RD Landon Dupont - Everett Silvertips, WHL (2027 Draft)

By the time he gets drafted he will be the most hyped defenseman in the history of the NHL draft.

I feel he’s good enough to get ES without having to threaten to leave for the states, he isn’t some borderline case like Misa or Veleno, I think he’s clearly approaching McDavid/Bédard/Tavares levels of ES type players

It might just come down to him preferring the CHL or USHL/NCAA route.

Who wouldn't want to go the Steel and their pro-level development program.

he'd never see college though so why play at a lower level for 3 years, plus unless you play 2 or more college years why bother. Top end talent is much better off going the chl route unless theyre undersized

Follow in Makar’s footsteps since it worked for him?

Why wouldn't he go through college? Tons of kids have sped up their schooling and got in early like Fantilli, Johnson, Wood and Celebrini.

Or he could play AJHL and go the Makar route.

Makar was undersized and more of a late bloomer so needed the extra years. Outside of Celebrini most of the hyped western players at a young age who went college haven't really developed well and while I think he'll be a star we haven't seen Celebrini in pros, plus he wasn't actually playing minor hockey in Canada past few years. The Josts, Fabbro, Johnson, JBD, Newhook, etc haven't tracked well compared to expectations. Makar is really the outlier

Toews, Kariya, and others have turned out just as well going to college.

The difference now is the Steel are a legitimate factory for NHL talent, just like Shattuck's is for earlier aged prospects.

And hockey is not the only reason, college culture and an education are appealing.

Difference is Dupont is MILES ahead of Makar at the same age.

Makar in his 14-year-old season: 20 points (4-16-20) in 28 games at the U15 level.

Dupont in his 14-year-old season: 33 points (13-20-33) in 16 games at the U18 level.

Makar is the best defenceman in the NHL now, yes, but comparing them at 14 shows that Dupont is clearly better.

It would be terrible for the CHL if DuPont goes the NCAA route. Hopefully that doesn't happen.
Me personal opinion is I don’t see much benefit for him flung that route. He’ll only likely play 1 year in NCAA and I think someone of his talent needs to be playing Junior whether it’s USHL or W as quickly as possible. Does anyone here know the rules around 15 year olds in the USHL better than me?

There's no exceptional status. He can play 2025-26 season in the USHL, but not 2024-25.

Agreed, but the WHL has been notoriously difficult to grant ES. Savoie, at the time was seen as a VERY good option to receive it. He applied, had amazing numbers against players many years older but still got denied. (Looking back on it, it was a good decision)

A lot of people also forget that both Brayden Yager and Riley Heidt applied and got denied ES the same year Bedard applied. At the time all 3 were seen as super talents out of the west, and all three have been prolific scorers in the WHL. But I think the WHL want to keep it to where only kids like Bedard get it. No disrespect to Yager or Heidt, but they’re not Bedard. So because of it, Dupont may not be granted it if Hockey Canada comes to the conclusion that he isn’t a generational star like Bedard.

Looking back on it, it’s a good thing none of those 3 got granted ES. It’s supposed to be for the best of the best guys that leave the league as soon as they get drafted, Bedard is that. Is Dupont on that level? I don’t think so.

He sets the bar very high. I have him #1 on my 2027 short list.

Typically the type of player who deserves ES status.

There isn't much suspense as to who will be No. 1 in the 2024 WHL Draft.

The belief is that Savoie said he wouldn't report to Prince George if they won the draft lottery, and that's why he didn't receive exceptional status. Then PG didn't end up winning the lottery anyway, so Savoie made his bed and had to sleep in it.

I rather believe in the hypothesis that he was not dominant enough. His stats weren't impressive enough.

Hope to see him get ES to be honest, very impressive numbers at the U18 level as a guy who turns 15 this may.

Tournament MVP and Top Defenseman as the second youngest player that the event. The youngest was his teammate Brock England, although he was a call-up for this team and isn't a permanent roster player like DuPont.

I couldn't figure out if he's the youngest to ever take home tournament MVP, going back to 1978 and trying to find ages for all those guys is a bit tough, but I wouldn't be surpised if he was the youngest MVP or at least in the top 3-5 youngest.
