Love the term. I am fine with paying a little more per year instead of giving him 5, 6, 7 years. Doesn't this deal end when he is still only 31 or 32 years old?

Paying someone a premium for their 28, 29, 30, 31 year old years I am good with. Its the 33, 34, 35, 36 years that worry me.

I've come to realize that Shatty isn't the right signing for us now. I think that Smith does start up top with Mc and that Bearglands, Deangelo, Holden, Pionk battle for other 2 slots

If we don't sign Shattenkirk then the Stepan trade makes no sense. We could have a very good defense next year if we sign Shatt. Those other guys aren't even locks to make the team, let alone step into a top 4 role. I'd feel just as uncomfortable as last season if this is the defense we decide to go with and we lost our 1c.

It's all about need. It's not a king's ransom. It's not super long-term. I'm happy. Even for the fact that he's not a natural righty.

Maybe a bit overpaid, but nothing disastrous. We're talking maybe $250k. Not that big of a deal in the long-run.

The deal is only 4 years, which is nice. He's still fairly young at 28 now. Don't see a problem here.

What he brings is part of what this team needs--good defense and some snarl. He can play all over the top-6. He had good chemistry with Skjei to boot. It gives us options.

McDonagh - Smith
Skjei - Holden/Bereglazov/Pionk
Staal - DeAngelo

Really, that top-6 could work and Staal's contract is the only ugly one. I wonder if this means that the organization is committing to DeAngelo as our answer to the PMD problem.

I hope this doesn't mean we're standing pat, though. We could still use help on the right side.

EDIT: Why an NTC? I'd offer an NTC if he gave us a deal, otherwise...

Nice deal. Was streaming an NHL talk show this morning and the guy said to expect smith and shattenkirk on broadway.

Fine with this.

Although I can't help but chuckle at a thread where, once again, many people have no handle on the value of UFAs.

McD - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo

So much better then what we had last year. I really think this means the Rangers are getting Shattenkirk just praying the term and $ aren't absolutely terrible.

Explain why you think that. Curious.

Just a hunch. If the reason not to sign Shattenkirk (outside of money) was to let the kids play, then how does signing Smith accomplish this? Especially with a contract like this, not that I oppose it. :dunno: Plus, Mirtle said he sees him signing here as well. But, like I said, Gorton has me all over the place, but we'll see.

Please excuse me while I fantasize about our defense next season if we sign Shatty
McD-Shatty
Skjei-Bereglazov
Smith-DeAngelo
Staal

McD - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo

if the Rangers sign Shattenkirk id have to believe 100% that Staal, Holden, and Klein are gone. I just don't see any way around it.

They didnt bring in DeAngelo, Pionk, Bereglazov, etc to play in the minors...2 of those guys are going to be on the Roster...

if you want to keep Holden..im fine with that..he can rotate in and out with a kid. (he wont..cause...AV)..

but to have Staal in that lineup changes nothing. Because I can guarantee you 100% that he will play more minutes than Skjei..I can guarantee you 100% that he will drag down whoever is stuck with him, etc.

Holden has gotten so much crap on this board...some of it deserved...most of it not..because of just how atrocious Marc Staal is.

Nice deal. Was streaming an NHL talk show this morning and the guy said to expect smith and shattenkirk on broadway.

I can't get my head around the whole trading stepan and getting shattenkirk move.
IDK if they are related or not.

Trading stepan gets you:
-a YOUNG Right Handed Dman Prospect/Player
-a 7OA Pick
-move out $6.5 million in Cap
-was primarily done because the FO saw his game was diminishing as he aged despite him being in his mid to late 20's

Signing Shattenkirk gets you:
- a middle pair Right handed DMan
- a "PowerPlay quarterback" (no matter how much this term gets thrown around i dont believe it is as important as people say, I believe PP is more about team than one player running the show)
- move in around $6.5 to $7 mill in cap space
- sign an older player to a longer term deal, potentially worth more money

Sign Shattenkirk and a middle 6 center and this team is better than last years.

i dunno..the defensive is clearly better..but losing Lindberg and Stepan is rough....gotta add a legit top line guy imho...or at least another legit forward...you can live with Zib, Hayes, Miller and...whoever...but you need some depth around them...you gotta run 4 scoring lines...thats the only way to combat such a weak center group.
