Did they re-sign Smith yet?![]()
I think it might be in the Team's interest NOT to re-sign / extend until after the expansion draft, no?

I think moreso in Smith's interest. If Smith is used to shield Fast/Lindberg from Vegas, I don't think the Rangers would be too broken up about it.I think it might be in the Team's interest NOT to re-sign / extend until after the expansion draft, no?

Yep. My point was that he would be motivated to wait than the Rangers.Well, from his standpoint he might not want to end up in Vegas. And I really don't know the hockey calendar for when the draft is in relation to free agency, but if FA's cannot sign until after the expansion draft, Brendan doesn't want to play in Vegas, and he can't be guaranteed protection, it might be in his interest to also wait, and wait until the dust settles in Vegas, just as there is no reason for the Rangers to risk losing him.
He has said he wants to win, and I am sure that doesn't mean being on an expansion team right after your UFA window...
Brendan Smith has changed the dynamic of this team and defense especially. He gave this team some balls while being able to play hockey. Size and grit. Can play the left and right side.
He shouldnt be the one used to "shield" Fast/Lindberg.
He needs to be re-signed

But, at the moment, he doesn't have to be protected. Unless you can get either Staal or Girardi to waive their respective NMCs, they have to be protected. As long as Smith remains a UFA, he's available to be signed on July 1. Vegas could pick him, but, unless they intend to send him to a team that he will sign a deal with before July 1, there's little risk leaving him unprotected. If you sign him and cannot get Staal or Girardi to waive, you can't protect him.
Brandon Prust is rigg up there along with Sean Avery. I see a common theme of guys who can play and also add some bite
I'm fairly certain that he has been told (or will be) that we want to resign him and that we'd be making it worth his while. Wink wink
That's what I would also think had happened. He's with a perennial playoff contender, with two of his former college teammates in an organization known to treat it's players very well. Probably not a hard sell to keep him here.
Someone more familiar might be able to correct me, but it isn't circumvention when hes a UFA if we said "Hey, we just can't protect you in the ED... we will sign you right after" and maybe terms are already agreed to at that time.

Nashville claimed Richter back when you got compensation for losing free agents. So the Nashville got a 2nd round pick for the Rangers stealing their player away from them.No. How can it be? It's part of the negotiations. Right now the NYR have exclusivity in resigning him, and are not breaking any rules by stating, "We cannot protect you if we resign you now."
Besides, didn't the Rangers take advantage of this situation once before with Richter?

Yeah, and Leetch was traded to Edmonton for Markkanen. The pick was just added to the second round, Rangers didn't have to give up anything. I think they traded Richter to Calgary once too.Didn't the same thing happen with Messier?
Traded his rights to San Jose for a 4th, then we signed him again. Not sure if we had to give them a pick back for compensation.

They got the free pick. We got whatever they gave us. NHL would give compensatory picks to teams when they lost players as free agents. I think you had to be under a certain payroll threshold. Either way, it made sense to trade the rights to players you intended to re-sign before June 30.Wasn't there some kinda weird loophole where they get compensation from losing him and in the end we get a free pick for nothing...
