It's definitely the opportunity cost that bothers me the most. If you parade that pick package around the league, you are going to get a player of significant value, maybe beyond a rental. But Fluck Chetcher is on record saying he coveted Ristolainen for years, and he was willing to pay a king's ransom -- beating out at least the Devils, Oilers, Canadiens, Jets -- for the privilege of renting (we hope) a 500 game reclamation project who was never good to begin with. A player who could take a big step and still be mediocre. He's the same damn player as he was in Buffalo because that's who he is. But he has a snarl when he makes a hit, and Fluck gets a tingle.
