I’m sick of agents and players strong arming our management. If Sandin wants more I’d try something like the following:

To NYI, Sandin and Holl
To TML, Mayfield +

I think NYI might be interested in seeing where a Dobson/Sandin pairing might go.
I think Mayfield could add to the Leafs need for some size on the backend. At 500k less than Holl, it offers some money for a Boosh type signing.

He has no case to make for getting the same money that Liljegren just got. He has every right to hold out for as much as he can. But how big can the gap really be?

Sandin was making about 900K on his last deal, and Liljegren just signed for 1.4 million. There's your absolute bottom and top for a contract. Anything too close to the bottom means the Leafs don't want him here, and anything too close to the top means Sandin doesn't want to be here.

Small, weak and slow. I question if he has the physical tools to ever become a solid top 4 defenseman.

He's awfully slow for an offensive defenseman, and he's not good defensively either.

They can literally ice a dcore until he signs...

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Giordano Liljegren

Leafs hold all the cards here.
it's true to some degree.

Rasmus could really handcuff us by signing an offer sheet though. Any contract he signs below 4.2AAV would only require a team to give up a 2nd round pick. If his number is 4AAV, it is a gross overpayment at this point in his career and the compensation does not meet the value of the player.

It would be really simple if I were Kyle. Sit down with Rasmus and his agent. Explain to him that if he doesn't sign for X amount, his rights will be dealt. If he elects to stay in Toronto, we move Muzz to make way for him in the lineup.

on one hand i'm getting tired of having drama even on what should be the easiest negotiations

on the other hand i can't blame him for worrying about getting jerked in and out of the lineup and maybe trying to force his way off the team

Shouldn’t we be putting a priority on getting our draft picks signed to good deals and in the lineup because of the salary structure?
Isn’t the point to move someone aging (like Muzzin) at higher dollar? Thats the pipeline? Unless our draft picks can’t handle the job.

...and in reality no one signs guys like Sandin to offersheets.

Offersheets are made up HFboard drama 99.9% of the time.

I don’t know why media and fans are stating that this guy is worth 3-4mil a year. Based on what exactly? What has he accomplished here? I’m genuinely curious, as it doesn’t compute for me.

Don't worry by the end of next week, Sandin will be so old and slow he'll never be good enough for the AHL.

Keefe is a great coach, unless we're in a different thread, so it's all the players fault.

Offer sheeting Rasmus Sandin to a 1 year 4.2AAV deal is incredibly beneficial for Rasmus and the team acquiring him. Look at Seattle for example, they have a lack of high end young talent, they can provide an instant opportunity for Rasmus to play significant role, and they possess their own 2nd round pick require to make that transaction possible.

It would be a no brainer for both Rasmus and Seattle.

If Rasmus is not married to staying in Toronto, an offersheet is 100% an option

Given the Leafs salary structure you don’t even have to go that high.
I don’t see why a team like Buffalo or Seattle wouldn’t offer Sandin a 3 x 2 year deal. For a 21 year old 1st rounder.
Will it happen, who knows but it’s not crazy. It’s not like offering Mich 7 million.

Speaking of Jake Muzzin its LA now the benefactor of playing the kids as a result of that trade that brought him to TO.

Traded • Jake Muzzin to Maple Leafs for • Carl Grundstrom (former Leaf pick - round 2 #57 overall 20160 & • Sean Durzi (former Leaf - round 2 #52 overall 2018) & 2019 first round pick (#22-Tobias Bjornfot) on 2019-01-28.

All 3 of the young players dealt 2 X former 2nd round picks and young Dman Bjornfot were all in LA's roster that qualified for the playoffs.

Now we're suggesting dealing away an aging injury prone vet like Muzzin so Leafs can start playing their own kids like Sandin and Liljegren, and perhaps even re-coup some lost future in the process.

He's worth 1.5/2.5 imo

My only previous point RE: offer sheet is you don't have to give up a lot to get a high potential dude on a decent contract. Offer sheeting him for 3 isn't the worst contract in the world for a guy that is going to play in your top 6

Wasn't he playing pretty well prior to the injury? Everything kinda blends in post covid so forgive me if I'm wrong about that

It's actually wild seeing people forget that Jake Muzzin is our #3D and played 22 minutes a night in the playoffs with outstanding results. As f***ing if we'd dump him because we want minutes for a 3rd pairing PP specialist.

Rielly-Gio-Sandin as a left side is an absolute house of cards and if either of the 39 or the 22 year old play anything other than perfect, we're back to having a joke of a defense. Rielly-Muzzin-Gio-Sandin is phsyical, deep, talented, and a legitimately strong blueline.

Sandin has 16 points in 51 games and is 22 years old. He's not getting offersheeted and he's not getting paid more than Liljegren just because he looked better a few years ago. He's welcome to steal a job and I hope he does, he's got IQ for days and that means upside, but we're not going to be jettisoning our #3D for him. And for real, the disrespect for Muzzin is utterly insane. I can't wait for him to make you all eat your words, he had a rough season but he's a warrior and he didn't forget how to play hockey. 22 minutes a night against Tampa, take Jake Muzzin to the bank.

Muzzy was hurt before camp even started .. he played through a knee injury all year .. like a lot a farmer boys he kept it quiet thinking he could play through it .. once he got rested for playoffs he played better again .. he will be fine this year and won't make same mistake twice .. big issue with Muzzy is when does father time catch up to him .. it is an answer no one ever knows til camp starts

Yea I’m thinking 1.5-2.0 max. This guy right now is a 6/7 D.

The preview we got of a diminished Muzzin this past season wasnt pretty, personally I'd move on from both Muzzin and Sandin. Move Muzzin while you can and move Sandin to get a better fit.

Find a younger/cheaper defensive and PK player to fill the spot.

father time never catches up to any of our players , it's either there injured or ill or something but it's never age or so i keep reading on HF

Kyper asking whether Sandin could be an OS target ?? Would Leafs match an OS of $2.5m or more ?? Probably not.
I wondered that same thing last week. Maybe all this talk about him not wanting to sign is a smoke screen to discourage teams.

Not that Sandin is in the same category as Cirelli, but I bet there a few GMs that wish they had offered him. Not only to get the player but to mess up TBs cap.

That’s what a normal GM would do but a Galaxy Brain……….who knows
