No you find a job for him because of,what he did for the organization for the last decade.
Surely you hire the best person for the job, not the nice guy who you get on with?
Having said that, sports teams seem to do a lot of strange hirings

So, AV plays Girardi on the top pairing most of the season, but he gets bought out immediately. Maybe there is a disconnect between the coaching staff and front office?
There's a disconnect between AV and reality, so assuming Gorton lives on this planet with the rest of us...
Yup. AV's deployment of him made no sense.
Looking forward to McDonagh w/o G.
It's an interesting thought.
Things that are true about Girardi:
1. He played 22 minutes a night in the playoffs this year
2. He was bought out a month later.
That's gotta be a negative on 'talent-judgment' for AV, no?

It makes perfect sense when you consider the alternatives. You also have to consider that McD is used to playing with G and probably prefers playing with G outside of other options. The only other player who could have maybe filled that role was Smith, but he was new to the team and the system and had developed a good rapport with Skjei. No sense in breaking them up. Who else are you putting on the top pair? Clendening? Holden? Sometimes the devil you know is better.
Give me this:
McD - Trouba
Skjei - Smith
Holden - One of Bear/Graves/Pionk
Kampfer
What's a negative on "talent-judgment" for AV is the fact that in keeping with his "good-bad balance pairing", he managed to ice Staal-Holden.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Only question is how?
What were his alternatives though? Clendening? The organization isn't retaining him, so obviously they feel like he was crap too. Klein was incredibly inconsistent all year. Holden played in that role for a bit, then faltered.
For that reason as well I think Staal is on notice too--if the Rangers can offset his salary--even make some savings with a cheaper, younger D he might be gone next year.
