Confirmed with Link: Rangers sign Cody McLeod to a one year deal

Yeah the ***** fit being throwing over a guy who is an extra forward on a rebuilding team is hilarious.
Every year there's this signing (at least it's only one year this time), and every year someone makes the comment about how it's hilarious that the board is freaking out over an inconsequential player. The point is, for many of us, is that it's a perpetuation of this organizational belief that boxers on skates are worth having, or necessary to a successful team (success not necessarily being defined by record, here). I was hoping this would be the off-season where we finally did not add one of the NHL's Top 10 Candidates for CTE, but I was wrong, and I am disappointed.

But thats the thing, it is only a 1 year deal for a guy who isn't going to be making a whole lot of money. This isn't a Brashear, Booegaard (RIP), Rupp or Glass deal.

Again, they had the guy for a little bit and while he sucked, they obviously liked something that he brought to the table (lord knows it wasn't his hockey skills.)

If there is any time where bringing in someone like him makes sense, it's with the position they're in now. I think its a very safe bet to say that they aren't going to be a successful team next year, so throwing him out there doesn't really hurt you in that sense.

But if there is a kid who deserves to play over him, the kid will play. We really have no reason to doubt that.

The only way I can justify this (and by no means am I in love with it, just trying to somewhat justify it) is if they wanted a guy like this on a single year deal, didn't want to overpay or pay much for a guy like this, and are totally fine with him playing in the AHL most of the season as a good organizational depth guy.
Pretty much.

I'm meh on the signing. If he wears a suit most games or plays primarily in HFD, as I expect, it's fine. I'll wait to see if he actually gets any real PT before I get upset about it. (If he does, then I will be.)

It doesn't matter to me that it's only one year. If he's playing, it's a waste of ice time. Do we really have no reason to doubt that a deserving kid won't be stapled to the bench for him? I don't know how we can say that. We don't know what Quinn is going to do with a guy like this. And the fact that management continues to bring these guys in, makes me worry that he'll play.

Even if he's just taking a shift that could be used to demonstrate that Nieves absolutely doesn't belong in the NHL, then that's a waste! There is literally no circumstance where McLeod taking a shift is not a waste. It's either a waste because it could be going to a young player (like Lettieri last season) or to a fringe player like Nieves or Fogarty, or to someone who is also irrelevant but not completely useless.

There's just no need. He literally contributes nothing on the ice. Anyone else, kid, 4A guy, spare part, would be a better person to have out there. That's just how I see it. Every time he skates, we are wasting TOI that could be used on something else.

I just want to let you know that you're doing God's work right now, and I love you.

Because it's a ridiculous assumption to jump to. Cody McLeod is not going to change the way he thinks about coaching, come on. It's more likely that he's eating nachos in a suite for 90% of the season than it is that what you're saying comes to roost.

This FO just booted a bunch of people who were much better players and much more respected. If he isn't one of the best 12 healthy forwards, he won't play.
I would be more inclined to agree with you if I didn't watch Tanner Glass play over a laundry list of players who were all better than him. Here's a list of players Glass was in lineups over in his 3 years as a Ranger:

JT Miller
Jesper Fast
Pavel Buchnevich
Oscar Lindberg
Anthony Duclair
Lee Stempniak
James Sheppard
Marek Hrivik
Emerson Etem
Jarret Stoll
Viktor Stalberg
Boo Nieves
Brandon Pirri

All of them, even the bad ones like Sheppard or Etem, are objectively better than Glass.

Sorry if I don't always believe the coach will always play the superior player.

There have been 2 Rangers that I've hated and been legitimately embarassed, disgusted and almost unable to root for as Rangers. No, it was 3.

Hollweg. Brashear. McLeod.

This guy spent his time on the ice last season literally chasing down people begging for fights....other than that one game in Nashville where they were knocking out guys out of the game and he became a church mouse

I'm f***ing pissed

I just hope Quinn won't play him in a top 9 role. Let's hope he isn't A.V 2.0.

I love this move purely for the overreactions and hot takes.

Me too. This move has turned the usually reasonable into k27 clones.

Yeah and if AV were still here, you’d have a gripe.

He isn’t.

Looks like EDM is not moving Lucic. I do not like this move, however, I understand why it was done and I do support it. As long as he is a 13th forward, I can get behind this. Otherwise, I do not even care about it because this season is going to be the roughest one we have had in a while.

It's funny when people justify it with 'oh good, a tank move'.

Like dressing this dude for 20-30 games and giving him 5-6 minutes a night is going to drive some tank

Nope...20 minutes a night in the top line! Tank commander supreme!

which is worse, McLeod for 1 year of Beagle/Roussel at 4 years $3M AAV? Imagine if we had both!
I'm hoping he is buried.

What makes you think this is an AV problem? Maybe it's a FO problem. At some point we can't continue to pin every issue on Vigneault. And We don't know what Quinn will do, so to make a suggestion either way is premature.
