They’re not dealing Mcdonagh without a monster return which would include a stud young dman is my guess

The Rangers, I am sure, will have a long-term outlook on this. Whether they get a NHL ready stud defenseman in that specific deal isn't my concern as long as they bring one by the beginning of next season and to be honest, guys like Shattenkirk, Smith and Skjei should be able to handle larger roles. These guys are proven top-4 NHL defensemen and they need to play like it. Time to take the kid gloves off.

I do like that. But what young NHL talent is stepping in for McDonagh?

Worst defensive team in the league as it is trading their best defenseman. Am I seriously the only one who sees the problem there?
Not sure anyone could step in to McD’s shoes today, but for example if they got a Sergachev type (not saying I expect him specifically but he’s a good example of a young top tier d man) would that be the worst thing? Cheaper for a lot more years than McD, a lot younger, can reasonably be a top pairing player in the very very near future.

Also I think it’s really hard to measure how good or bad this roster is defensively with AV behind the bench. I hope/pray getting rid of him is part of this whole scheme. I truly think they’d be a far superior defenseive team with another coach.

Imo McD is the main guy here they shouldn’t move unless or until they secure an excellent young dman plus as a return. If that’s not out there, re sign him and that’s not a disasterous outcome either. I suspect something makes management wary though - maybe they’ve gotten an idea of what he wants and it’s insane?

Yandle got a 1st + 2nd + Duclair + Moore with 1.5 seasons left on his contract and salary retained. Different market + Sather factor but McD should return more than that

The reality is that, the way Vegas is playing this season, I'm not even sure our concept of roster building is the most important factor in a team's success.

If they plan on retooling in any of the ways described here so far, there's just one thing that we need above all- and that's a direction. The players we draft, sign, and trade for need to be strategic and within the mild of what will fit the system that the head coach wants to employ. In AV's case, that's puck-moving defensemen, fast wingers, and defensively responsible centers.

Show me that you have a plan that isn't just about asset management and on-paper rosters. The team needs an identity.

The other thing is, Shattenkirk is #1 in this scenario, and I don't think I can mentality tolerate this forum under a Shattenkirk reign as #1 D

Why is it a frustrating day? Did something else happened that I missed?
Well i know so many here wanted to lose, which is quite honestly pathetic to call yourself a fan and want to lose. Its one thing if going into the season you have a roster much like one of the Sabres the past several years with no continuity, no track record, no playoff experience and as a fan say we should hope we get a lottery pick.

But this team has a roster that can compete in this very weak and up for grabs Eastern Conference. They have done as such all season. Losing Kreider might have been the tipping point on the scale. But this team was right there and a couple of forward pieces away from having a more complete roster to enter the playoffs with.

I can understand the decision, although I think its a little soon, but my God it is utterly embarrassing to see Rangers fans celebrating selling off pieces with the hope to be a lottery team which would take a lot of losing because we are on the bubble of a playoff spot. Its shameful. You shouldnt even be allowed to watch, rooting for your team to lose. “Fans”

Lol yeah me either. “Sure he scored 10 points last night but did you see that lazy backcheck?!”

I think there are some good potential d men who can make up good deals though. What are your thoughts about potentially getting a Makar or Heisakanen (almost definitely butchered that) or Brannstrom type in exchange for McD? Obviously next year would be rough but as soon as the year after it could be a lot brighter.

The article specifically says they don’t plan on bottoming out and counting on the lottery.

NYR have a ton of D prospects who project as possible 2nd or 3rd pairing guys. Pionk, DeAngelo, Graves, Day. Haveandare is right, they need a real blue-chipper with #1 potential. Not a Honka, but a possible first-pairing player.

Shouldn't be hard to get Toronto to include Liljegren in the right trade.

Why do you think trading McDonagh automatically signals a new dark age for 7-10 years?

A rebuild could be accomplished immediately depending on the returns.

Because we'd be getting rid of our best player in an area of the game where the team is already awful. How do you figure the defense actually improves in the next 2-3 years if McDonagh goes?

Mac aside, I'm hopeful that guys like DeAngelo and Graves will ultimately be upgrades over Holden and Staal. Having 3 pairs of good blueliners would be useful.

We aren't selling McD for peanuts, the return would have to be massive for they to pull the trigger.

I'm not against trading him because I think his contract will be horrible midterm, he doesn't have a good injury report history.

I agree, I think we'd have a better defense this season with different personnel.

Like @aufheben said, I think the system also plays a part. But I'm not convinced the defense is great right now, even if we had the right 6 players playing every game and we had a better system. I think its still missing a #2D.

If this is our sad direction...trade Henrik to a contender so he can win his Cup and we get some sort of return for arguably the greatest Ranger ever. It would be a painful travesty to see him have to work in front of the product that will be the short term potential. Selfishly at least I'd have another team to root for in the interim.

Between these trades and the picks we get for this year's draft, we can change the entire direction of the franchise.

It's one of the most important deadlines/off-season we've had in a very long time.

Gorton better hit a grand slam here. It will likely define his tenure as GM.
