OT: Restaurant thread

There is Max's near Polo Park
There is now Seafood City though its all the way up in Garden City Area

Jollibee is good for their fried chicken
I need to get to Jollibee soon
Fried Chicken is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Mama’s Noodle House on McPhillips has some nice dishes too and super reasonable

Red Eye Diner on North Main, Super Boy's.
The Grove, then walk over to Lilac Bakery.
Seafood City has great BBQ, further down Leila in the strip mall is Mama Nors'. Not a sit down restaurant, great lumpia and pancit.
I miss Pete's Place...:(

Its all dark meat which is kind of odd. If you like heat get their spicy chicken. It will knock your socks off.

My wife is Filipina and really likes Jenmuel's on Euclid for lechon(famous Filipino roasted pork). She also likes Mama Nors Kitchen on Leila. Noodle Street in Seafood City has some great noodle/soup dishes.

Jollibee!!

Which places do you recommend? The only other place I’ve been is Juvian’s. TBH, considering how big our Filipino community is, I’ve always thought the Filipino restaurant scene was rather unknown. I’ve always been curious about their cuisine but it seems to get buried in the vast selection of Vietnamese and Thai restaurants. Lately the Korean scene has made considerably more noise.
I obviously just don’t know where to go.

For breakfast, my go to place used to be Juvians back in the day but now I usually go to Papanga and Myrna’s. Papanga is a Filipino Winnipeg institution from back in the day ( by back in the day, I mean the late 80’s, the entire 90’s, early 2000’s ) if you ask any Filipino adult who was born in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s they had their birthday party, debut and even their wedding reception there. It used to be called Casa Bueno for us OG’s but now it’s a place for breakfast, lunch and the occasionally birthday’s.

Although Seafood City is the rage now there ( it’s pretty much everywhere in California ), our local spots for grocery’s was a place called Bueno Brothers Supermarket ( which is now closed ) but they had some tasty Turon ( deep fried plantain wrapped in wonton wrapper )...

In terms of bakery, Jejomar, Marcel’s, Jimel bakery just to name a few.

When I go back my old spots are now closed or bought out by another restaurant, but you can still find great Filipino stuff.

I have been back to Winnipeg the last two summers and something you might not realize is how affordable eating out is. The city has a great range of killer places to eat but unlike Vancouver you can actually afford to eat at them. Lots of amazing places to eat but you need a second and third mortgage to go.
Plus you cant get anything like that greek burger in the lower mainland. Georges, Dairy Whip, Juniors, nothing that good here.

We used to go regularly for the buffet at the Aristocrat when they were on Isabel, even if the cleanliness of the place was suspect. The men's washroom was pretty gross. Did not ever want to have a sit-down in there. They had some good tasty stews that I never knew the name of, pancit, lumpia and of course those decadent, fatty skewers of grilled pork. Mmmmm.

Never tried them once they moved to a take-out place in Tyndall Park.

Aristocrat was another place I went too, my dad was a regular there and all the OG’s go there to eat, drink coffee and have ‘meetings’ there. They weren’t the same once they won the lottery but it was still a jam there sometimes.

Recently went to the Peasant Cookery in the exchange. Nice place to enjoy some locally sourced dishes with Manitoba flare. Plus if youre into raw oysters like myself, Wednesdays are all you can eat buck a shuck. Yummy!

Please check out “The Tallest Poppy’” in the Front of the Sherbrook Inn.

I remember going there when they were on main and I worked in the area. Great place.
I'm waiting for that guy to open up his montreal style bagel place to see if it's any good. Had great bagels in montreal and ottawa and have been wanting that here for awhile.

Really?

You should be able to pick your choice
Breast
Wing
Thigh
Or leg

You've tried tapsilog?
Marinated fried beef, fried eggs and garlic fried rice for breaksfast.
Those are good bfast specially if you wake yp feeling hungry

I actually run a group of company different restaurants now. (The go to dining places in the #1 island in Asia :) )

I worked in food industry back in high school in Polo Park. My first job was a dishwasher in Brionis (italian food) if anybody remember that in early 90s.
The best sales we had was when Jets played in the old Winnipeg arena. Crazy line ups.

Polo Park / St. James with, Jets 1.0 vs. After they left was totally different area.

Just an o.t. question

Since you seem to fit that age.

You familiar with the street slammers?
They dance in basically every filipino parties in 90s and early200s

Hmm not really that I recall.
I had an older sister who rebelled at that time (which teen didn’t) but she had her crew back at Daniel Mac. She probably knows more about them than I do...I may have seen them but didn’t recognize their names.

Damn, that sounds like a good breakfast when I wake up feeling hungover.

And since this is the restaurant thread, I'll put in a plug for Stella's Mexican breakfast with chorizo and a healthy sprinkling of the Valentina salsa picante. Good any time of day.

Another greek burger place I like is The Burger Place on Portage & Rutland. Though my Greek barber tells me it isn’t as good as it used to be.
