Confirmed with Link: Rangers Will Buy Out Dan Girardi

Sens fan here, not sure if any other Sens fans have asked this, but do you guys see him as still being a serviceable 5/6 guy if signed at the right price. A lot of mixed opinions on the Sens board about whether he'd be worth pursuing so just curious.

I think he'd suffice on the 3rd pairing. He was generally put in over-his-head situations with us...and rarely got the 3rd pairing time I thought he was suited for. Pay the guy Holden money, throw him on your final pairing, and he'll earn his money. And if someone gets hurt on one of your upper pairings, Dan has the experience to possibly rekindle some of what he lost and handle tougher match-ups (on a short term basis). Go for it.

I will miss him. I know his play declined but I also know why it declined. He was a class act. I hope he comes back in some way soon. Few were as dedicated to this team.

I've already seen fans of other teams that trashed him all of a sudden saying that they hope they sign him as a cheap third pairing guy. Too funny.

It's because of his contract... if he was played where he should've been and the price he should've been.

He's a great locker room guy... a leader... and was a warrior for most of his career.

Dan Girardi gave all he had as a player to the NY Ranger organization, but this had to be done. I wish him the best in his future endeavours.

I think Girardi is ideally a 6/7 at this point. You can use him situationally against certain opponents and he'll be extremely effective, but there are a number of matchups where he stands a chance of getting burned. Limit his games to keep him fresh and I think everything he brings could be worth the risk.

A classy/guy and player but most hockey players are. He came up the hard way and was a good player before he broke down 3-4 years ago. Anyhow, it's a great move by JG. This instantly makes the team better.

Staal should be counting his lucky stars. He should have been the one bought out but the cap hit was even worse than Girardi's. Obviously Gorton made the only move he could make at this point. I mean they probably should be both bought out but we all knew that would be impossible.

The tweet about him continuing his NHL career really gets me, because he could have finished making his remaining money on his current contract instead of losing 1/3 of it, and it would have helped the rangers with the buyout cap hit issues.

Was hopeing a team would want him at half cap hit when he submitted his list but i imagine the rangers organization explored all those options before the buy out.

He was a long time favorite of mine but his current contract was bad from day 1 and it only got worse the last 3 years when he fell into bottom pair play. Hopefully he finds a future that makes him as happy as his time in NY.

On the bright side now we just need to get rid of Staal and our defense might have a shot.
