OT: Restaurant thread

Santa Ana and Calabria are easily my 2 favorite pizza places. Outstanding pizza.

Olympia diner in St James is great. (Greek)

I've been meaning to mention Olympia. It's a long way from where we live but the wife likes to hit Shelmerdine's so when we're out that end of town, we'll pop in to Olympia for lunch. Good folk, good food, and you won't leave hungry.

Being a Westwood boy, I also developed a love for D-Jay's rib dinner. Many years ago, Marion Warhaft trashed the place in her review. I think she described the ribs as "gloppy" and the stuffed baked potatoes as "gummy". Maybe objectively she had a point, but there's something to be said for nostalgia. When you grow up with something, you're going to love it and f*** the haters. Found out years later that the founder (Dennis "DJ" Johnson now deceased, his son took it over) was a relative of my best friend who passed away a little over a year ago.

SMITH at Inn at the Forks is one of my favourites that I didn’t see listed here.

the buttermilk fried chicken is dynamite and the sausage platter is also amazing.

I also had my annual VJs stop last week and wish I could talk myself into eating it more often

Unless I missed it, I didn't see anybody mention Johnny's Marion Restaurant (almost directly across frim the Dari Whip, on Marion, natch!). It's your basic no-frills, Mom & Pop, meat & potatoes type of place. Nothing fancy, but good eats all around. Big hearty breakfasts (best damn breakfasts in the 'Peg, IMO. Those hearty breakfasts have wiped out many a hangover... errr... ummm... so I've been told! :sarcasm: ). And again, it's definitely not fancy. The decor is, shall we say, "dated" (hey, you're there to eat the food, not the furniture!) and they're so old school, they don't take debit or credit cards, so you gotta bring cash (I know, it's a pain in the a** re: no debit/credit. Hey, it is what it is). But great staff, good coffee and those brekkys will have you loosening your belt a notch or two! Just my $0.02 worth.

Thank y'all for reminding me why I like gained 100# since I came to this town. Well, middle age, a sedentary lifetime and chronic alcohol abuse might have done it but ANYWAYS, damn do we have restaurants a-plenty' in this town.

Agree with the Red Top, especially the dismal bun/burger ratio. I get the spaghetti with chili sauce and meat patties when I'm there, or the hamburger and eggs breakfast.

Surprisingly, no love for Salisbury House here? For the price point, the food is as good as can be expected.

Dairy Wip for sure, we've loved it in our family for decades. And yes, that portrait of JFK and RFK is still up there. They may have begrudgingly gotten with the times with Skip the Dishes and offering poutine along with chili and fries, but that painting is still up there.

Gondola Pizza is best pizza.

Copper Kitchen on Dakota by St. Vital has a "12 samosas for $10" deal and you might think they'd be appetizer sized but oh no, they're quite literally the size of softballs. Like, damn.

Still looking for a good Cubano, still looking for a restaurant that specializes in Indigineous cuisine, which seems a baffling state of affairs considering Winnipeg's demographics.

Feast Cafe Bistro | Modern Dishes Rooted in First Nation Foods
I have never been but a friend said it was pretty good.

I’ll be in town at the end of the month. Traditional places I would hit:

Pancake House - giant apple pancake is amazing
Homers - love greek food; pastichio, avgolemeno soup
Sumhai - #35 and #64 were amazing... though good thing I read this thread to see where the restaurant that the old owner went to
VJ’s - my fav burger joint

Interesting story about Homer's. We hired them to provide the food for our wedding. Huge trays of all the Greek classics: souvlaki, moussaka, pastitsio, lemon potatoes, baklava, etc etc. People gorged themselves and we still had a freezer full of leftovers. We sent them a thank you card for the wonderful feast they provided.

Flash forward a bit in time, and we pop into the restaurant for an evening out. Pinned to the bulletin board behind the front desk was our thank you card. When the hostess realized it was us, she was happy to tell us that we were the reason they were now in the catering business. They had never catered before our wedding, and it got them to realize there was a big business opportunity for them. Our card remained pinned to that board for many years.

Brazen Hall, porchetta Cubano.

You’re welcome.

Went here last week, loved it. The pickled turnips they put in their Shawarmas are the best!

They must be better than the ones Shawarma Khan uses, cause those things do nothing for me. I'm not so picky as to ask them to leave them out but they just don't seem to have much flavour or tanginess.

They are. They are similar to ones you can buy in the international foods section at Superstore, really good.

Coming home July for a Thursday-Sunday stretch for a Bomber game, a show at Rainbow Stage and some good Winnipeg eats. Never been to VJ's, gonna check it out. Last time I came home I got some take out Ukrainian food from Kozak, anywhere else I should be looking for?

Haven’t seen anyone mention Bangkok Thai yet. Thida Thai has bigger portions, but I think Bangkok Thai is a bit better.

Yup, head over to Fortune Cooking on St James instead of Sumhay. His family was running it for awhile when he left and started Fortune Cooking and it was still the same but now its been sold off and its a completely different menu that sucks. Fortune Cooking literally has the same menu+taste as the old Sumhay. Even the menu numbers are still the same lol.

Love Vietnamese food, Phuong Nam and Vi Ann are my favorites. Phuong Nam has an amazing wonton soup, the broth is insane. Vi Ann has an awesome chow mein, of course both have amazing pho soups.

Clementines for breakfast, go early as it always lines up.

Sgt. Street Tacos is the best mexican in the city. Their steak tacos are amazing.

Good Earth, solid Chinese buffet every day, cheap and very good.

Salisbury House is so expensive and their food is overrated .
I only buy their chocolate cake doughnuts. So good!

I find one of the the best pizzas in the city is a place called Frank's Pizza.
