No. NHL scouts and GM didn't think those guys will be better against men in 2 to 5 years. They haven't opined on whether they will be better against juniors in a month.
Yakemchuk had no issues playing against grown men throughout the entirety of NHL preseason. This is just a good example of GMs being too cute. You don’t leave off top 10 drafted players, it’s nonsensical.

It's a bizarre decision to not only exclude him from that initial group, but also going with Parekh as the first sub today. I like Parekh as a prospect and I think his game is well suited to junior, but Yak would be a dominant force with a better supporting cast. That much was clear in the Sens' pre-season where he regularly looked levels above NHL competition.

I think it's more a case of the selection team just doesn't like him. At this point I don't think it's based on ability.

I bet if Staios never complained that Yak would’ve been the first replacement.

What clowns. No dissent allowed or otherwise you’re punished.

How has Yakemchuk regressed in points per game this year? You'd think he'd have popped off significantly, considering Kindel has exploded.

Not just points are down, so is effort. He's not even overly physical anymore. He's bored and lost interest. You often see that with elite prospects who dominated at will in major juniors. If they're still sent back after almost making the NHL team they tend to lose interest in junior hockey, shift their focus towards turning pro next summer. Which is fine I guess.

Yakemchuk still has his good nights but most games it's kinda clear he doesn't care. He's gonna leave it all out there come playoff time but he'll probably continue to coast until then more often than not.

Can't really blame him. Calgary was always gonna make the playoffs and he's clearly looking at the bigger picture. He was fantastic for the Sens during preseason and I think they strongly considered giving him a look for a few regular season games.

These are kids. He's not the first and won't be the last to half ass a junior season after outplaying the league the season before. Ideally those kids should be allowed to play AHL but it is what it is.

I mean but half assing it is part of why he probably wouldn’t have done well in the AHL this year. You can’t just decide to turn it on in pros as a teenager unless you’re a McDavid type. You’ll get spit out quickly.

Nah. It's been done before. Look at Brennan Othmann for example. In 22/23 his OHL regular season scoring output was 30 points down compared to 21/22 and he was clearly half assing it. He did, however, follow it up with a 49 points AHL rookie season suggesting that he would have been AHL ready the season before.

Yeah. And in this case, Yakemchuk has been mighty strong during NHL preseason. While NHL preseason can't be compared to NHL regular season he still looked amazing playing big minutes vs men. I'm not worried about Yakemchuk one bit.

He wasn’t just good for a prospect, he was one of Ottawa’s best players for what has to be acknowledged was a small sample of games.

There was serious discussion of keeping him up due to his performance.

Yeah sorry but half assing it and not caring about your performance is a massive red flag for a prospect, and excusing it because he had a few great pre-season games is absurd.

Considering his performance at the combine, have to wonder if he also doesn't give a crap about improving his game off the ice.

Doesn't bode well for his future prospects.

I'll believe it when I see it with the big team.

Obviously if he is half-assing it, that's not a positive thing. It's never a positive when a guy shows regression in his league. Far from a death sentence, though, and the lowering of his ceiling that some seem eager to do is extremely premature.

It will be interesting to see how he looks in the playoffs and what his trajectory is next year.

If he's not taking his development seriously at lower levels he's not going to be with the big team for awhile.

The Sens will assess their options with Yakemchuk based on how he looks during playoffs and, most importantly, during camp next summer. That's what's Yakemchuk is focused on. Just because he's half assing regular season games of a league he already outplayed that doesn't equal him not taking development seriously. You don't know how hard he's working in practice or off ice. Those are the keys right now, not regular season games of a junior team that was always gonna qualify for playoffs.

True but we'll also what happens in the playoffs.

If he doesn't turn it on, then I'll really start to worry.
