Let’s be clear about 1 thing.

We had 3-4 top 6 dmen without mcdonagh.
Skjei
Shattenkirk
ADA
Pionk
Graves

We have these guys in the top 6:
Zibby
Buch
Hayes
Miller
Kreider

With these guys coming up:
Andersson
Chytil.

We have depth and 4th liners:
Fast
Boo
Letierri
Vesey
Plus whoever can make it from gropp tambo and that group

We have hank and shestyorkin as our present and future in net.

This isn’t Edmonton or buffalo. This could be San Jose or Anaheim

I would prefer this team have a 1C and a 1D like every team worth a damn.

And trading one for the other would even be an improvement on this.

We're trading one for a crapshoot at getting the other.

True. My hope would be that we get a young developing 1D in the McDonagh trade.

Or even a Brassard-Zibanejad situation where we trade McDonagh to Winnipeg for Trouba+

Notice in the article they mentioned get NHL or NHL ready young players - that's not quite the same as Buffalo and Edmonton's strategy of throwing away everything banking on picks. I've been saying most of the year that they team can be rebooted and even more competitive in a year or two if they go for proven young players instead of picks.

I do like that. But what young NHL talent is stepping in for McDonagh?

Worst defensive team in the league as it is trading their best defenseman. Am I seriously the only one who sees the problem there?

Only thing is they've said this before and they have never actually done it one time since 2004.

Also if you're going to sell - fine - but get actual prospects not late first round picks. Late firsts are so overrated.

Future 1st pair D man Brady Skjei and his buddy Kevin Hayes wave hello

Well, is it a rebuild where we go into next season with nothing but young players, or is it a retool where we trade off a bunch of guys then turn around and sign Tavares with the cap space?

Because in theory you could do both. Get young roster players on ELC's, and sign a franchise center. Tavares is 27, he'll be around for the forseable future.
With what defense? Or do we sign OEL or Karlsson the next offseason as well?

What are the chances that this is just another elaborate ruse, like comparing Tom Poti and Mark Streit?

Your 2018 template, assuming all named players are dealt is

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Miller-Hayes-___________
Chytil-Andersson-_______
Vesey-Nieves-Fast

Skjei-Shattenkirk
_____-Smith
Staal-DeAngelo

That's actually remarkably few holes to fill given how many big guys are getting moved.

It's few holes to fill in terms of quantity, but the one on defense is a f***ing galaxy.

McDonagh is the foundation of the house.

I love Shattenkirk and Smith and I respect Skjei's ability, but everyone gets a massive role increase.

It's the same thing we saw at center this year. Is Derek Stepan an irreplaceable talent? f*** no, much less so than McDonagh, but we couldn't afford everyone moving up a spot.

I supported the Stepan move because there's other Stepan's. Players in McDonagh's tier simply don't become available.

And if I recall our previous conversations, you don't think Carlson is as close to McDonagh as some suggest.

It would be really amazing if Gorts could somehow use the assets from some of these deals to turn into Dahlin, but given the hype the kid has gotten it would be hard to secure that pick.

Brooks was handed this story on a silver platter as a way for us to say on a day off before the break that we are open for business place your orders now.

This is as good as gospel

Amen.

On top of that, both McDonagh and Zuccarello have massive value RIGHT NOW. If we wait till even this offseason, they are effectively UFA's to be, and the trade value will be massively diminished unless you can find a team that wants to do a sign and trade.

Brooks isn't calling for a firesale, he's saying that he's listening on these guys. My gut says the following guys are gone:

Nash
Grabner
Zuccarello
Pavelec (assuming Manezec is healthy)
Holden
Deharnais

I would like to see Miller shipped out too--I'm on board with SF on this one, the guy is a high end middle 6 all-around player, but he's nothing more than that. I would not pay him $5M/year for 5 years

Carlson could shoot through a tank, which is nice, but he's clueless in his own zone.

He's closer to the perception of Shattenkirk than Shattenkirk actually is.

The forward group isn't half bad, although Miller will be extremely overpaid and Vesey should be playing for a different team. And Chytil and Andersson have to be the real deals. The defense though? I don't see how that gets rebuilt quickly. Total garbage on the backend.

We will be betting a lot in guys like Chytil and Andersson to make an impact as rookies. Next year could be ugly.

Karlsson will be going UFA, and maybe Doughty too. They are above McD's tier.

When have they said this before?

The Callahan year in particular. They said they were going to deal him and all their upcoming UFA's if they didn't re-sign and yes they did deal him but it was a rare situation for an upgrade not for picks/prospects as implied.

Future 1st pair D man Brady Skjei and his buddy Kevin Hayes wave hello

Joey Hishon, Auston Watson, Beau Bennett, Riley Sheahen, Jared Tinordi, Quinton Howden, Mark Visentin, Emerson Etem wave hello (5 of the 7 picks before Hayes, the pick directly after him, and the pick three/five of him.

So do Jordan Schmaltz, Brandon Gaunce, Henrik Samuelsson, and Stefan Matteau (the 3 picks directly before and one directly after Skjei)

It's funny. In that scenario our defense is actually awful instead of the coach just being crazy.

Sad thing is, under a good coach, it would perform way better than this one. Not good enough, granted.
