They really have to keep Smith. I can't really imagine not having him. He is quite consistent in his level of play game after game.

Really love the guy. Hoping they can afford to keep him.
He has really impressed and stepped up his game in the playoffs. Gorton is going to have his work cut out for him in figuring out how to keep him and how much to pay him. I still would not want to pay him $5m. $4 x 4 given how he is playing, yes. And then a forward needs to be traded to create cap room.

No, Klein needs to be moved to create space. Klein's $2.9 million
Moved out for a pick is plenty of space to re-sign Smith.

id give him 6 years at 3.5 per. or like 3.75 per. Give term over dollars.
He is 28. Good chance you are going to hate the last couple of years. Maybe not, but I would stay away from a long-long term commitment. 4 years is about as long as I would do.

34 would be his final year. It could be a rough year, or not. Either way I am prioritizing cap hit over term right now...too many UFAs coming up that they need to sign.

I agree.

If I told you in 2011 that Ryan Callahan would be long gone in 2017, you'd laugh in my face.

You don't know the situation six years down the line. Live for the moment.

I think people are going a little overboard. The guy has looked good here in NY, no doubt. That is after he has struggled to really gain a foothold on the top-4 spot in Detroit for quite some time. He doesn't put up many points at all.

In saying that, he skates well, plays a nice physical game, plays both sides of the ice and makes an ice outlet pass. There will be teams interested, no doubt. However the cap isn't projected to increase significantly.

I'd probably offer something in the neighborhood of 4 years at $3.25.

In the same way players aren't horrrible when they have a bad stretch, Smith isn't a top-pairing guy just out of the blue. He's a nice 4 who doesn't really provide a ton of points but does move the puck efficiently out of his own zone.

This is the same reason I was hoping the Rangers would sign him this offseason before they traded for him. He is a nice piece.

Players gel differently in different player pools. Cannot deny he has looked good. No superstar, but as for now absolutely worth keeping for the right price

I can't imagine the Rangers moving Staal or Girardi. Just too difficult. Likewise, they won't be able to afford Shattenkirk. But I think they will keep Smith. He has certainly aced him s audition.

Sign Smith pronto and then he just may bring the bargaining power TOWARDS the Rangers, in regards to Shatty. There will be other alternatives now, AND it's already publicly known he wants to come here.....Everything points towards a very good hometown discount. Do NOT give in and hurt our cap space......It will bite us once again. Play hardball with him.....If he wants us.....Take freaking less! How did MASK get EXACTLY what he wanted like a little child?

When will this organization ever learn? Yeah, somehow out with a Marc or Dan and then in with yet ANOTHER long term, high priced defenseman? Honestly, I like Shatty, but not that much. There simply has to be another RH defenseman that can do similar to Shatty at half the price.

Both have been the subject or buyout rumors from the organization's mouthpiece, Larry Brooks. One of them will likely be bought out, and it would appear that Staal is the one trending in that direction.

Girardi, OTOH, could be okay going forward if he gets his ice time properly managed and gets quality rest along the way. He could conceivably make a good mentor for Ryan Graves if Graves wins a spot next year. And, who knows, given his performance in the first round of the playoffs, it's possible he opened the eyes of GMs around who might still value his game. His contract is still a blight on the Rangers' cap space, but, with Skjei on an ELC, and perhaps one of Graves or Bereglazov in the lineup, it can be offset.

The majority of Detroit fans on HF seemed to dislike this guy. How? Why? Wut?

It's like anything on HF, who is offering that opinion?

If you look at the main boards here, I can ask a daffodil it's opinion about a player and get a better answer than many of the posters there.

This is true, however, to be fair, a good chunk of those same posters said that he dramatically raises his play in the postseason and was often their best d-man in the playoffs.

Expectations were off the charts and they (including the organization) wanted him to be something he wasn't. NYR fans didn't know what to expect and were pleasantly surprised.

(Edit) And, FWIW, I think winning a round or two will be the difference and he'll end up signing here. Wait and see.

He's been so good defensively. I just wish he provided a bit more offensively, especially if we are going to sign him instead of Shattenkirk.

I'm for bringing in as many members of the 2010 Wisconsin team's top four as possible. Smith's a must keep.
