OT: Restaurant thread

That appears to be one of the cuisines we are lacking. There used to be one near U of M called Quattro Stagioni but it's gone. We're also in need of a Moroccan restaurant (wish we had something like Sultan's Tent in Calgary) and I still weep at the closure of Gasthaus Gutenberger. Best. Buffet. Ever. :(

I’m not sure that I can have a favourite restaurant after Sonya’s on Henderson closed down. Best burgers I’ve ever had.
I’m so mad that I never asked the owner for the recipe even when I knew he was probably closing.
When did piSonyas close down?

Best place to get a good Pizza Winnipeg?

For wood-fired style pizza, I'd say Red Ember.

Trans Canada Brewery has surprisingly fantastic pizza; the chef recently placed in a pizza championship in Italy, and opened up his own shop recently on Corydon... Tommy's, I think.

Pizzeria Gusto is also excellent.

People often cite Santa Lucia but IMHO it is nothing special and indistinguishable from a dozen other places. Not bad per se.

I used to love the Dairy Whip when I lived in St. B. Living in the North End I can attest that Superboys is far superior. Best hamburgers in the city. Juniors is about 4 or 5 on my list.

I just had a look at the menu, it looks a lot like Dairy Whip for sure but on your recommendation I'll give it a shot next. Can't have enough Greek burger joints on your list ;)

I had a friend who swore by Diana's. Never had a worse pie in my life. Maybe that's just me though.

Another vote for Superboy as the best Greek burger in town, Jax on Henderson is also very good.

actually, that's an interesting point...do you think the owner would have given you the recipe if you asked?

I'm a big fan of VJ's burgers, but have never tried Superboy. For those who have tried both places more than once, which is better?

I've tried both and VJ's wins, however I'm definitely biased because I worked in the Portage & Main area for the majority of my career and frequented VJ's many many (too many?) times so it has almost become comfort food for me...

EDIT: Found an old picture I took at VJ's back in the summer of 2014 to taunt a coworker who was stuck eating lunch at his desk... ahhh, memories... :naughty:

East Indian cuisine is a long way away from the half-price tilapia and carrots on the senior's menu at Sals ;)

LOL!

Place where I picked up a severe case of food poisoning no longer open, hint they had a fire at the restaurant back in April.

I prefer VJ's personally but have no complaints about Superboys. They are both great.

Mmm, burgers. Love me some burgers. With due respect to Superboys (gotta get there) I'm a south end guy.

VJ's is pretty good, but only hit it from work occasionally as I'm downtown. It's a toss up between going there and the White Star Diner which is a little closer. Really like the White Star as I discovered it when it was on Albert in a tiny little place but now they are on Kennedy in a much more diner sized place. Excellent milkshakes at White Star.

Dairi-Wip - have been going here for years, including one inauspicious night where I walked there from a bar up the road to sober up a bit.

Johnny's Marion - this one's pretty new to me, but a buddy swears by it and turns out it is very good. Basically right across from Dairi-Wip.

Red Top - I still like Red Top and we go there once a month probably. I don't mind the burger size/bun ratio but I do agree with the general comments on here. I get a platter with fries and cole slaw and I don't need more burger so I'm happy. Service, like anywhere, can at times be sketchy lately but that's been unusual for us. I got 40+ years going here so there's a huge nostalgia factor as well.

Georges on St. Mary's - I think the George that opened the one on St. Anne's across from the McDonald's (now Dad's restaurant I believe) is still in here occasionally. That one opened I believe around 1980 (St. Anne's) and I've been a fan ever since. So, so, so many nights in that one after the bar. That's when they did their best business. Burger, fries and gravy and playing video games while you waited for your order. So many quarters. George sold to Gary, a guy I went to high school with who eventually sold to the guy who now owns Dad's and he can't believe the guy closes at 10:00. Gary now works for True North btw. But now we hit the one on St. Mary's north of the mall. I think their burgers are quite good, but more often interested in the chili fries or fries with gravy. I wouldn't argue with folks saying you can get the same style of burger elsewhere that's better but it's still pretty good.

Dairy Delight - this one is on St. Anne's further south and it's really quite good as well. Nearly no space to sit but the burgers are very tasty. Not really the traditional Greek style IMO but still very enjoyable.

Roblin Grill - we found this one during burger week. Owned by a 1st Nations family I believe and we go here pretty often. It's way out near the perimeter and an easy miss if you don't know where to look (south side near the last traffic lights heading west but in a strip mall, to the east of the new vendor). I have to say the service is generally pretty slow but we don't mind as we expect it. The food is very fresh and very tasty. Not Greek style stuff but really worth a visit if you like your burgers.

Non-burger wise will vouch for Garwood Grill - very nearly a can't go wrong place for humble food. We stumbled into there after their summer closure and it was lined up. We'd been going for quite some time prior to that but little realized how popular it was with the locals. I'd been going there since my Keg days back in the 1980s.

Will also put in my vote for the Grove as being a good place to visit.

For Pizza also vote for the one inside Trans-Canada Brewing. Very good in there. Nothing like going in and ordering a pizza and then having a pint of Arrow while you wait. Oh sure you could call in the order but why bother?

Tony's Pizza on Pembina is an old standby as well. The pizza is still pretty much the same as the first time I had it in 1978 when it used to be tucked in at the end of Garry's billiards and bowling lanes (remember when it seemed like everyone smoked in the bowling alley and pool hall?). They're still in the same block even though Garry's is now long gone. Gotta love the dough ball holding up the box lid. Mine!

There's a pizza/pasta place in south St. Vital that does really good pizza too, but I can't remember the name right now. Helpful, yes?

Still looking for a good Cubano

Decided to go to Marion St Eatery today to try their Cubano. Darn tasty (and filling) sandwich. Nice balance of ham, pork and cheese, and I appreciated the light touch on the mustard. I had a Cubano at Bushwakker's that was overpowered by the condiment. Also, coulda used more pickles but I'm a pickle junkie. However, being between two slices of french bread, it will probably fall short of a Cubano autentico for not having the pressed, grilled crust of a Cuban bread loaf, cut lengthwise.

Diane’s is so hit and miss now. Been under different ownership for a while now. Diane is a silent partner now. Bit pricey though.

pizza Heaven is go to now.

actually for a healthy burger Stella’s has a great burger platter! Not mention countless Great breakfast choices as well.

For pizza, Agostino’s has a cheap lunch deal and solid pizza.

$5 taxes in, gets you 2 pieces of za and a drink. Not my top pizza joint, but it is up there, and at that price you cant go wrong.

Gondola, Red Ember, Little Pizza Heaven are all solid as well.

Nuburger has some good “healthy” burgers. The black bean burger is nice but I’m partial to the falafel burger. It’s all about the condiments.

Maybe I missed it but surprised there hasn’t been more shout outs for Mrs Mike’s on Tache. Pretty tasty and good milkshakes.

Best Ice Cream?

Honestly, I think I’ve tried them all and Dairy Queen is tops imo. The new Syrian place on Osbourne, Chaeban, is really good too though, much more unique. Dutch Maid in Osbourne used to be my go to back in the day.
I have a long love affair with Ice Cream, dating back to my days as a Dickie Dee driver. Nothing more fun than heading to Assiniboine Park to snipe sales and having the park police chase you away over the foot bridge to Portage Ave, good times.
