Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

we do need to choose between Woll and Stolarz this summer

One should be gone by the draft.

Stolarz if we are banking this is the norm and he can play 40-45 starts he gets 4 year deal at 7M next summer (like Ulmark but lower AAV/cap % due to less experience at 1A quality level of play)

Why? Both are under contract for the combined price of a starter. The team is trying to win now and goaltending has become a team strength for the first time since the Quinn years

Don't see why we need to disrupt that.

If the team wants to go all in on Stolarz eventually when he needs a new contract they can just trade Woll the following summer instead

The only asset the Leafs need to hold on to is Cowan - he's a legit fan favourite and has top 6 potential soon.

Everything else should be on the table.

Brad wasted a 69 goal, selke candidate year from Auston last year.

Would be a shame to do that again - 3-4 years is all that's left with this group, if not now, then when?

Or like 3 1sts. Trading Lundell would be bad for team chemistry since there are so many Finnish player on the Panthers

But the Leafs need to trade Knies for him... right.

Panthers don't have 1st round picks for the next 2 drafts. They only have a 2nd round pick for 2026.

How did he waste it? What didn't he do? Just curious

I don't understand this sentiment that 3-4 years is all that's left with this group. If we lock Marner and Knies up on reasonable 8 year deals, with the cap going up in the future, the window would be years 3-6 of their new contracts.

I guess 3-4 years is the extent of Matthew's contract? (The captain who didn't sign a 8 year deal?). With he's decline this year, it might be smart to trade him when he still has value.

I think Cowan's probably less of a sure thing than Minten - higher ceiling, lower floor, and plays a much easier position to replace/fill. I could see him being more like an Anthony Beauviller or Sam Steel.

Matthews got hurt going for 70 so, that didnt help, and was also when Nylander couldnt play either right?

Age mostly.

In 4 years the core will be well passed their prime.

I wouldn't trade Knies for Rantanen. I would trade Knies for Byram +, or Jiricek +++, though....

It'll be interesting to see what Zito does

And that's exactly why you needed more offensive punch to overcome those injuries and lack of offence.

Same thing happened when Tavares went down vs Montreal, Dubas made a mistake getting Foligno over someone with more punch(like Hall).

Goalies have limited value, you have to be able to capitalize at the right time or you miss out on good assets.

Running a tandem next year risks us losing Stolarz next summer if we dont give him an extension early tmnext season.

Having 2 good goalies doesnt help us much as only 1 can play at a time.

We should be proactive and use either to add assets which can fix up the some of the flaws on this team.

If Woll gets a 1st or 2 2nds this summer it would be smart to move him and committ 5-6M to Stolarz and then add a backup for 2M or so.

Call me Nostradamus.

You sure you ain't quasimodo my friend?

They'll be past their prime, but their play shouldn't have fallen off a cliff though. With younger players stepping up like Danford, Minten, Cowan, Knies. Our window should be beyond that. Unless of course Matthews leaves after his contract.... which is why, it might be smart to trade Matthews for younger players like Fantilli and Johnson now
