Reading Gorton's quotes I get the feeling he's got a much better pulse on the team than Sather ever did. Add in the self-restraint to adhere to his no-5+ year policy and I feel really good about the direction the team is headed.

I was saying that back in 2014 when Cally and Dan needed new deals. Do you think he stole it from me? :)

The Rangers have a huge advantage over every other team, but at the same time it's a curse.

Because they can land every big name free agent, they will always be good and never have to rebuild. But, they will never get that 1st line center to really put them over the top to finally win a cup without getting a top 3 pick.

Best part of this deal is that it's a big blow to the "blow it up" crew.

We're not gonna suck. Deal with it.

It's an incredible compromise. Get good older players on short term deals, bring in a lot youth to compete for spots that will inevitably open up. Don't overpay for anyone on stupidly long contracts. KNOW WHEN IT IS TIME TO MOVE ON FROM PLAYERS!

Excellent off-season thus far.

How about this... now that they re-signed Smith AND signed Shatty.... trade McDonagh for that top-line center the Rangers need. McDonagh has just two years left, and his decline will happen whether people like it or not. Other GMs would lose their minds at the thought of trading for McDonagh, esp at that cap hit.

It sounds crazy on the surface, but is it?

The Rangers "coveted" Shattenkirk? They didn't offer a #1 pick to acquire him from the Blues and they didn't want to give out a huge long-term deal. The Rangers like Shattenkirk but they didn't love him.

Why pay for something you can get for free?

You've got Ranger goggles on.

He's not worth 6.65 for any year unless he magically learns to play defense, and we are still on the outside looking in for the playoffs. So between Smith and Shattenkirk we've spent 11M per year on these two who were exactly what we didn't need.

The only thing about this that isn't terrible is that its only four years, but this team is gonna be mediocre the next few years.

Sometimes it seems that you dislike everyone that has proved themselves at the NHL level and love players that haven't proved a thing.

I am against getting Shatty and not sure I -- love -- this deals. But there are pros and cons with everything.

1. It's pretty awesome to see how much Shatty wanted to be a Ramger, period.

2. Four years is the key. We have a use for Shattenkirk the coming years. Like nobody can argue that he won't help us next year and the year after that. But let's say we regret it after two years, then the buy-out would be 2.2m per for 4 years. It's a lot, but wouldn't inflict major damage to the organization. Let's say we want out after 3 years, then its 2.2m for 2 years.

3. What we lose is flexibility and opportunity the coming years. We don't have room to go hard in another direction. For young RDs to develop opportunity is the key, Shatty won't leave much PP time to DeAngelo and/or Pionk. I don't think we are winning because we got Shatty.

I can understand why Gorton made this decision. Going 7 years for Shatty would just have been hole in the head, 4 years is a different story. Still there are pros and cons.

We have Nash coming off the books after next season....that gives them a good bit of flexibility.

What the heck is the point of acquiring Shattenkirk in the first place if you're going to trade away your far and away best d-man? I realize the thought process, but it would be unsavory as hell

There is no point.

No team is perfect. For the past few seasons this team's strength has been depth at forward and being able to roll four lines evenly. Now the team's strength is it's top four D.

You're always taking a gamble somewhere. Now the gamble is that one of Miller or Hayes can sort themselves out and become a consistent top six center.

With Girardi, Staal, Boyle and a declining Klein getting plenty of minutes and Yandle stapled to the 3rd pair, you can't make that comparison.

I can't imagine ks getting the Yandle treatment but I wouldn't stake my life on it.

Gorton asked a player to make a hard choice and he did. Who else recently left this amount of money on a table for choice to play for a team he wanted?

BTW Brooks WAS right: Rangers were not willing to go above $30-some millions on a 5 year term. And they didn't.

Any chance Rangers still get a center? If they could get a Stepan replacement then the window would be open again for at least a few more years. Hayes or Miller at 2C will give me nightmares.

The offseason is still young. Gorton said they have some "ongoing things" in regards to their center depth.

Interesting thing how Gorton made a point to say "we see him as a top 4 guy and that he'll get a lot of icetime"

I'm not really an AV bashing guy but I wonder if that's a bit of a shot across the bow in terms of "he's doing to play a lot of minutes here and not be second fiddle to Marc Staal"

I am consistent in my stance.

We sucked last season for the expectations, couldn't get past a bad Ottawa team.

I was done with this one more year, lets pile on another big contract ****.

So many here were begging for this team to rebuild after we lost, and then two months later, they are thrilled we piled on two more big contracts.

No, I am sticking pat. I was not happy with how the season ended, the plan wasn't working, we needed to rebuild. I didn't change my opinion like the wind.

The Rangers blew the Ottawa series, to an extent. But some credit is rightly due to the Sens and it's somewhat insulting to call an Ottawa team that took the eventual SC Champs to double OT in game 7 a bad team.

If Lindy Ruff coming onboard I don't know what could be a louder message to get with the program or else. On the other hand, could it be that AV had the same hands off style with Buke running defense as he had with the players managing the clubhouse? The way Buke left that indicate to me that he was made the fall guy, rightfully so or no. Whatever it is Staal is better be off top 4 minutes or roles.

This is why GMJG has to move Holden, so the only way a Staal/Holden ever exist again will be in AV's fevered dreams.
