i dunno..the defensive is clearly better..but losing Lindberg and Stepan is rough....gotta add a legit top line guy imho...or at least another legit forward...you can live with Zib, Hayes, Miller and...whoever...but you need some depth around them...you gotta run 4 scoring lines...thats the only way to combat such a weak center group.

Get Marleau or Thornton cheap or try for Bonino or Hanzal.

If we sign Shattenkirk our defense goes from bottom 5 top top 5 with the addition of him and Smith. Even if you can't fully replace Stepan, replacing Girardi with Shatt is HUGE.

If he and Skjei continue what they did in the playoffs for the next 4 years I don't think anyone will gripe too long about this.

Except Smith was terrible in game 6 vs Ottawa, when we needed him the most.

Oh well, this is to be expected when you trade away so many draft picks, or use them wrecklessly like in 2010, while signing guys who have been taking pucks off their heads to long term deals with no trade clauses.

you will never convince me a Defense with the Marc Staal of the past 2 years on it is a top 5 defense...not unless he's your #7 defenseman..and let's be real...did you see the playoffs? he got the highest of the high leverage situational minutes.

Maybe a slight overpayment, but I'm not gonna get worked up over 350k.

If Smith can stay healthy and play how he did in the playoffs he will be well worth it.

Lmao, he'll be 30 in 2 years (plus 32 when his deal is up, who wants to pay him then?!?!) and his NTC kicks in right now. We can't have that, need to move him for picks.

 I love HF, man, I really do.

Everything people were worried about with Stepan is legitimately brushed away for Smith and this is a 'great signing'

its an absolute TERRIFIC top 4.

But a bottom pair of Holden and Staal...or Deangelo and Staal...or literally anyone and Staal...is just...so...so....bad.

Staal is clearly the weak link. Whoever is paired with him will get dragged down by his lack of speed and skill.

It's a good signing. Smith is a different player than anyone on the D corps now or even any of the younger prospects. The D needs a little bit of edge, especially with G gone and Klein potentially out as well.

Two key differences:

Smith - showed up in the playoffs and can skate

Stepan - **** the bed in the playoffs and can't skate

I won't disagree on any of your points... but one game vs. how many that they looked easily like 2 of our Top-3 D men?

Just cap space, of which we have plenty of. We gave up some assets to get him, if that was for a rental it would've been much worse.

At least he has some grit also.
