Really hope we resign him, he was incredible in the playoffs. If we can sign him and Shatty (should be able to now with the cap space we have) and somehow get rid of Staal...

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Bereglazov - DeAngelo

We go from one of the worst defensive cores in the league to one of the better ones

I definitely agree with your assessment.

im really leaning more and more towards what RB has been pumping. take a step back...trade some pieces, and reload with kids.

Trade Nash next. Dump Staal...go with kids.

Pretty sure it's been said Staal won't waive . Maybe firvhis Bros teams but I doubt anyone else

where? i dont recall reading that anywhere..i do recall reading that we havent asked...

Could be assumed but I just can't see a team taking him even at 50 off sadly . He's not a horrific 3rd pair but will they play him there is the question

Yeah it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me either.

Torches and pitchforks were out for Stepan because of a bad playoffs, but the guy who has never had a good one is untouchable.

Lack of speed, inconsistency, and AAV + term had much to do with Stepan being dealt.

Zuuc has adequate speed for the league, is more useful more often to his teammates than Stepan was (IMO), and makes 69% of what Stepan makes...with much less term remaining.

One thing that Stepan did bring in a better way than Zuuc, and I think most will disagree with me (but I'll say it anyway), is locker-room presence. Zuuc is appreciated and leads by example on & off the ice, but I've always found him a bit understated vocally. Stepan, on the other hand, was a hell of a guy in the locker room. Very social, friendly, and funny. Always seemed to bring guys together...make them interact with each other. Just a great personality.

Other than the personality, there isn't much I'll miss about Stepan.

I mean, he *just* had a good playoffs.

But he's not Malkin.

That is what they should be doing imo, but that does not necessarily preclude a Smith re-signing, if the contract is decent and does not have clauses which are that restrictive, it's an asset that is movable towards getting younger or more talented at some other future point.

All the same I still think this trade was always going to lead the Rangers to no mans land, Smith may not be good enough for this next contract and they gave up futures to put themselves in that position.

In a way it's similar to Girardi, they had to think they were buying him out, yet they still had to play him in nearly every single game he could possibly play in, that is not really forwards looking thinking as now they are even more forced to sign Smith or someone similar.

They did not develop any RD, so they could play G, just to buy him out.

They played Smith, just so they either sign him or lose those assets used on him for nothing.

All because I guess Clendening was not worth trying to develop even as a stop gap RD although not much of his on ice game showed anything to make that assumption.

Trading everyone else who isn't a kid is a recipe for disaster. These players need good pros to play with and learn from. These kids aren't mcdavids and Matthews, they're solid young players who will not carry a team to anything like success themselves.

He didn't, but okay.

He had 2 good games mixed in with a bunch of mediocre games and a few bad ones. But he tries hard...

Step has bad foot speed when the league is getting faster every year, was on the verge of an NTC kicking in, and hasn't carried much of the regular season scoring load with the consistency Zucc has.

Meh. He scored a point in 44 games while Step scored a point in 40 games. they each had 10 multi point games.

People are willing to crucify Stepan because he doesn't put up enough points in the play offs (0.51 PPG) yet say Zuccarello is great (0.52 PPG)

Not crazy about the AAV, but fine with it if this is our one big signing of the summer. RFA's not withstanding. Should be a solid veteran presence for the youth movement!
