Do your own homework, if you can without checking with statgeek.com

The only website that would tell you that this is a good signing is "statgeek.com". Solid attempt, though. Smith is only good at suppressing shot attempts against. He doesn't bring any offense. He suppresses shot attempts.

I did my homework, trust me.

I'd disagree. A solid shot suppressor who Skjei feels comfortable running free with is work an awful lot to me.

Not going to debate you on the fact that Stepan is more important on the ice than Smith is. Not worth either of our time.

I didn't say he's more important, just that you're overestimating the gap between their contributions.

Smith makes it hard for opposing teams to carry the puck in. He makes it easy for Skjei to jump up in the play. He brings a physicality that almost nobody else up and down the lineup does. Those are all very important things to me, especially given this teams current strengths and weaknesses - they're too easy to walk in on and too soft in almost every situation. We've needed an actually effective shot suppressor since Stralman left.

He wasn't getting lower than $4M.

That's the price tag when you're a solid Top 4 blueliner and are the second best UFA defenseman heading into the off-season.

Funny, his career CF/60 is higher than any regular Ranger defenseman last season.

Good, SIGN ME UP. Skjei, McD, and D'Angelo can bring the offense. Smith has offensive skill sets and is a great skater, so he's not a fish out of water joining the rush. But if he can be alright offensively while being an excellent shot suppressor, dude yes. Awesome. All day. Cause I don't know about you, but I'm tired of watching Hank look like the bulls eye at a shooting range in West Virginia the day after 4th of July.

Smith is a very good shot-suppressor. He plays with an edge. Like you said, a lot of Smith's 'shot suppressing' skill comes from making smart reads at the team's blueline.

It doesn't change the fact that this doesn't equate to a $4.35m payday over four years. And it definitely doesn't hold a candle, IMO, to everything that Stepan did on the ice.

The original comparison to Stepan was because of the, to me, hilarious juxtaposition of HF opinion between the two contracts, despite their similarities.

Some form of NTC.
Player will be 30+ upon completion.
Player is slightly overpaid for what they bring.
Risk of output taking a dip due to natural aging curves, and play style.

Yet, the Stepan contract was forced off the team for these reasons, and the Smith contract is a major success? Then, you get to the next level which is considering their on-ice benefits, and it becomes even more laughable... again, to me.

Funny, his career CF/60 is higher than any regular Ranger defenseman last season.

Okay, so? Not sure what the benefit of comparing a career CF60 to other players' single-season CF60 is across two different teams.

As I said in the post you quoted, Smith is a very nice 'fancystat' player, so it was funny to me that Bluenote would use the ever creative 'statgeek.com' joke, which is exactly where you'd go if you wanted to show that this was a good contract.

Even decent defenseman are just really hard to find now.

I can't wait for HF to hate this contract though.

zero touch with reality if you thought he was getting signed for 3.35 mil. thats a joke

I wasn't for signing him, and I don't believe in signing players to whatever amount it takes to sign them. That's how we got stuck with Staal and Girardi and Redden.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I wasn't really champing at the bit to lose Step personally. I understand why they lost him and I don't hate the idea though I'm not super happy about DeAngelo being the return for reasons that apparently can't be discussed. I also don't think Smith's deal is a major success. I think it's a fair deal that might be worrisome toward the very end, and I think Step's was the same, with perhaps a higher chance of being problematic given his foot speed issues.

Fish, Step trade wasn't just because of his contract, think you need to get over that.

Plus his position with the team and his role with the team for the last how many years has absolutely nothing in comparison with Smith a defenseman that's been with the team less than half a year.

I think you and I are on the same page, for the most part.
