We just added 2 first round picks so there is your rebuilding through the draft. We just traded for a young defensemen in AD. We just signed a defensemen that push comes to shove we can also trade down the road.

Adding first round picks doesn't make the team younger. There's no guarantee draft picks make the NHL ever.

This team could've gotten younger this season, we didn't.

We subtracted Stepan, Girardi, Klein, Raanta

We added Pavelec, Smith, Shattenkirk and ?

Thats not younger, maybe not any older, but its not what teams mean when they talk about getting younger.

And neither will likely start the season in the NHL.

I wouldn't say likely but its possible they won't but they are NHL players and probably ready especially Deangelo.

We did get younger. If you wanna tank thats one thing but there is nothing worse than missing the playoffs like we did in the early 2000's.
I rather make the playoffs and NOT be buyers at the deadline like we did with Staal. Obviously that wasn't a smart move.

Absolute steal of a pick up by gorton 4 years?! Unreal deal for us

Man does brooks look awful today. Adamant we didn't want him when everyone on the planet knew this was going down today for two years.

Take the rest of the week off Larry you blew it

? = DeAngelo + 7th overall. Also traded Brassard for Zibanejad.

Still plenty of one for moves to be made. I think they're definitely looking at moving Staal or Holden one way or another. Again don't really think they traded for DeAngelo to put him in the AHL

Dunno about Berrglazov
If I had to guess they move Holden (easier) and third pair is Staal-DeAngelo/Bereglazov with one of those also as 7th D

I can't wait for Buch to get more playing time too. Shatty at the point with Buch and Mika at the right and left circles? Yes pls.

Also interested to see if Shattenkirk helps DeAngelo develop. Might be good to have a vet puck mover PP guy to get some tips from

The way I look at the D at the moment:

1. McDonagh
2. Skjei
3. Shattenkirk
4. Smith
5. DeAngelo
6. Bereglazov
7. Holden
8. Staal
9. Graves
10. Pionk

....which means we should move Holden ASAP/immediately--that we should plan on buying out Staal at the latest next summer.

Can Holden be sent to AHL? He could be good for kids in Hartford and be insurance in case of injuries. Otherwise, the only problem is his contract $ to create cap space at a trade deadline if needed is the only issue. Could he ask for a trade in this case if he would want to go? He sure would bring a mid round pick.

If it was 7x7 I would be right there with you PB.

It's basically an exact replacement of what Stepan had left. I personally think swapping the two will be more treading water than anything, but it's not an extension of the "can kicks" if you will.

Q: if they can acquire someone to replace Stepan via trade (without gutting the team)

What would you think?

There are rumors the Devils offered 7X7 and some even have them offering 7X7.5

He took a MASSIVE discount to play here.

Actually could end up earning him more money. He can get another contract at age 32 for 4-6 years and make another $30M

Very debatable. If they are, it's not a needle mover. Zib/Hayes/?/? is not close. Last year's D also not close.

It's absolutely better. The d went from an eyesore to top 5 in the league.

Stepan is a big loss, lindberg less so but still a loss. But if we knew anything about last year's team it's that we had a surplus of Fwds and a lack of d. That balance is fixed.

Not to mention that I'd expect some of Miller, Hayes, Z, buchnevich, vesey (especially the latter two since they have played 1 year) to improve.

In terms of the depth, Shattenkirk is without a doubt number 2. I love Brady, but Shatts just better at everything except skating.

Not a huge shattenkirk fan but this is a no brained imo. That said how many people on this board were saying we had a top defense after signing Yandle?

With Girardi, Staal, Boyle and a declining Klein getting plenty of minutes and Yandle stapled to the 3rd pair, you can't make that comparison.

Goalies aside we are already one of the younger teams in the NHL. Do you want to be young or do you want to win? Would you pass up Crosby for Buch?

Weren't we supposed to get younger? Shattenkirk and Smith are younger?

Wait, what??? Your number 1 McD and number 2 KS are both 28, number 3 Smith and numer 4 Skjei are 28 and 23 respectively and number 5 DeAngleo is 21. If Bereglazov can beat out Staal, he's number 6 at 23 years old. The top 4 are all also PO vets.

I know that's not as exciting as a lottery team throwing out some 19 year old straight from juniors but it's all we got and I ****ing love it. Youngest 21, oldest 28 with lots of mobility and experience - oh hell yeah.
