They've been after him for years but it's just too late now, he's 38. The offense will be appreciated but not if it's at the expense of poor defensive play. I don't like the move.

4.5 for 38 year old Dan Boyle.

Staal - Boyle

Disaster waiting to happen.

Vigneault wants speed and possession, Sather doesn't give it to him. Bravo slats.

Lazy, uncreative signing.

I remember when Richards left money on the table to sign with the Rangers too. He fits on paper but he looked gassed at the end of the year. This one can go either way, but I doubt he's getting 2nd pairing minutes at the end of the season.

Comparing this signing and the Richards signing is idiotic. The problem with the Richards signing was 9 years and 60 million at age 31. Richards was serviceable with the Rangers and really had a couple decent years and some big playoff goals. Boyle is signed for 2 years and 4.5 per to fill a need. No problem with this signing.

D Boyle signing is ok. Terms and dollars. I thought the Rangers sign Pouliot. I almost threw up when I miss read the Pouliot signing.

The biggest problem I have with this signing is it appears to be just like so many signings that didn't work out. While this kind of signing doesn't have to always fail, in RangerLand it just seems to be the case. Having said that, the positives are the PP improves a bit and at least he is a natural right defender who will go with Staal on a pairing. Downgrade defensively, upgrade offensively, and hopefully in a material way. The biggest negative is the amount of money going out the door means less for elsewhere. Let's see where this goes...

Would rather have signed Stralman for $4.5 per. But if Orpik got 5/27.5 I can't imagine what Stralman is going to get. Yikes.

Why in hell is Sather wasting time on the old boys club. You just boughout Richards, Slats, the 04 Tampa reunion is ruined now.

You know my feelings about Slats, Fletch. The past moves like these were made to create a core. That core already exists. And Boyle is not going to be asked to be a #1. I think this also is an interesting situation for Staal. He's going to be paired with a true offensive defenseman and maybe Staal is asked to do a little less.

Can you people stop bringing up Ehrhoff's contract as a comparison? It's Pejorative Slured. He took less. Anyone with a brain can see that.

Its very clear that Erhoff felt that Pitt is closer than the NYR. He wanted to a take a one year deal for below average money, put up better numbers, possibly win a Cup and then go out on the market again next summer when more teams have more money to spend. What would you have Sather do to combat that?

You do understand that 1) Erhoff took less to play with the Pens and 2) Boyle took less to play with us, right?

Ehrhoff is smart. Go to the Pens with Crosby and Malkin, play on the PP, inflate his numbers, come out of it with a long-term contract greater than $4MM/ year. Rangers ain't getting that same deal. He's not going to drive the PP here, and there he's a passenger. He must have a good agent.
