Confirmed with Link: Rangers sign Cody McLeod to a one year deal

My God, the humanity!!!

McLeod is the 13th forward. Quinn coached him in Colorado so he know him and obviously approved the signing. He's here as the occasional deterrent (anyone looking forward to playing the Islanders this year) and locker room leader. He is by all accounts a great team guy.

This isn't worth losing any sleep over.

They didn’t bring in a player development coach just to have him and the front office overplay a guy who frankly isn’t very good.

Why are you so confident that he will get tons of ice time?
I'm not confident that he will get a ton of TOI, and I don't think I ever said that I was. What I did say was that I was concerned that we now have a guy on the roster who is literally useless, and that any other player would be a better option.

I also said I have concerns that the front office has an apparent fascination with these guys. Can't blame this one on AV. And I'm concerned that the fascination, coupled with the rookie coach, may lead McLeod to get more play than he should.

I believe he'll play very limited minutes when he does play. Still, those limited minutes would be better utilized by different players.

Nothing more to say about it for me.

I don't care about the signing as much as I do about what it says this management values. It doesn't mean much next year...but the following years? Are they gonna keep trying to get useless goons? Ugh.

The move itself isn't the problem for me. It's the overall mindset of the FO. I mean didnt they notice he was beyond terrible here?

I'd like to think even on a rebuilding team hes nothing more than a 13th forward but we've said that before.

 A deterrent, like that Nashville game, when we were getting run all night, but I forgot, he is a great guy, and had friends on the Nashville bench because he played there as well.

Congrats to Buch getting one of his line mates back, he must be pumped.

Would it be such a bad idea to have him to the AHL and play on their 4th line? By all accounts he is a great locker room guy and has a ton of NHL experience. The Wolfpack don't have a guy like him either

Apparently, everyone loves the guy. If he can help our kids with their adjustment to the pro game, he's worth the contract. If he's taking time away from Chytil on the 2nd line, we can begin to bitch about it.

As I said in the other thread--I don't care if we sign a guy who is bad to a one-year deal. But McLeod is bad in the wrong way, in that he has no NHL skills. Some random fourth line plug that sucks but hustles and is a locker room guy would have been fine. A dude who does everything terrible and isn't on the ice to use his one "skill" is completely ****ing worthless.

I would agree if this was a contending team. We are far from it and are clearly rebuilding.

You guys are looking way to much into this signing.

Yeah, it's not like this front office has wasted time and money on acquiring similar guys such as Donald Brashear, Derek Boogaard (RIP), Tanner Glass, and Arron Asham. And that's just touching on guys who were absolute shit hockey players and not getting to the Mike Rupp's who were limited at best.

This front office likes and seeks out these types of players. It's 100% a trend and they've even gone multiple years to get some of these guys. The issue again isn't adding toughness or even that McLeod will be a Ranger this year because ultimately they're not competing. It's that this team is infatuated with this type of player and is completely missing the mark on what kind of toughness is needed to play in today's NHL. Getting in on guys on the forecheck, finishing checks when the puck isn't already 3 seconds past, wearing guys down over time, etc. That's the toughness they should be looking for. Not skating around uselessly in 4 or 5 minutes of time on ice and finding someone to engage in a useless 20 second fight that does nothing but delay the game.

Weren't all of those guys signed during a time where the team was trying to compete? This is a tiny signing of a locker room guy during a time where the team is obviously not trying to compete.

Sure, considering the team has been competing in some form of another since 2005. But based on their track record, why should I expect them to do differently in the offseason of 2019 or 2020?

All the more reason not to sign a turd on skates. They should either sign players that improve the team or sign no one at all, instead making due with the kids that they have and the depth that they have. On a rebuilding club why should even five minutes go to McLeod when it can go to someone else who has a future with the club or someone who we're trying to determine if they have a future?

If the goal is to play the kids and if they think that he is a good influence on them, I fail to see how a one year deal is remotely troublesome for a team not contending.

It's not even that its troublesome to the team. It's troublesome for me. I don't enjoy watching his style of player. It hampers my experience of the game watching him play.

Signing thugs isn't a Ranger problem. It's a league problem. And it will continue. The draft is all the proof you need -- teams still draft the 6'6 lumbering defender who fights over the dynamic forward with speed. Of course, it's (thankfully) trending away from that, but you still have a lot of 60 and 70-somethings running NHL teams who consider what McLeod and Glass bring as a requirement to be competitive and win.

I'm pretty old school when it comes to fighting, but at least have some skill and smarts. When the league finally wakes up and really throws the book at dirtbags, they'll phase out the requirement for enforcers of any kind.

A lot of good points all around, and I DON'T want to overreact, but I'm thoroughly disgusted with this move, and for really one very simple reason.

I DO believe in proportionate and rapid response to provocations, if not "deterrence" per se, and I DO believe a very young team is going to play with more comfort and confidence feeling there are some tough vets who have their back. I'd have been all in on Reaves, and even a Komarov at less insane terms.

But... we already HAD this a**clown to demonstrate what he can contribute to the Rangers in this -- or any other -- role, and in all my years of watching this team he was as consummate a failure at his job as anyone we've had. So... bringing in someone to fill this function? Not necessarily stupid given the youth and inexperience of the roster. Bringing in this zero? What's the definition of insanity again?

"Good in the room"? Seriously, that's all we got? At least they should have tried a NEW useless bum and hoped to catch lightning in a bottle.

Not the end of the world at all. Though I very much doubt he spends much time in HFD. But moronic in its own right, and disappointing, especially given that so little else has been accomplished this offseason in terms of any other useful trades or signings.

Any time McCleod is playing he will neuter an entire line

Lets give our rookies unnecessary obstacles to overcome, then call them busts for not dragging McLeod all over the ice

I mean, sure. I don't really want to see him playing much, but if he's the 13th forward and basically there to help the kids adjust to the NHL? What does it hurt?

If he's playing on the first line come December, let's break out the pitchforks.
