Confirmed with Link: Rangers Will Buy Out Dan Girardi

The scary thing about this is that this means the Rangers think Staal has something left in the tank.

Not necessarily. It could just mean the Rangers view Girardi's buyout as less odious. Or, maybe, there is interest in Staal, moreso than we as fans think there should be.

There is no doubt that it is. 2 years at ~$2m, 1 year at ~$3m, 1 year at ~4m, 4 years at ~1.5m.

Sorry, the Staal buyout makes zero sense for the Rangers to do, no matter how bad people around here think he is.

It makes perfect sense when you consider the alternatives. You also have to consider that McD is used to playing with G and probably prefers playing with G outside of other options. The only other player who could have maybe filled that role was Smith, but he was new to the team and the system and had developed a good rapport with Skjei. No sense in breaking them up. Who else are you putting on the top pair? Clendening? Holden? Sometimes the devil you know is better.

You don't need to break them up when every close ****ing playoff game AV never played them. It still steams me the way that jackass used those two.

Yes, this has to be the most logical conclusion. Staal's buyout was more cost prohibitive than G's and I think he has more "value". Value being relative.

Side effect of buying out Girardi: Staal may be more amenable to waiving his NTC in order to be dealt to a team who won't buy him out.

Good point.

Also, slowly but surely, many of the guys he came up with have already left the team, one after another. Basically it's just him and Hank now. I mean, I'm sure he's got good relationships with guys like Stepan, Zuke, Kreider, McD, etc. who've been here a decent amount of time, but they're all from a "class" after him - Hank, Cally, Dubi, G, AA, and Korpi were really the crew that came up together.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him waive to go to a desirable location. I honestly think it's the contract that's a problem more than anything else...

All players are amenable to waiving their NTC for a team they want to play on. That's the whole point of a NTC - to be in control of your future. He's not going to all of a sudden want to play for the Avalanche

It was never his fault that Vigneault can't manage a roster with anything other than the careful consideration of a drunk behind the wheel.

He was a great Ranger and was a huge part of helping them achieve a period of success that's unprecedented compared to the majority of the NYR's history

Staal wont be bought out until his last year if that. Its too much dead cap on top of girardis.

Enough with this dead cap. Staal on the ice is literally dead cap and dead crap rolled into one. Staal in the press box is literally dead cap and $5,700,000 of it. Adam Clendening at $750,000 playing on his off side with $3,000,000 of dead cap from a Staal buyout would be superior to Staal playing on crutches eating up the full $5,700,000. If the time comes when Staal is completely broken down which I suspect will happen during the next season, Gorton will have to do something drastic. If it requires another buyout then so be it.

Why would this make you think that? I'd say it means that buying out Staal would leave us with dead cap space for a longer period of time. One of them had to go, so they bought out the worse player on the shorter contract.

Maybe Staal can be moved @ 50%. Who knows? We won't know for sure until it's October and he's still on the team.

Yea I could see G playing on the 3rd pairing for another season or two. Staal is just brutal. Wish he was gone instead.

Did they try to move G or just bought him out?

I`m not sure about M. Staal - he was fine in the beginning of last season until he was injured.

If Skjei is staying on the left side the minutes really aren't there for Staal. If Skjei continues to improve he'll probably get a really nice payday next summer--at least $3.5 mil per. 39 points last year as a bottom pairing defense first oriented rookie. What if he's in the 40's or pushes 50 next year? We're going to have to pay for that. He can skate and move the puck. He can defend. McDonagh and Skjei first and second pairing on the left side is where they should be. Which is another reason I thought Staal should have been the one to be bought out.

He's the worse player with the worse contract with a full NMC that can't be traded. That's why I say that.

There was a chance you could've traded Girardi, shed the salary, and paid some of it to the team you're trading him to without his approval.

You can't do **** without Staal's approval.

Well. You can next year. I'm guessing the Rangers will be approaching Staal the same way. I mean, the buyout on Staal is pretty punishing this year. Next year, its significantly better and his full NTC expires July 1.

And as I said earlier, buying out Girardi should make Staal more amenable to accepting a trade to keep his full salary intact.
