Prolly b+, and I’m no Treliving fan.
Apparently got turned down going all in on Rantanen. At least he tried.
So glad no Schenn.
Carlo is a clear upgrade, whether they play him with Rielly or they play Tanev with Rielly and McCabe and Carlo.
And OEL down to third pairing and Benoit in the press box.
Laughton in theory a small upgrade so no Domi at centre and gives us lots of wingers to play with on third and fourth lines. Patches now on LTIR.
Now they have to show up and play, hopefully win the division.

What do you mean by that ?

Jumping in since I feel the same.

Our window due to age and contracts is about 3 years. Then everything come to a halt and Matthews may go, Dcore still signed and very old etc.

Tre knows it's a 3 year window and he went that route. If the core flops, Marner is out. Have to pursue McDavid next year or other ways

f***ing work gets in teh way. Just coming home to see all this. Leafs out 2 1st round picks + minten out again betting on the forawrds that shit the bed in the playoffs

Would have been much more prudent to stay put this season and see if these guys can take a step forward with a new coach and if not you know what you got and then create a new plan with it

Futures have been sold for forwards that haven't shown any playoff pedigree is something I am not cool with.

The huge problem that leafs have had for a long while i.e. depth scoring ofcourse not addressed either. Defense was never a major issue for the Leafs. It was always putting the puck in opposition's net.

I don't even know what to say anymore....
On paper, this group of five forwards should provide the depth scoring to slaughter other teams third lines:

Robertson - McMann - Domi - Laughton - Pacioretty

Or they could spread the wealth through 3 lines. Domi has shown to work well with Matthews, so that should absolutely be tried again.

Knies - Matthews - Domi
McMann - Tavares - Marner
Robertson - Laughton - Nylander
Lorentz - Kampf - Jarnkrok

I said: "kiss me, you're beautiful -
These are truly the last days"
You grabbed my hand and we fell into it
Like a daydream, or a fever

Definitely worth a shot. I would also consider:

McMann - Laughton - Marner

Give that line the shutdown, defensive minutes.

This is the best forward group imo

Stacked offense

stacked d core

good goaltending finally

good coach

They have grit and size. Maybe not more than Florida, but this team aint getting bullied. We're too big and strong.

If we stay healthy, I don't see why this team can't compete. We are clearly much better despite everyones freaking trauma

Brad gets A+ from me.
I gave an A only because Carlo trade is best one of trade deadline anywhere in league .. Laughton trade is OK but an overpay .. A+ deal and a B deal but overall A-
They have Laughton at $1.5mx2. That is less money than Jarnkrok and Kampf and it was for a protected 27 first and Grebenkin.

He was all in on Rantanen and only made his two trades after the Canes decided to move him to Dallas because they were afraid to meet Rantanen and the Leafs in the playoffs.

That 3rd line should be better than other 3rd lines. Without Nylander, they might be able to keep up IMO.

Now let's see if Berube is willing to split up Tom and Jerry.

He didn’t trade them for rentals
That's not the credo.

This is it:

1. Oxygen, water, food, shelter, and social interactions far down the list of important necessities. Keeping draft picks, keeping prospects, and acquiring more draft picks is the highest level of elite HF GM Utopia.

2. If your team seems to be good (not President's Trophy Elite), then you need to start tanking for a chance at a lottery pick. Playing games in the playoffs is not worth the chance to have a blissful NHL entry draft day. "Cup or Die" is the phrase people use.

I would give him a B+. Needed a Dman and he got a good one. Needed a 3C who plays with a little grit and he got one. No rentals, good retention. Just needed a forward that can score. That’s been our weakness in the playoffs. I guess it’s up to our core to earn their hefty salaries.
You are a tough grader. What did he have to do to get an A+? He almost pried Rantanen out of Carolina and had these two deals worked out when the Canes decided to move him to Dallas.

Brad has passed all the tests. Time for the 3 amigos to pass their playoff final exams.

I gave him a D

Every year this team gets owned by physical hockey.
No time no space . The other team finishing all their checks.

Our forward group is the softest in the league.
Who do we have to send out after the tkachuk
Bennett or Marchandafter they cheap shot our core 4.

Knies or Lorentz will answer the bell but the rest
Are too soft.
AJ Greer
Gadjovich
Bennett
Tkachuk
Marchand

Vs

Reaves (will 100% play against Florida)
Lorentz
Domi
Laughton
Knies
McMann
Benoit/Myers
McCabe

The idea that our forwards are soft is an old narrative. Our LW in particular is quite heavy, and C with Matthews, Tavares. Laughton and Kampf are good sized. It's really just Mitch, and Robertson, if he's in the line up, who are small.

“A tough grader”? That’s what I hear from students all the time lol. Seriously, Treliving had a great TDL filling holes that we had, I like both players. I suppose an A could have been granted if he somehow could have added a 2nd line winger who could score. Easier said than done though.

If the defense wasn't good enough before Carlo it still isn't good enough now.

You worry about next year in the offseason. But if they acquired Rantanen and planned on keeping him I wouldn't be too worried about re-signing Marner. These trades look like desperation moves made once they saw what Florida and Tampa were doing.

If the Leafs don't get past either of those teams again both Shanahan and Treliving should be shown the door.
Shanny is on the bubble, not Brad. Brad was dealt a bad hand when he walked into the position and has improved the team despite it. Also, the offseason acquisitions have been stellar, that is where he does his best work. He found a goalie that before injury might have been in line for the Vezina, they have a tandem that are supportive teammates and are now a strength for the team. He signed Tanev, who along with McCabe, make this D far better. Carlo now back there has this defense a legit playoff D. Brad didnt sign the cores contracts that handcuffed the team (my primary criticism of Dubas).

Lets hope the Leafs succeed, if not, Brad has to walk from the big contracts and explore the UFAs. At worst, no full NMC to anyone not named Dave Keon.

The fact he got both Laughton and Carlo with retention is pretty darn good, particularly since neither are pure rentals and have some term on their deals. Addressed the two biggest areas of need.

My only real gripe is that we didn't add much scoring, and that always seems to bite us in the playoffs. But frankly, we only go as far as the star players take us. They earn the big bucks and they need to show us why.

B+

A

1) Found two good players that immediately fill roster holes
2) Both players have some term, not pure rentals
3) Held onto Cowan
4) Retention on both players, will be huge going forward with cap increase

You gotta give to get, yeah we lost two 1sts. Those picks are 5-6 years away from being NHLers, we are in win now mode. Laughton is pretty much what Minten's peak is projected to be.

Carlo has the injury concerns, but he's a stud on the back end.

His patience paid off. Laughton wasn't his first pick but he will wear his heart on his sleeve. I saw an interview where Torts spoke very highly of him and called him a friend, even after he gets traded (which they all knew was happening) For a no BS guy like Torts to call a player a friend is a strong indication of Laughtons character. I expect bigger things for him in T.O
