Brisson Confirms that Ep40 Dealt with Injury which Prevented Him from Off Season Training

Well, at least after that interivew, he seems to be putting the money where his mouth is.
3 goals in last 4 games...
17 games left, 16 goals needed to hit 30. If he can pot 30, he's back. If not, I don't care if finishes with a 100 assists, he needs to keep shooting

right ?

Ya, he’s still not skating great and moving his feet like he needs to succeed.

It is curious that like his best stretch of four games or so comes right after he makes a humble declaration that he needs to be better. Kind of hard to ignore that as a data point either way, even if we all recognize he still has a long way to go.

I think confidence for sure crept in. While I didn’t expect him to score in this type of bunch, I knew once the damn broke he would score more.

This is the Petey we saw when miller was out. Where you can tell there is still lingering effects from before (imo from bad offseason). I think it’s the best we will see this year, and hopefully next year he will have his skating back.

That’s also a really good sign that this isn’t full Petey.

I’m more inclined to believe he’s still injured or has permanent effects from his injury than his play being poor from an off season that was six months ago.

That’s fair… I just think whenever he gets close, he has been hurt again, and I go back to when miller was out, and he looked good, then gets hurt for a few weeks… comes back and was terrible since.

Satiar Shaw said during the intermission that his NHL Edge numbers basically have returned to normal over the last twenty years. Can anyone verify?

It’s not exactly 20 games, but the Canucks Army article was after 49 games and he had 0 22+ mph bursts, 55 20-22 mph, and 346 18-20 mph.

In 12 games since then he’s had 1 22+, 8 20-22, and 91 18-20 mph. So over that period his pace has picked up in the 18-20 mph range but he’s still not hitting the higher numbers the way he used to.

I don't know if he's "back" but he's certainly trying to make plays that he wouldn't have earlier in the season. You wonder if we'll ever see the cockiness that seemed to drive his game when he was younger. Maybe he'll refine his skills into a more mature game and be the better player for it.

It's interesting to see him throw his body around a bit - he's not looking for big hits but using it to create separation from the puck along the boards.

Posted on Canucks IG earlier today, have a look at his left knee. Looks a bit like some kind of cyst. Anyone know what that could be a symptom of?

@PuckMunchkin if I recall correctly, you work with athletes? Any ideas?

I actually hate his hits.

Always goes in with his stick at hip level.

His best attribute as a forechecker is his ability to deflect/steal pucks. Take a line for body contact but keep your stick in position to steal the puck. Now he’s just a guy who throws weak hits and let’s every puck go past him.

We never win possession on the dumps when he’s F1.

If I didnt know he had knee issues I would say its a lipoma, a benignin tumor made of fat tissue.

Could be a meniscal cyst that can form when there is a tear within the meniscus cartilage... but it looks a bit high for that.

Maybe the lighting makes it look more dramatic than it is and its nothing.

Forget the lump & look at that ankle!!!!!!!

Not sure if it’s the lighting or photo shop but is he dealing with a staph infection ???

Looks like his right knee has something smaller too.

Could all just be bumps and bruises of a hard season too.

They look like weak hits but if you actually notice he drives his elbow in the rib cage area last minute when he goes for some of those hits. It’s a old timer technique and he pulls it’s off rather nice

I'm not an NHL coach so I'm not going the question why they would change the play style of someone who just "succeeded" in the NHL with a 102 pt season Selke level season. What I do question is the human aspect of all this. You're asking the guy to make wholesale changes to the way he plays, while he is injured, and while being bullied, and then you still go out into the media and talk smack about him all season without taking any of it into consideration?

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/tocchet-canucks-change-pettersson-playing-style

In an interview with Mike Halford and Jason Brough on Sportsnet 650, head coach Rick Tocchet said the Canucks are changing Pettersson’s playing style. What may have worked for the Swedish centre in the 2022-23 season when he scored 102 points is not necessarily what’s succeeding in today’s game.

“I know people joke about it, I say it all the time… if you want to score goals or you want to be a dominant player, you’ve got to move your feet,” said Tocchet.

“You’ve got to get to those areas, you’ve got to be deceptive, you’ve got to play north hockey. Regroup hockey, taking the puck back, won’t win in the NHL.”

If I wanted to know how to take penalties, I would defer to Toccs' wisdom

If I wanted to know how to create offence while being one of the best defenders in the NHL, I would defer to Petey circa '22-'23

Who am I kidding, the only penalty I would ever get the chance to take would be a misconduct for chirping the stripes

Visually, that tracks. He's converting more, showing more burst, but not enough top/mid level speed as before.

This is him. Producing will keep the critics away, but until he resolves his speed/injury in the offseason, he will not be 'back'.

I would be more on board with Tocchet changing Pettersson's game if I was convinced that it was a winning play style. The Canucks are 27th in the league in generating scoring chances over the past 2 seasons so the issues extend beyond Pettersson.

Im just guessing;

But this would seem like his mental state getting better, while his physical limitations are still very obviously there.

It's a good indicator of how confident he is and not much else. Everyone just skates harder the more they believe in themselves. It's natural.

I want to see him *play* faster. What do you mean Rev? Good Q, forum. It means not double-clutching on pucks, it means knowing where the open guy is before the other team does, it means knowing exactly where you're going to put the puck before you even have it. I've seen him do this habitually, but when he lacks confidence it vanishes in a puff of smoke.

It's f***ing in there. But he's constantly f***ed up. I don't know why, if it's the routine hardness Miller put on him or what. But since JT chose to leave by his own route, which seems to be by grating on the room, Elias his picked up his own JT streak.

Which is fantastic. It shows he's a fighter and not a flighter. But EP40 has neither the mind nor the body to play that way in a sustainable manner. Can he? Oh yeah. Should he? That's another question, entirely. It's a very Peter Forsberg game. And I loved Forsberg, he killed the Canucks like they murdered his dog as a child extrajudicially. But you look at the stockiness of Peter and the lankiness of Petey and wonder how sustainable that way is.

He should lean into another one of the comparisons laid out for him. Not Gretzky, that's a braindead comparison and I hated it with a certain fondness from the get-go. Datsyuk is where it's at. Think harder, play smarter.
