Rebuilding on the fly. Its what Gorts said we would do. Replace Stepan with Shattenkirk while adding two top prospects.

This isn't rebuilding on the fly, it's more like when Goku learned how to go Super Saiyan at will without getting all pissed off and ****.

Boom! We're amazing

But they did. Hockey is competitive, they got the job done, we didn't. Don't try to compare us to Pittsburgh.
I think I get what you are saying...in essence, any team that doesn't win the cup needs to rebuild, shed all big contracts, don't sign significant players, hoard draft picks, etc.

Good plan.

Yeah, and Pittsburgh has won two Cups in a row, and they got by Ottawa. I didn't say Ottawa is incapable of giving a contender a series, but if you can't beat Ottawa, its time.

This is all relative. There are not 16 contenders each season. Only a few. This team has been on the outside looking in of that group since we got to the ECF. We've won 7 games the last two playoffs.

The logical thinking is that Gorton axed Stepan and Girardi because he didn't like the contracts he negotiated or helped negotiate for them, now he adds two more big contracts that he negotiated.

Being one of the last 6-7 teams playing does not equal a team that sucks.

You look at a 16mill/4years contract as a big contract? That is not a big contract in todays NHL.

Lets make this quick. Did you want us to improve this year or not?

Rangers are in /zero/ position to tank for a 1st overall while Hank's contract is on the books. They just picked 7th overall and have more youth talent in the org (counting Buch as this) this year than any of the last 3~ years combined.

The Rangers have a need for a 1C, sure, but honestly I don't think the gap between Stepan and Mika will be so gaping over the next couple of years. The Rangers have a very, VERY good top 4 and got rid of one of the worst players in the league getting 15+ mins. They'll contend this season if Hank is in .920+ sv% form.

Who would you have targeted next year? And for how much? Like, who did Gorton just sabatoge our chances of getting thanks to Smith and Shattenkirk. You seem to be arguing that these are bad signings because they don't put us over the hump. Okay. How did this bork them 12 months from now?

I don't like UFA signings to begin with. Its a terrible market. Teams that sign UFA's are pretenders, teams that build a team on their own through the draft and trades are contenders. I would only sign players in the UFA market to fill out the roster, not major players.

The one exception is if a player like Tavares came onto the market. He's a 1C, one of the best players in the league, not like a Shattenkirk or Smith, players who get overrated once in their career because they are the big names on the UFA market. Tavares would've been worth spending the money on, but other than that, I would've stood pat, signed a few bargain players, and tried to rebuild through the draft and trades.

Also Shatty is only 28! When we can start talking about him being over the hill, his contract will already be half over! Amazing signing.

We just added 2 first round picks so there is your rebuilding through the draft. We just traded for a young defensemen in AD. We just signed a defensemen that push comes to shove we can also trade down the road.

The Rangers have more cap issues. The Rangers have $44,424,444 committed for 9 players in 18-19. 9 players. That number will increase with Zibanejad and Fast. $6M-$7M more with 11 players. $50M-$51M in 11 players. Cap goes up by $2M again. $77M. Miller,Hayes,Vesey and Skjei are arbitration eligible.

The Rangers need to fill out the roster this season.

Shattenkirk basically did what Paul Stastny(3/$21M) did by taking less in St.Louis a few years ago.

I've said it a million times already, no.

If it was 7x7 I would be right there with you PB.

It's basically an exact replacement of what Stepan had left. I personally think swapping the two will be more treading water than anything, but it's not an extension of the "can kicks" if you will.

Not a huge shattenkirk fan but this is a no brained imo. That said how many people on this board were saying we had a top defense after signing Yandle?
