Confirmed with Link: Rangers Will Buy Out Dan Girardi

Dan Girardi will get signed and put to rest the "he's not an NHL player" anymore. Rangers should've bought out Staal and kept Girardi as a 6/7.

They both suck. Wouldnt be surprised if Staal is bought out in a couple of years aswell.

He's bad, but Girardi was way worse.

i dont know about that. i wouldn't say way worse. Staal struggled even against montreals depth forwards and thats saying something. Only reason he wasn't bought out is because his cap hit was even worse than Girardi's.

Staal looked worse because he didn't have a McDonagh to carry him

Staal would look just bad with mcdonagh. Look both are terrible at this point in their careers unfortunately they both were given bad contracts with ntc.
I would say at least Girardi can somewhat play the pk.

Idk why people are surprised there is interest.

As a 3rd pair veteran presence who can PK well, if a team knows how to properly utilize and shelter him at 5v5 and sign him for 1.5m per for 2 years? That's not awful.

Yeah no, how about they both stink. I have seen enough in the last 3 years to know I am ecstatic about that buyout.

Meh. What do you really save?

Contract:

2017-18 5.5M - buyout "hit" 2.61M + player to replace him low end ~1.5M = 1.4M
2018-19 5.5M - buyout "hit" 3.61M + player to replace him low end ~1.5M = negligible
2019-20 5.5M - buyout "hit" 3.61M + player to replace him low end ~1.5M = negligible
20-21: buyout "hit" $1.11M - nearly negates 1.4M you saved in year one, lost cap space
21-22: buyout "hit" $1.11M - wasted money / lost cap space
22-23: buyout "hit" $1.11M - wasted monty / lost cap space

I guess where I'm at here is that he could've played limited minutes in a 6/7 role instead of against guys like Crosby & Ovechkin, PK minutes, leadership by example, & probably stays healthy/fresh the entire year.

i don't think Staal is worth a **** in any capacity at this point. I realize others feel this way about G. I don't and neither do the reported 10+ teams interested in him. TB is a big analytics team and they're interested. That should say something.

Girardi at the NHL level in any capacity is bad.

would not be shocked to see Girardi playing bottom pairing defense and seeing pk time for a legit contender next year. Leafs or Lightning or some team of that ilk.
Glad we moved on from him but some other team will give him a chance.

It's addition by subtraction. I think he holds back McD and really hasn't been good. The negligible savings and the future cap hits to me are completely worth it. Again, nothing personal to Girardi, a true warrior, a good locker room guy etc etc. I simply think he's not a good hockey player but that's what opinions are for.

Well, we know that because we've watched his demise and seen him play every night.

I'm saying I can see the logic behind an NHL club being interested in him. Veteran with tons of playoff experience, good PKer, thinking they can play him 3rd line sheltered role and most of all in the cap world, he will be cheap.

No it won't. Just because he gets signed doesn't make him suddenly have the abilities of an NHL player. It just means there's a GM out there who believes that he does, foolishly. Let's see how he performs in a sheltered role before declaring he's still an NHL player.

Totally disagree. Not suited for the role the Rangers were forced to play him in but from December on he was miles better than Staal IMHO. Staal dropped off a cliff.

Girardi exceed in Torts system as "warrior " aka bowling pin... but even during those years his game was plagued by poor puck management under pressure, getting beat to the outside, losing man around the net... the playoffs against NJD and Boston and LA... atrocious decision making. ...

So glad this guy is gone...
