Good move. Amount is slightly higher than I'd like but the term is just right.

Agree. That said, at least they're giving the money to a known commodity who gives the team something they lack on the blue line.

And I do believe that if he hit the open market in 7/1, he could get more than he did.

The known commodity thing is important. He adjusted to AVs system quicker than any other D acquisition I've seen since AV got here. That includes Klein, who I think held back his first season because he was still acclimating.

Agreed on both points. Defensemen are hard to come by.

Thank you all, I just don't get why others can't see this, instead they are fixated on MAYBE an over payment of 350 thousand :propeller

On the open market he could have made more or added more years, his contract was actually a gift. And thats cool, after all, we did trade two future prospects for his services.

He was a perfect partner for Skjei, makes nice outlet passes (unlike the Girardi/Staal hot Potato move) and provides snarl in front of our goalies. A+ from me!

I think he wants him too, but isn't trying to show his hand. I also think he can live with missing out on Shattenkirk if he gets a 6 year, $7M+ kind of deal.

I think he doesn't want to be used to drive up the price. The Rangers and Shattenkirk have been seemingly linked since before the trade deadlineâ€â€don't be too eager.

I'd rather throw 4 million to smith than to throw 4.5-5 to bonino and i think bonino is a decent player.unless the 12 super high intensity playoff games i saw were a mirage then i know Smith can play playoff hockey.

Like Smith a lot - in the playoffs. If he can show up like he did in the playoffs each year with that type of effort - its worth it.

But in the regular season I was not impressed and didnt want to resign him. Youd like to see the consistency the full year through. With that said, if he's a gamer and really shows up when it count, then so be it. Hes a talented guy with an edge.

Hit is a little high yeah. Not sure how much the cap will go up over the term, hopefully it will temper that commitment a little.

So we gave 4 years and a NTC and nearly 4.5M to a #4 defensemen because he has good advanced stats.

This guy is a dumb player. Too many penalties, doesn't produce any offense, just as bad offensively as Staal, and thats really saying something. Defensively, he's only about average. He's not a shutdown defensemen at all, don't care what the stats say. This guy does not defend at a very high level, an average level, and that might even be generous. This was a player who was scratched for the Wings, they didn't want to pay him what he wanted, but we did. The worst defense in the league wouldn't pay this guy, but we do. #4 defensemen at best.

Gorton continues to make bad decisions. What an awful deal.

You do realize that 4-4.5m is what UFA aged #4 defensemen get paid, right?

This is what Detroit would pay him. I guess a few tough plays in the playoffs gets him nearly an extra million, an extra year and a NTC.

In all fairness thats what they offered him before they dealt him right?
after the playoffs he had he wasn't gonna that or less. its a certainty he was gonna get 4x4 from someone. we porbably "overpaid" by 350k
