Skjei 's game has elevated with Smith here as such we might not want Shattenkirk and a long term tie up of Cap dollars . I think Skjei might even be better next season .
I agree on not wanting to tie up cap dollars on Shattenkirk. The overall defense sill still need to be upgraded.

Yes, but I rather trade for Trouba (who has more years left in the tank) than Shattenkirk who wants his big pay day. It's his first time hitting UFA. Yandle tested the market, I would understand if Shattenkirk does that as well.

all that indicates is that we should be buying out Staal. We don't need a $5.7M 3rd pairing defenseman when we have Skjei and McDonagh ahead of him

The only way you're getting Trouba is if you trade McDonagh... I'm actually open to that move, but it's what it'll take to get it done.

Skjei, Trouba, Smith to build around is nice, and rather young. McDonagh needs a contract in 2 years when he hits 30 years old. Move on from him now and get Trouba, that's 4 additional years of youth. THEN you Sign Shattenkirk for $6M * 5 Years.

Nobody is off limits in my book. If the return is right, make the trade.

I feel the same. The core still needs a shakeup, the expired guys need to be moved out for the new class.

If management is not confident that Skjei can take top pairing minutes, they would still have Smith to pair with Trouba on the top pairing, which makes Smith the perfect stop gap for Skjei to grow into those top pairing minutes by the beginning of the 2018-19 season. You are then essentially replacing the $4.7M that is on McD's contract and placing it into Trouba instead. Take from a position of strength to address a position of weakness.

Get rid of Staal by any means necessary and sign Bereglazov, who is supposedly NHL ready. Resign Clendening and give him a fair shot at the #6 spot this season. Burn it into AV's head (assuming he isn't fired) that Clendo is exactly what he's looking for to run his system.

There is your defensive corps overhaul.

Sign a reclamation project as the 7th dman.

For the most part, I agree. However, then management needs to decide what they are building for. Now or future. Either way, moves need to be made that give cap room. Then you can decide who you want to try to deal.

I will say that there are some players that I would NOT want to include in a trade unless the return just simply knocks the socks off.

Clendeing has looked fine in small doses, but there is no evidence that he is an everyday NHL player. And being supposedly ready is not quite the same as being ready.

And to get this done, you need to find over $20m. Where is that coming from?

How $20 million?

The ways to do that are outlined in the Roster building thread.

Klein is worth a 4th rounder -- $2.9M Salary
Holden is worth a 4th rounder -- $1.65M Salary
Total of $4.55M freed up

McDonagh is currently at $4.7M
Trade him for Trouba--$2.8M cap hit for next season
Total of $1.9M freed up

Then buy out either one of Girardi or Staal
Total of $2.5M cap relief (using the conservative numbers here. Girardi buyout actually years $3.5M this season)

Move Nash at 50% for futures and prospects
Total of $3.9M freed up

Smith gets the $4.55M freed up from Holden and klein
Shattenkirk gets the $3.9M from the Nash trade and most of the Girardi buyout savings

The following season Nash's contract drops off. You give that to Trouba. There's his $7M that he wants

I would say Staal and Girardi both need to be bought out. They aren't worth the costs

Gorton could not find such a return for Nash in the offseason. The rumors were that the returns were pennies on the dollar.

Just to make sure that we are on the same page here, his yearly salary will be $3.9? Try doubling that. He is not going to get less than Trouba.

.
The math does not take into consideration resigning some of the forwards who will be coming up.

That is going to be around $6m in dead cap space.

Nash had yet another good post season thus far

No, what I said was if you take the $3.9M from a Nash trade +
the $3.5M from a Girardi trade that equals Shattenkirks salary this year. Subtract the Girardi buyout savings to $2.5M in the next two years, but then all of nash's contract drops off

I am aware. There are other roster moves that can allow for that to happen. Stepan would have to go, McDonagh can be traded before he hits 30 years old, Zucc can be traded or his contract will simply expire. The money can be found.
I am well aware that there are other cap implications like Vesey, Miller, Zib,
Skjei, etc...

That is going to be around $6m in dead cap space.

It can also be seen as a $6M savings because the $11.2M number has now been shrunk. I agree, a 50% retained trade makes more sense, but if that option isn't available you have to realistically consider what can actually be done with these guys

He absolutely needs to be re-signed. No questions asked. Seriously do anything you can to get rid of 2 of Holden, Girardi and Staal.

hes proving that this team needs what he brings. physical play with dependable defense and the ability to log a ton of minutes

hes earning a nice contract.

give me shattenkirk over the summer please.

27/42
76/shatty

staal and holden both gone

is something to build around

Shatty better take a discount for us, or that's a lot of money on defense. Bottom pair has to be under 3 million. So we need Girardi to GTFO also.

I'd keep 76/42 together as well...they are rock solid together.

i suspect a big D turnover this summer

there will be 2 open spots come fall for sure.

atleast one of girardi, klein, staal holden will be kept unfortunately.

if they do sign shatty and the top 4 is set that way, then i see the possibility of keeping girardi and making room for graves and then having kampfer as the 7th.

not a top 5 defense but pretty darn good.

Guy is exactly what this team needs in many facets. His skating ability, physical play and strong defense fits this style really well. You can tell he's comfortable.

I also love that he grabbed Shaw out of the pack in the scrum and took it to him. Been a while since this team had a player who could play the game AND do a bit of that.

Said it and will say it again. Would have playoff Brendan Smith over Yandle or even Shattenkirk. Yes maybe Shattenkirk would maybe help the pp (But then again the way this pp performs who knows. its a freakin curse lol)).
How many times was Yandle our best d man game in and game out and a ***** to play against? Not hating on Yandle cause he was good here in NY but this is a type of defenseman we have been sorely missing.

Love Smith! He's been an absolute beast this post season.
Hes got the spunk.

The guys who are trading McD away in this thread are bonkers....
