You know my feelings about Slats, Fletch. The past moves like these were made to create a core. That core already exists. And Boyle is not going to be asked to be a #1. I think this also is an interesting situation for Staal. He's going to be paired with a true offensive defenseman and maybe Staal is asked to do a little less.

I lived this with you the past 15 years...I'm with you regarding Slats' moves. I do believe, which I think you've state, that it's easier to insert a UFA into today's lineup than it was 15 years ago. He does fit in. He fills a need. The concern is age and how does this affect the rest of the roster as he makes move to stay below the cap while filling holes.

Why Boyle ahead of Strålman?? How can that possibly be reasoned??

Stralman will get a bigger contract and there is a salary cap.

That being said, I'm not a fan of Boyle and would've rather the Rangers stayed away from him. At least its only 2 years.

for that term, I wish we got Ehrhoff, 3 years. Even 1 if he was looking to pump up his value.

Think an offensive defenseman like Ehrhoff pumps up his value in New York? Do you think he pumps it up more than in PITT?

good point. I'm guessing Stralman priced himself out and you know Sather, he's not one to wait so he immediately pounces. I figured Pou was gone from the way Sather talked about him in his post-draft interview. There is also the tampa connection with Boyle and MSL. I am looking forward to see how Staal-Boyle work out.

Its very clear that Erhoff felt that Pitt is closer than the NYR. He wanted to a take a one year deal for below average money, put up better numbers, possibly win a Cup and then go out on the market again next summer when more teams have more money to spend. What would you have Sather do to combat that?

Sign Stralman. Or trade Staal for a young defenseman with upside.

Not be lazy and make the sterotypical Sather signing.

For starters.

The biggest problem I have with this signing is it appears to be just like so many signings that didn't work out. While this kind of signing doesn't have to always fail, in RangerLand it just seems to be the case. Having said that, the positives are the PP improves a bit and at least he is a natural right defender who will go with Staal on a pairing. Downgrade defensively, upgrade offensively, and hopefully in a material way. The biggest negative is the amount of money going out the door means less for elsewhere. Let's see where this goes...

Pretty much how I feel about this too, Fletch.

People don't like the word lazy - fine. But I don't see creativity or upside here. I see only downside. And (negative) history repeating. I hope I'm wrong.

You do understand that 1) Erhoff took less to play with the Pens and 2) Boyle took less to play with us, right?

I've been suspecting for years now that the Pens are doing funny business with what they say their contracts are and pay players under the table. The Pens aren't close to being champions, despite the press they get for being so great. They have serious holes.

Strals just like Poo are going to get LT deals off this year that they just don't deserve. Nobody was even interested in Strals 2 years ago and Poo was very inconsistent in his play. How is Strals going to do without Staal to pair with and Poo was the beneficiary of Brass and Zucc more than the other way around. Do both have talent "Yes" but I think the terms they were looking for are too long where they are not stars.

with the rate at which these signings are happening, you do need to be ready or you're going to miss a lot of chances. I think Sather saw that for a couple hundred K extra he can fill the PP point hole and not be tied up more than two years...of course, the trade-off is age. Not too upset about it. Lundqvist keeps increasing the value of those defensive-type players.

I was dreading a DBoyle signing, but I'm actually OK with this, especially in light of what other D have gotten today. 2 years is good term, and $4.5M isn't that bad. If he can handle 3rd pair minutes and PP time without being a defensive abortion, I can deal with this contract.

Ehrhoff's contract is NOT a comparable. He wants the Niskanen treatment: have 1 big year, then cash in one last, massive contract elsewhere.

While I may have sounded negative, I'm hoping for the best. SBOB points out why something like this would work out in today's lineup, compared to how it was done in 2002, 2003, etc. (I forget the years; getting old!). And I happen to agree. Haven't seen enough of Boyle this past year to give a great opinion on him in particular, and I can't tell you when he loses an extra step. Let's hope he isn't a liability and he can man the PP point.

Would've preferred Stralsie staying but we needed an offensive D-man + PP-specialist more than another shutdown guy, even if it was Stralsie. Betting the money was essentially the same so even though I hate to admit it, it was probably a good move.

Good terms, he fills a need. people lose their ***** about his age. good signing
