OT: Restaurant thread

The Grove has some tasty vittles

The Grove may easily have the best price points in the city. Totally affordable, staff that have been with the place since Tubbys'/Charlie O's closed their doors and one of the few places in Winnipeg where beer can be ordered from a cask rather than a keg.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Cask Ale

Also easily the best soup in Winnipeg which changes every day. Broths, Bisques, Stews, Hot & Sours of different origin, even Pho! Always incredible with most accompanied with a nice slice of toasted marble rye.

Owners were once part of the Bar Italia management team, which has one of the nicer commercial grade espresso machines (Bar I makes good coffee) and the Grove purchased the same machine so they make a fine latte as well!

Is there any Croatian/Serbian/Yugoslav style restaurant I'm not aware of? I ate a place run by Serbian/Croatians in Burnaby and almost died from happiness.

That appears to be one of the cuisines we are lacking. There used to be one near U of M called Quattro Stagioni but it's gone. We're also in need of a Moroccan restaurant (wish we had something like Sultan's Tent in Calgary) and I still weep at the closure of Gasthaus Gutenberger. Best. Buffet. Ever. :(

For those who are visiting Vancouver and area, Burnaby has this place: Tenen Restaurant - Home

It's amazing.

Sadly no. There’s a Georgian restaurant on Corydon but somehow no Croation/Serb restaurants.
Best bet is Folklorama .

Was that place in Burnaby called Tenen? I was out there for work a couple months back and went there. Very good.

I've been meaning to mention Olympia. It's a long way from where we live but the wife likes to hit Shelmerdine's so when we're out that end of town, we'll pop in to Olympia for lunch. Good folk, good food, and you won't leave hungry.

Being a Westwood boy, I also developed a love for D-Jay's rib dinner. Many years ago, Marion Warhaft trashed the place in her review. I think she described the ribs as "gloppy" and the stuffed baked potatoes as "gummy". Maybe objectively she had a point, but there's something to be said for nostalgia. When you grow up with something, you're going to love it and **** the haters. Found out years later that the founder (Dennis "DJ" Johnson now deceased, his son took it over) was a relative of my best friend who passed away a little over a year ago.

DJays ribs are fantastic. Their seafood chowder is the best soup in the city.

Ya tenen. I had the Karadjordjeva Schnitzel.

Easy for you to... type. While it's not the Balkan cuisine you're looking for, Bistro Dansk is a little haven of Euro awesomeness with both Danish and Czech dishes.
Our Menu

We should go there more often, might encourage us to try some different things on the menu. But pretty much every time we're there, it's schnitzel for the wife and Veprova for me. And the sweet and sour cabbage. And the hazelnut pie.

Bar I has long had the best lattes in the city, way back to when they were nothing but a stand up coffee bar and place for old Italian guys to play cards, in a back private room.

I remember the first time I was in Rome, ordered a latte from this little coffee bar and said to myself “this reminds me of Bar I’s latte”.

It’s hard to break away from things you know are good and you like, isn’t it? I like a lot of restaurants but I can be a creature of habit in what I order.

I agree with @AlphaLackey that the Super cheese Nip with extra Sals sauce is an underrated burger. I also have an affinity for the triple decker, simple but delicious.

White Star makes a mean burger and an even better milkshake.

Pho Hoang my go-to place for Pho. Good ramen at Cho-Ichi on Pembina.

Overall my favourite restaurant probably got to go with Peasant Cookery...had a single piece of tortiere there that was bigger than most whole pies...

I’m not sure that I can have a favourite restaurant after Sonya’s on Henderson closed down. Best burgers I’ve ever had.
I’m so mad that I never asked the owner for the recipe even when I knew he was probably closing.
