Smith, what a warrior - with puck skills, can skate, clears the crease and can throw a hit. What's not to like? That he makes bonheaded plays and takes a stupid penalty once and then? I can live with that, we ain't exactly spoiled at the backend at this point. We have a bunch of defensemen who makes boneheaded mistakes all the time and they're not skilled, can't skate well at all, don't hit that much and don't clear the crease. And they make around $5.5m a year.

If management don't make room for him, well, just another day at the office. Drop the good defensemen and keep the garbage.

The guy is a real nice piece for this team. He's not a savior piece but he is for sure an improvement for this team. His size, strength, skating, puck skills and added edge that he provides is a real nice addition. On top of that the guy can play either side and is comfortable doing so. Gorton should make him a priority.

For the record 3.5x3 is the rumored contract Smith rejected from Detroit. After these playoffs, pretty sure you're not signing him for under 4, don't care how many years you add.

Extend the years if needed. 5 years takes him to 33. 3.5-4 million. The guy doesn't score enough to get a larger deal in the offseason. He knows he fits in well here in NY. Stralman was a more proven similar commodity before he left the Rangers. He will get less than him.

Either way he should be kept.

Detroit sucked and has a one way ticket to the basement punched for the next few years

I'm pretty sure the buzz was they were close on a contract, but the Wings got a trade offer they liked so they went that route. I don't believe Smith rejected that contract.

He's definitely a 5 or 6.....

Hahah yeah right, he's been great. I am perfectly fine with McD, Skjei and Smith getting double shifted as much as possible. AV as usual didn't play Skjei enough but I will take Smith being on the ice more. At least the dunce in charge got it 1/2 right.

not even kidding...i think Game 3 plays out differently if smith is with Skjei.

those 2 have been AWESOME together.

I agree man. I've said the same thing now since it was obvious from game 2 on that they are our best pairing right now. I know Mcd and G have to shut down the Habs firsr line. Just hoping AV keeps playing him 20 plus minutes. Led team in on ice time tonight.

Tossing away another decent to good defenseman in favor of keeping Staal and Girardi will just be too much. Can't deal with this team choosing those two over Stralman, Yandle, and possibly Smith at this point, especially with the assets given to acquire the last two.

Do something to fix the blueline for gods sake

A 5 year deal keeps him until 33. I am a little leery of that to be honest. 4 @ $16m? Based on what he is doing in the playoffs, I would do that. 4 @ $14m? In a NY minute. As things stand, I do not believe that they can afford him at $5m per.

Without moving other pieces, they can't afford him @ 4M/yr either.

Fast/Lindberg/Zibby all need contracts and we have 9.2M in cap space. Not enough. Gotta move/buyout Staal and maybe find Nash a new home.

Any move which is just based on strictly buyouts (Girardi and/or Staal) carry considerable dead cap space hits. So something else needs to be moved to accommodate. So maybe the answer is both? But then the issue becomes that even if you do trade, they cannot afford to take back salary.

This, for the most part they're both putrid.
Unfortunately, their exit is in question or at least expensive. Barring a trade where another bad contract is not coming back, I am not sure how they are exiting other than buyouts. And those carry considerable cap hits.
