Mmm, burgers. Love me some burgers. With due respect to Superboys (gotta get there) I'm a south end guy.
VJ's is pretty good, but only hit it from work occasionally as I'm downtown. It's a toss up between going there and the White Star Diner which is a little closer. Really like the White Star as I discovered it when it was on Albert in a tiny little place but now they are on Kennedy in a much more diner sized place. Excellent milkshakes at White Star.
Dairi-Wip - have been going here for years, including one inauspicious night where I walked there from a bar up the road to sober up a bit.
Johnny's Marion - this one's pretty new to me, but a buddy swears by it and turns out it is very good. Basically right across from Dairi-Wip.
Red Top - I still like Red Top and we go there once a month probably. I don't mind the burger size/bun ratio but I do agree with the general comments on here. I get a platter with fries and cole slaw and I don't need more burger so I'm happy. Service, like anywhere, can at times be sketchy lately but that's been unusual for us. I got 40+ years going here so there's a huge nostalgia factor as well.
Georges on St. Mary's - I think the George that opened the one on St. Anne's across from the McDonald's (now Dad's restaurant I believe) is still in here occasionally. That one opened I believe around 1980 (St. Anne's) and I've been a fan ever since. So, so, so many nights in that one after the bar. That's when they did their best business. Burger, fries and gravy and playing video games while you waited for your order. So many quarters. George sold to Gary, a guy I went to high school with who eventually sold to the guy who now owns Dad's and he can't believe the guy closes at 10:00. Gary now works for True North btw. But now we hit the one on St. Mary's north of the mall. I think their burgers are quite good, but more often interested in the chili fries or fries with gravy. I wouldn't argue with folks saying you can get the same style of burger elsewhere that's better but it's still pretty good.
Dairy Delight - this one is on St. Anne's further south and it's really quite good as well. Nearly no space to sit but the burgers are very tasty. Not really the traditional Greek style IMO but still very enjoyable.
Roblin Grill - we found this one during burger week. Owned by a 1st Nations family I believe and we go here pretty often. It's way out near the perimeter and an easy miss if you don't know where to look (south side near the last traffic lights heading west but in a strip mall, to the east of the new vendor). I have to say the service is generally pretty slow but we don't mind as we expect it. The food is very fresh and very tasty. Not Greek style stuff but really worth a visit if you like your burgers.
Non-burger wise will vouch for Garwood Grill - very nearly a can't go wrong place for humble food. We stumbled into there after their summer closure and it was lined up. We'd been going for quite some time prior to that but little realized how popular it was with the locals. I'd been going there since my Keg days back in the 1980s.
Will also put in my vote for the Grove as being a good place to visit.
For Pizza also vote for the one inside Trans-Canada Brewing. Very good in there. Nothing like going in and ordering a pizza and then having a pint of Arrow while you wait. Oh sure you could call in the order but why bother?
Tony's Pizza on Pembina is an old standby as well. The pizza is still pretty much the same as the first time I had it in 1978 when it used to be tucked in at the end of Garry's billiards and bowling lanes (remember when it seemed like everyone smoked in the bowling alley and pool hall?). They're still in the same block even though Garry's is now long gone. Gotta love the dough ball holding up the box lid. Mine!
There's a pizza/pasta place in south St. Vital that does really good pizza too, but I can't remember the name right now. Helpful, yes?
