The more I think about it the more I can stomach it. I just know at the end of the year Boyle is going to be getting 11 minutes a game and this will turn into 2011-2012 where we were running with 5 defenseman for most nights.

I like it. Only 2 years, very little risk IMO.

You are right.

I wouldn't have minded someone with more future potential (say a Mike Green). But we needed someone for the PP and Boyle is way better than anything else we have...

I know "it could be worse" is a pretty bad excuse, but really, it could be worse.

Why are they in a position to sign a player who doesn't skate that well anymore or defend that well anymore?

Why are they in a position? Lol...hmmmm..What was that series they just played? Was that the Stanley Cup Final? Yup, and did they have a need on the power play? Yup.....lol

How many games did you see Boyle play last year?

What other move would you have made instead?

Lets hear your plan....Just keep in mind this isn't 2004 and not 2014. This team is a contender and brought in a player that will help them win. Bu bu but SoS I hear he's old and slow.....

I've heard our power play is better today after the Richards and Kotalik signings as well. The McCabe trade. Only time the PP was actually improved was when Jagr and company were here.

Boyle addresses a need. And he replaces two guys in the lineup on some level. His 36 points last season would have been better than every Ranger defenseman save McDonagh. Half his goals were on the PP.

It's more than I just hear he's old and slow. He is old and slow.

Ehrhoff. Stralman. Fayne.

I like this a lot. Puck moving defensemen are SUPER important in this system. Boyle will be covered defensively by Staal or McDonagh. I loved what Stralman gave us and I considered myself a big fan but the Stralmanmania was a little over-the-top. He was obviously a little misrepresented by the advanced stats. Dan Boyle still has gas in the tank and the AAV is good.

Bu Bu But Singn this is an "old Ranger" move....

I swear to god some posters act like they have been frozen in carbonite and the Rangers didn't just play in the Stanley Cup Final.

With the crazy money teams spend the Rangers signed a guy to fill a need AND to a make sense contract....

I don't know singin', on paper everything in Rangerland always seems right.

But when I look and see SJ had the #20 PP unit with all that talent upfront I have to question whether he is much of an upgrade. But yeah, anything would have been an upgrade.

I'm just concerned that he'll continue to decline and slow down over the next two years.

I will happily eat crow if he comes here and pots ~40 points next season.

Despite what many would have you believe, this isn't a terrible deal.

Don't mind this move at all. Unless Stralman gets the same type of deal of course. But he won't. I think Edmonton is going to give Stralman a 5 year deal worth 5 million per. Too much. Who would you rather have on the point on the PP? Boyle or Richards? Our PP is already much better.

I'm not saying I love it BN13. I'm saying there is a rationale to this move. You add a shot from the point who is RH to go along LH McDonagh.

One Erhoff went off the board, I'm not sure I see a more logical option outside of breaking a number for Stralman.

I guess my point is: to me things haven't always seem right on paper to me. This move kind of does.

id be ok with around 30 points. stralman had less than 20 so thats still a solid increase. obviously at this point stralman is the better 5 on 5 player. hopefully lesser minutes for boyle keeps him fresher and more productive in the time hes on the ice.

That's right. I mean, how could it not be?

The thing is, playing a PP in the NHL is not digital, it's — not — either you can or you can't. We have for a long time had a shortage of capable PP players at all positions, which has given us a weak link on most units we have iced, and exposed our PP.

BR could play his position, whether good or not. It's not like the coach of the other team pointed a BR as a player that could be exposed on the PP. Hence BR also played a ton in that role since we had no alternatives.

Like I said when BRs BO was being discussed, if we BO him we need to replace him on the PP. And now we have.

DB may not be E Karlsson or Corsby or N Bäckström, but he is no weak link that can be exposed on a PP.

Good deal. 4.5 for 2 years is not bad at all. And for the record, they didn't choose Boyle over Stralman, they made it clear they wanted to keep Stralman, he obviously priced himself out and will probably sign a 5x6 or 5.5x6 somewhere.

You assume these players were actually options for us. Maybe they were never on our radar. Maybe we gave Ehrhoff an offer and he chose Pitt the same way Detroit gave Boyle an offer and he chose us.

But no, that wouldn't help your agenda. I didn't like this signing. After an hour and reading some of the great points that other posters have made, I am okay with it. Don't love it but certainly don't hate it as much. Speculating about players that may have never been options for us is about the most pointless thing one can do.
