was thinking about the last couple games and ristolainen. he has had some f ups that hurt the team, and some mess ups that ended up luckily not turning into any trouble. he has also had moments where he has looked really good though. hes 27 i think, im not talking about flashes of greatness, just moments and some shifts in a row where he has looked very good, serviceable. with that being said, i think the best role for him on this team in the future would be a great 5-6 defenseman that can step up the line up when needed. if heworks or is used as a 3-4, he needs to be with an ellis, ghost, kimo, offensive player because i dont think he will ever be a drive playing outlet sending dman without being too much of a determent. sanhiem is good and im a big fan and think he is and will continue to do well at the 2nd pairing spot hes in, i just dont think hes at a place where he is good enough to benefit ristos play right now to make him a perminant fixture on a second pairing. he could be in the future though. best case scenario for me is he shakes off the rust from being injured, gets his game to the highest level he is capable of and turns into the bruising 2nd pairing guy that can put up some points and goals with that shot he has while playing a tighter cleaner game in his own zone. worst case scenario is he gets a little better, is the player he is now and flyers resign him to a deal to play on the third pairing, or trade him and try to get something for him because i dont think he will be willing to sign at a price the flyers would be willing to pay if hes not in the top 4.

dont forget the fletcher factor though, he could throw a 7 mil 6 year deal at him, who knows

Ghost assisted on 4 of the 7 goals the coyotes scores this season. On a bad team. Playing nearly 20 minutes. Fisto played ZERO minutes. Who is your Daddy?????

That's apples and oranges.
Risto replaced Myers, not Ghost.
Yandle is in the role Ghost would have if he was still here. And Yandle is doing a better job at far less cost, without blocking a young LHD next season.

Like deadhead said, Yandle should be your Ghost comparison and he's outproducing Ghost so far. Myers should be your Risto comparison and he's already been a healthy scratch multiple times.

So, if you factor in Ellis, our defense has still improved, even if Ristolainen hasn't been good so far.

Nobody should be a Ghost comparison this year. His competition is the ice girls that clean the ice during tv time outs, the backup equipment manager and one of the 60 yr old former NHLers that have retired there.

Chayka stressed analytics to build that team and as a result left that team with virtually nothing in the pipeline.

Did he, though?

John Chayka's Reverse Moneyball

That lays out how he went against a lot of analytics, and also his total lack of coherent strategy for the "rebuild" or whatever in hell it is they're doing over there.

Are you comparing guys across teams?

I thought we can't judge players who are on bad teams?

Trade a 1st and 2nd for Ghost, then give him a few years to see if he's better than Risto/Yandle or not.

No, I think we are always allowed to judge players. It's coaches we cannot judge unless they have a flawless roster. That the roster is always so deeply flawed is also somehow never management's fault.

Arizona and Philly are obviously directly comparable situations in terms of talent.

so no one is gunna mention that Yandle looks like hes slowing down and gassing out already not even 10 games in ??

yah didnt think so...
I definitely expected a lot more consistency from Yandle leading successful breakouts and entries. People talk about him being better than Ghost, yet that's one area where he's been a distinct downgrade and with Ellis out the only guy on the backend who can do it well is Sanheim. I've slammed Risto for the one eternal shift where he did much to keep us trapped in our zone as the puck routinely went back and forth along the end boards, but I've also noted Yandle was the other half of that on defense and he did nothing to get the team clear either.

Yandle simply is a mediocre skater at this stage. He’s not that skillful a puck handler either in the traditional sense. He’s not going to be a self-creating entry/exit threat. What he excels at is patience and vision — he’s crafty with his delays and fakes. A lot of the time he just holds it forehand until someone takes the bait. But against a fast forecheck, he’s reduced to a lot of desperation smacking the puck up ice. That’s the good and the bad. Comparing him to He Who Must Not Be Named isn’t particularly illuminative beyond role.

Risto was an overpay, doesn't change the fact the team is better with Yandle than Ghost and his $9M over two years.
Ghost hasn't been a top 4 D-man since 2017-18, when he was exposed in the playoffs.
Yandle is also limited, but he's a better PP QB (Ghost depended on his agility and burst to buy time and space, but those were the days my friend . . . )

Now whether Risto works out is debatable, but I don't think Savard is a top 4 D-man. Just be thankful we didn't trade for Jones and give that contract.

Ghost is (in your eyes) over paid, but it doesn't change the fact that the team would have been better with Ghost plus a 1st and two 2nds than it would having Fistolainen.

Yandle isn't the Ghost replacement, Ristolainen is.
