idk, don't like what sandin is doing. if he's not interested he can leave. it sucks but whatever, he is in no position to be dictating terms. need to set an example with the RFAs

Majority of fans have been putting Sandin in the top 4 of our lineup for years now. They weren't interested in him earning anything. Now all of a sudden, we're annoyed he wants top 4 without earning it.

We've seem the same with Robertson. For 3 years a lot of fans have had him on the left of Matthews or Tavares. Also happened with Knies last year.

We can't now want them to earn it.

robertson still needs 3-4 years of seasoning in the marlies

It’s one thing when obvious future stars in Matthews/Marner/Nylander play hardball when negotiating their post ELC contracts. It still sucks when they sign above market value and for less term than comparable players, but at least it can be rationalized because they scored goals and points in their first three seasons at ridiculous rates and it was obvious they’d be stars.

Sandin is not in that category of player at all. And I like the guy a lot as a player and think he’s got great potential, but if he thinks what he’s shown up to now is enough to make the same demands as MNM he’s got another think coming. I’m in complete agreement with Dubas’ approach of calling his bluff. Go sign an offer sheet if you think a team out there is willing to give you $4 million.

Leafs can’t keep getting run over in RFA negotiations. Since the Big Three RFA deals have been pretty drama free. Of course it would take a Lewis Gross client to dredge up old wounds and anxieties again. It’s obvious he’s using the media too to drive up Sandin’s value and the drama around the situation. Trying to bait other teams to make an offer.

in the negotiations doobas should keep showing him the game winning goal in game 1 against montreal that was all his fault

'scust.

lol in hindsight campbell looks like a moron on that goal too

What a twat Jumbo Joe came off as in that documentary man, we would have been such a better team without him, had the agility and speed of a depressed elephant.

Wish we’d gone with Perry and Simmonds instead of Thornton and Simmonds. I’m pretty sure the decision was between Simmonds and Perry but we’d have been much better off if we went with the agitator and enforcer combo instead of the enforcer and past his prime skill guy in Thornton. Especially since Spezza already had the Thornton role.

Pretty much. Playing nice guy to your stars is one thing, but to 3rd pair young player who hasn't earned anything is quite another. Dubas needs to give his fair which he probably did, if Sandin doesn't want that well than Dubas should say ok sit on the sidlines and tell me when you want to sign.
Not that I expect Liljegren to come to Sandin, but both are best friends, so Liljegren should make a pitch to him and say "look just take this right now, and good chance in 2 years we will have big roles on this team". I fel like Gross might be giving bad advice to Sandin like he may have with Nylander.

Okay I guess that earlier quote was more directed at the media. This one he is more supportive of the player. Still though Kyle I think is surprised we are in this situation with Sandin

marleau too, a loser, was just out there preserving himself for his petty ironman streak.

lol surprised babcock didn't bench him just to f*** with him but instead overplayed him

All this talk of old boys just makes me think of how perfect Spezza was, I will always hate us for not delivering a cup for that man. Just a straight up class act, did it all right on and off the ice, I hope he comes back and coaches the Leafs in 10 years to a cup or something.

That would just be beautiful.

Must be because Babcock knew Marleau from the Olympic teams. Unlike Modano who is an American and Babcock had no previous rapport with him.

If reports are true, it sounds like more of a diva thing than a money or opportunity thing. Who is this kid calling shots like this with less than 100 games of experience and frankly not much to show for? What’s next, Roberson demands the captaincy?

Sandin is the youngest, smallest and one of the most unproven defensemen in the group on a blueline that needs to get bigger, harder to play against. Maybe it isn’t so bad we move on from this guy.

Wanting to play NHL minutes instead of the possibility of being in the press box is hardly being a diva

He signs for 1.4 and we don't play him for two years and he's possibly losing multiple millions.

I'd rather that then a ben Simmons kyrie situation if you follow the nba

I understand why people may not like it, but Sandin has every right to question his role on the team. If Sandin goes somewhere else and explodes, people will rightly question why Dubas decided to bury him behind Muzzin and Giordano. Just like with Dermott, if you don't give players opportunities to advance they aren't going to want to stick around

Or they signed Gio because they didn't see him take that next step?

The kid is a 2018 first round pick. Not having a spot cemented is pretty normal at his age. He’s not at the level where he can have a consultation with the team about play time and expectations in the board room any more than Jacob Bernard Docker going to the Sens and being concerned where he’s going to play. That’s determined on the ice where it’s earned.

This kid doesn’t get it.

He clearly stepped into the role of a good 3rd pairing defenseman, and now he's blocked from even playing in the NHL. It's not outright bad since Gio is still really good, but it is very questionable. Most teams would prioritize the home grown 22 year old over the 40 year old deadline acquisition. We'll see if it was worth alienating Sandin

A young third pairing dman doesn’t call shots on his job profile and piss and moan about the depth chart. He beats the third pair LHD for play time and proves himself indispensable and tries to work up to the second pair. This is just not how a career is honestly built.

This kid seems to have Mitch Marner negotiating tactics and a Dermott start to his career. Unique combination.
If he wants to be paid like Marner/Matthews and get 60-70 million he'd have to be paid out in rubles lol

2 years 1.75M is the max he is worth I'd say.

He's around lilijgren being a bit younger. Take a bridge, beat out muzzin and gio letting us move them with cifbdience knowing sandin is a quality 2LD and then hus next deak get 5.5-6M on a 6-8 year term deal

He and Liljegren have the same career stats, similar draft profile and need to earn more trust and build their careers. Yet this guy is running some quasi Kotkaniemi career pathway. Only difference is the Leafs pumped him up on the PP1 unit during the Montreal series and he probably let that temporary status go to his head.

I don't think he's pissing and moaning. If he was saying anything publicly, I'd agree with you. But just not wanting to sign with a team that doesn't seem to have an NHL spot for him is well within his rights.

I'm much more annoyed about how the Leafs have struggled to integrate young players into their lineup. That's what winning teams are supposed to do. Instead we're seeing the Leafs prioritize guys like Foligno and Thornton

The problem is the inmates run the asylum here in Toronto and there’s no normal career development track. Rookie prospects get thrown onto prime PP1 roles in the playoffs, hugely inflates their egos and playing for a high profile team makes everything think they’re a superstar.

Sandin’s career status is very normal for his age and having to prove himself is normal too. Yet it seems like he doesn’t want to put in the honest work to cement his role on the team.

A good (sheltered) 3rd pair D that can't string together a healthy half season playing 16 minutes a night. He's too small to play the game he tries to play on defense for 82 games of 18+ minutes, if he wants those he needs to put in the work at the gym. It would be suicidal to depend on him as a permanent fixture on D until he's able to play his way without missing games all the time.

Every LD we have is injury prone or hitting an age where maintenance days are a necessary reality, he'll he his chances but we need to be 4 deep on LD otherwise we're calling up AHLers again.
