and then the Leafs wouldn’t have to overpay Marner an egregious $11 million on October 1 if he did later accept.

Just utter incompetence from Dubas, and utter greed from Marner, and neither the two of them walk away from this looking good. Although to be fair to Marner, I’d rather be seen as greedy than incompetent.

No...

According to McKenzie, Dreger, and now Mirtle:

Isn't it funny how people that back Marner always seem to dismiss any kind of rumor of an over priced offer as just conjecture and not at all based on leaks? Mirtle has been leaking stuff for Dubas for a while now and it's pretty obvious that Dubas/Shanny have had enough of the MM camp and their tactics. When this is all over I think Mirtle will be proven to be correct.

Edit: Not saying above poster is a Marner backer...its his reply to others that cannot believe anything that is ever reported as possibly being true as the MM backers.

Probably because we just found out he turned down 7x11 and apparently wants somewhere between 10-11M on a 3 year deal
Exactly. It's going to be a bridge that will be all out of whack with reality.

I'm not in the room with them but fortunately we have common sense available (some of us anyway) and that would dictate that the reason Marner turned down the 11 x 7 offer is because they think they can do even better....

Hence that's the base they're negotiating with Dubas from.

If you can't understand that, God help you.
I don't know why he can't understand this.

please don't overpay more than has already been quoted. $11x7 is a pretty big overpay but now we've had time to adjust to it, I guess if it gets him back into camp just get it done

It is not the way Shanny operates. Not a remote chance he leaks anything. and I can't see Dubie doing it either. He will follow suit from Shanny.

To make it clear no player is above the team. And that the team will not be held hostage by a young RFA. That alone is worth making a point out of Marner.

Marner is thinking exactly the way you are, which is why he is being unreasonable in the first place. He’s thinking “the Leafs can’t afford NOT to have me, so I’ll just gouge them.” No. I’d him out on his BS and make him sit.
Im thinking about winning. You are thinking about giving people object lessons that have no bearing on the team. The differences we are talking about amounts to a plug

Going back to when he was drafted and people were complaining they didn’t take hanafin instead I’ve always been a huge Marner fan.
Drove to London a half dozen times to see him back then and I’m officially out.
Any player that turns down 11 x 7 is entirely to selfish to handcuff your team trying to build around.
I think at this point I’d honestly be happier to hear some trade package rumours.
What would the coyotes wild or islanders offer for him?
Let him go be the richest winger in league history somewhere else

I think it ends up being 3 yrs at around $9M. 7M yr 1, 8M yr 2 and 12M in yr 3. 27/3 for a 9M AAV. Marner gets his short term that he wants, Dubas gets a win on AAV. I think yr 3 has to be higher than Matthews AAV. Then the QO is 12M for year 4.

That IMO for the Leafs is good, it avoids Marner sitting out. And you have 3 years to see if he is really as good as last year would suggest. It also staggers the contract end dates. Yeah he can become UFA in 4 years - so what, you are letting the other one become one in 5.

If it goes to QO in yr 4 it is 39 M total over 4 years still almost 2m/yr less than matthews.
All good to me

Yes, but a team trading for him would know how long he is under contract for.

So if it's 11.7 on a 7 year deal with no clause until the 4th./5th. year Leafs have all that time to move him.
They would have to move Kapanenn/Johnsson/Kerfoot to fit that in

Hard pass.

If it's in the ballpark of $10.5 x 6 years (my original estimate of the contract), I'm happy.

This team needs to get focused on the season ahead.

Doubtful.

I think you'll still find something to complain about and to frame Dubas as a loser in the negotiation.

Looking at your post history, I'm not sure there is anything that will make you happy.

Here's hoping though.
