The Rangers spent $11M per for two 28 year old D in Shattenkirk and Smith. 4 year terms. Smith got a limited NTC. The structure and exact language of the NTC has not been reported yet. They could drop Smith to the 3rd pair if DeAngelo can show he can play. Trade Smith at some point in the contract which is probably front-loaded with a signing bonus paid today. I am sure Smith got a nice big check today.

More moves need to be made to relieve the logjam on D, create cap space and add younger assets,

Welcome back, RB!

Surprised by the term, but not surprised he's a Ranger at all.

Posted about it a while ago that he'd be here.

Fills a few needs, and the Rangers now have 3 offensive RHD.

Depth Chart is now very cap friendly for a move if you go lefty-righty

McD-Shatt
Skjei-DeAngelo
Smith-Pionk
Staal-Kampfer
Holden
Berez
Graves

Not saying that that's going to be the line up, but the Rangers can comfortably move Staal and or Holden.

A team like FLA/MIN could really use one of the two.

If the Rangers can somehow get Coyle/Bjugstad for Staal package, then the Rangers are set.

Would also love to see the Rangers grab Jay McClement for the 4th line.

I absolutely love this. The more I think about it, the better it is. The 6.9m AAV for 4 years was something I was happy with and it's even better now. I feel they added a NMC and dropped the AAV a bit

Rangers D looks pretty solid now

McD-Shatty
Smith-Skjei
Staal-Deangelo/Holden/Bereglazov/Graves
We have a #1, good #2 in Shatty, top 4 guy in Smith, and an already top 4 guy with potential to be a top pairing guy or even a #1 in Skjei. Staal is meh but his spot is locked down already and Deangelo is the Ho Sang of defensemen. Kid has too much talent. Or we also have a potential top 4 guy in Graves and a very good KHL defensive dman in Bereglazov.

"Rangers aren't interested in Shattenkirk"

- Larry Brooks

Why do you feel a need to trash Brooks?

Everyone had Shattenkirk getting 7 years, and the latest reports was 7m per.

We were prepared to go 4 years. Brooks was right, nobody expected Shatty to leave 49-26=23m on the table. Heck Brooks even said that Shatty only would be a Ranger if he left a ton of money on the table. Heck Brooks was right.

With the amount of trolling on the internet that torture everyone who acts publically I just don't like this widespread hate towards Brooks. Wait until he is gone, we fans will be much worse of because nobody will have the guts to say anything. Brooks doesn't make any calls or anything, if you don't agree with things he says so what? And if you can't handle even reading someone you disagree with -- don't read him. I can't understand why the mods allow this crap. I think it's pretty pathetic.

I don't agree with your ranking Pionk this high (you might be right). Kampfer is only ahead of Graves and Pionk, and even that very marginally.

Late to the party been on the Tampa forum. Good signing and good term Rangers D now stacked!

I'm with ya Ola. Any info he gets is clearly what the team wants him to hear. The NYR actually had the upper hand for once with KS making his intentions clear. Nixing trades, refusing to sign, social media ish. Leaking a strong no to Brooks and/or taking that posture up until to last moment may have been a factor with KS coming to the NYR with his proposal.

The Rangers used the 50% rule from the first year of the contract to the last year of the contract. When does the limited NTC begin and what is the language?

That's the Lefty-Righty depth chart at the moment. Not a ranking.

Rangers were talking to both Thornton and Marleau as a package. Patty wants term.

If they both signed, Shatts wouldn't have been possible.

The Rangers "coveted" Shattenkirk? They didn't offer a #1 pick to acquire him from the Blues and they didn't want to give out a huge long-term deal. The Rangers like Shattenkirk but they didn't love him.

I'm fine with the clauses. As long as the NMC is not throughout the entirety of the contract, like Girardi's it is a non issue

Larry Brooks doesn't add anything. He writes opinion pieces which, truthfully, seem based on whatever was suggested here a week prior. He says a Stepan trade is not happening and 2 hours later BOOM. Stepan traded to Arizona. He's so far removed from the organization right now, that he can't even be called a beat writer.

The players dislike him, Tortorella called him out several times. He is just a relic from another era. And that other clown Brett is just as bad. "Fast's injury means we can now protect Raanta for the expansion draft"

I respectfully disagree. You mentioned trolling. Do you think some people might equate Brooks to a troll in the press and on twitter? If Brooks can say nasty things to members of our team why should he be above having his own words shown?

I am against getting Shatty and not sure I -- love -- this deals. But there are pros and cons with everything.

1. It's pretty awesome to see how much Shatty wanted to be a Ramger, period.

2. Four years is the key. We have a use for Shattenkirk the coming years. Like nobody can argue that he won't help us next year and the year after that. But let's say we regret it after two years, then the buy-out would be 2.2m per for 4 years. It's a lot, but wouldn't inflict major damage to the organization. Let's say we want out after 3 years, then its 2.2m for 2 years.

3. What we lose is flexibility and opportunity the coming years. We don't have room to go hard in another direction. For young RDs to develop opportunity is the key, Shatty won't leave much PP time to DeAngelo and/or Pionk. I don't think we are winning because we got Shatty.

I can understand why Gorton made this decision. Going 7 years for Shatty would just have been hole in the head, 4 years is a different story. Still there are pros and cons.

The Rangers didn't need Brooks. The Rangers and other teams have been talking to Shattenkirk and his agent since last Sunday. Shattenkirk probably made a visit to the Rangers facility to meet him with Gorton and the rest of management. They told his agent what needed to be done during the week and the ball is in your court. The new free agent period has changed free agency.

I agree with both of you.

Clearly Larry is was and will be a part of negotiations. The NYR have their methods.

Trades are a different story entirely.

This organization doesn't leak, unless it suits them.

Not sure what's so hard to see about that. He's a pawn but not a hack... and there's nothing really wrong with that. I'm sure he washes their backs and they wash his at times. Symbiotic.
