The Rangers are 2-6 on Tuesday nights this season, their second worst day of the week after Friday.

It wasn't just the defense that was bad tonight, it was the defense from the forwards.

The top line scores plenty now that Nash is on fire, but my god do they bleed goals.

Kreider is the very definition of a risk/reward player. With the exception of the Isle PP goal, he was on the ice for literally EVERY GOAL. For, and against.

The Richards line in particular was a mess in their own end. Richards, I expect that from, but Cally and Hags? Hell no. These are 2 players that you put out there when you need the puck up ice no matter what, and that line got hemmed in their own zone for so long at times that it was embarrassing. We know these are 2 good defensive players, hell, for those looking for odd stats, this was the first EV goal against Callahan has been on the ice for since his return from injury.

A good amount does fall on the defense (my GOD what the hell happened to John Moore?), but the Isle absolutely destroyed our man-on defense tonight. Nobody should be surprised; they skate as fast as our team, and are on the whole better passers. Those two combined have our team CONSTANTLY one step behind, or trying desperately to get back into position.

We haven't seen much of the problem with the defense lately because the puck possession time has been overwhelmingly in our favor, but it was bound to happen.

For our team to win games like this, they need to start winning the 1-on-1s, which we lost a lot of tonight. Extended offensive pressure, forcing turnovers in the neutral zone, and quick exits from the defensive zone all need to be staples of our play for us to win. We were 0 for 3 in that respect.

Talbot did about everything you can ask from a back up. He's not an elite goaltender. He's a rookie back up who's being asked to give his team a chance to win. I'd say he did his job.

The Islanders will be good if they remain patient. Reinhart and Pulock joining their blue line. They have Visnovsky for another year but he hasn't been playing. They need to sign a goalie. Maybe one smart package of lower tier young dmen (Donovan/Streit/Hickey/etc) and a pick for an older dman to stabilize them while De Haan and the two prospects gain experience the next season or two. We're going to hate the Islanders a lot more in a year or two.

Teams playing well enough for me not to get too mad.

Gotta bounce back and beat a good STL team.

agreed. Not a horrible game. Losing a 3-1 lead is bad, but they played well especially before the too many men penalty...

I'm scared STL will come out flying after being humiliated by NJ

That's the thing. I wasn't that mad after losing to Tampa. I was incredibly frustrated. Same thing about the first Boston game. The team showed a lot of promise. I don't know how you can say they played well today though. Every time we were in our zone it seemed like they had a chance. I want to say they weren't terrible offensively. We were decent when in their zone, but we never had the puck.

I agree with this. When we were up 3-1 I was thinking "it's good to be able to pull out wins even when we don't have our A game." We used to win games like that bc of Hank (not that we don't any more), but it was nice to think we coulda done it by capitalizing on a few chances.

We played a very similar game last year against the Isles. We were better for a bit longer that game. We started like a house on fire. Then went up 2-0, and were terrible in the last 5 minutes of the 1st, I think we gave up 1. Then we were dominated in the 2nd, like we got dominated at times today, maybe worse. Then had about 10 good minutes in the 3rd (similar to today). We lost in the shootout. The big difference was that last year we had a Hank playing the 2nd best season of his career. Today (or yesterday) we had a rookie goaltender who was put in a buzz saw.

Sucks losing after blowing two 2 goal leads but the one thing I liked was the pressure they had when trying to tie from 2 mins down to 0. (aside from Girardi's gaffe)

It was the first time in a while that I thought they were going to score from the chances they were generating and moving the puck.

Just got back from the game. Too drunk to really comment on anything. Maybe it's the alcohol, but I wasn't too upset by the performance and the loss. **** happens, the team didn't perform all that well tonight. Given their play the last few weeks, that's fine. They had a bad game. As Torts said in 24/7, you had a bad one, that's fine, just don't have another one for a long time. Let's hope the boys bring it against St. Louis.

That's what I'm worried about. Normally I'd think we have a chance but that team will be SEETHING after getting humiliated by a team like the Devils. Unless they're in some sort of mental funk I can't see us winning that game. The Blues are too good of a team to lose after losing 7-1, at least to a good but not great Rangers team.

Girardi got burned bad by Tavares on his assist behind Talbot and in the GW goal. He's played well recently but there are still signs of age

Just saw the score of Devils-Blues. Yeaaaaa...Blues get humiliated, you have to imagine they'll bring it on Thursday.

Tough loss. Shame to squander a 2-0 lead, then a 3-1 lead, but hey happens to the best sometimes. Rangers have been playin great hockey lately, and the occasional loss is bound to happen.

We'll bounce right back to it Thursday.

I'm really likin these early first period goals by Nash though. Great way to start a game.

The Goalbuster was off his game tonight, unfortunately. In either case, Talbot's still a great backup and from the games he's had this season to say this was one of his worst is pretty decent considering.

Bottom line they played bad as a whole. The team defense was atrocious. Too much running around in their own end. Too much chasing. Couldn't get puck possession with sustained efforts to wear down the Islanders. Poulin was shaky from the get go and they could not capitalize with more shots. They should not have lost to the Islanders.

A bad game is not everything.

Its a bit telling though that we loose a 2 goal lead, twice, on one night. We are very on/off and especially against these faster teams that makes us move around a lot, like Tampa too.

Usually not a good recipe for a team in the NHL. Undoubtedly, our potential is higher than ever before, but before sorting things out, lets hope things don't get ugly again. On/off usually means ugly. Many teams competing with us pick up a pt at worst even in game they have no business to compete in.

Nash disappeared besides his cherry-picking goal.

Nash is what he is. Are there a bunch of players in this league more valuble than him? Yeah sure. Is it optimal if a player paid like a "franchise" player is not able to comfortable run the team's PP and what not? No.

But OTOH we don't have anyone like him. Its not easy to get a player like him. When you get to certain stages, especially in the PO's, and you don't have a player like Nash -- it can hurt you. That interchangeable group of players only work so long. Having a guy that other teams must match D's against etc, just has a big impact in those situations. The best of 7-series.

Nash is really really hated in NY because he is supposed to lead the way a lone and pwn every game he hits the ice in, and he isn't able too. That sucks. Life is tough. But we have gone down this road so many times before. Sometime I just think that we must make the best of the situation and make a player -- for once -- work for us. You make your own bed.

Exactly. Look im a big zucc fan but he hasnt been as good lately

You know, something was obviously going on today when he sees even less ice than Pouliot, WITH his 2 penalties. Its not like AV suddenly lost confidence in him.

Last game he was alright, nothing spectacular, but also nothing wrong. His line is not a high scoring one and his production will suffer because of it.

The games previous to that he was named one of the stars of the match and was playing to that capability. Its like time on this forum ends after the whistle blows and the day before yesterday becomes a distant memory in which time is measured in "lately" and "a while".

Girardi with his awful D and Kreider with his impossibly stupid penalty, which did infact lead to the GWG cost us the game, its really that simple. Complete garbage

What did Zuccarello do to end up in the dog house?

I think its as simple as we taking a two goal leading, and basically knowing that we got two easy pts as long as we can keep the opponents somewhat on the outside and making it hard for them.

Ie, if you are coaching in that situation, you want a bit more thight game and you want it to head in the right direction. You do not want to exchange chances with the other team. Hence you might turn a little bit more towards our 4th line and Cally for example.

Isles bring out the worst in us, everytime we play them its like the 7th game of the Stanley Cup Finals for them...

He had a pretty big hit tonight and besides a couple of bad passes, had a decent enough game.

He wasn't great, no. Neither was anybody else on this team.

Nobody on this forum has commented on his great play over the past 3 weeks. Again, the sudden hatred of Callahan blows my mind.

You wanna know what blows my mind?

Talking to Avs fans on the main boards tonight about ROR. Here we have a ~55 point two way player, who will probably get close to 6.5 in summer that Colorado fans worship as a deity and by all indications wouldn't move for Gretzky.

On the Rangers we have a ~55 point two way player that's singled out regularly after games and whom fans are clamoring to pawn off at the deadline.

Sure Callahan isn't having a very good season (coming off multiple major injuries) and sure there's a gap between ROR and Callahan. But look at the gap between the way each fanbase reacts to the two players.

Now that blows my mind.

The reason Kreider was on for so many goals was because his line was against Tavares, who is flat out unbelievable.

The Rangers lost. That does not mean they sucked. The Islanders are becoming a very good high pressure offensively gifted team. The Rangers were outplayed. It does not mean they mailed it in or that they suck. Sometimes you lose. It is not always because your team sucked.

Girardi got burned by arguably the second best forward on the planet. He must suck.

You will be the first guy complaining if Sather signed Callahan to a long term contract at huge dollars like you were in the Lundqvist thread six weeks ago. How its a lateral movement and it it just too much.

ROR will be 23. Callahan will be 29. Why does Callahan have the multiple injuries? He will continue to suffer the injuries with the way he plays especially as he gets older or he will change his style which makes him less effective. Which is it?

The Islanders play better from behind. Being down a goal or two brings out the best in them. The Rangers had a 2-0 and 3-1 lead but they weren't playing well. The Rangers are beginning a tough stretch with playing the Islanders 3 times, the Blues and Jersey in the next two weeks. Hitchcock will have the Blues ready for tomorrow after losing to Jersey last night.
