Smith is a very good shot-suppressor. He plays with an edge. Like you said, a lot of Smith's 'shot suppressing' skill comes from making smart reads at the team's blueline.
It doesn't change the fact that this doesn't equate to a $4.35m payday over four years. And it definitely doesn't hold a candle, IMO, to everything that Stepan did on the ice.
The original comparison to Stepan was because of the, to me, hilarious juxtaposition of HF opinion between the two contracts, despite their similarities.
Some form of NTC.
Player will be 30+ upon completion.
Player is slightly overpaid for what they bring.
Risk of output taking a dip due to natural aging curves, and play style.
Yet, the Stepan contract was forced off the team for these reasons, and the Smith contract is a major success? Then, you get to the next level which is considering their on-ice benefits, and it becomes even more laughable... again, to me.
Okay, so? Not sure what the benefit of comparing a career CF60 to other players' single-season CF60 is across two different teams.
As I said in the post you quoted, Smith is a very nice 'fancystat' player, so it was funny to me that Bluenote would use the ever creative 'statgeek.com' joke, which is exactly where you'd go if you wanted to show that this was a good contract.
