Schultz and Gardiner are the only others I would want from that team, honestly.

Err... those are the only members of that top four we don't have. Or was McBain ahead of some of them on the depth chart? I forgot he existed. It appears he went pro before that season though. Anyway, I meant I want the whole McDonagh, Smith, Schultz, and Gardiner group.

I'm for bringing in as many members of the 2010 Wisconsin team's top four as possible. Smith's a must keep.

Yes. I know. I just had a look at the rest of that team, and it is not that impressive. The forwards (Geoffrion, Mitchell etc) just aren't really worth it haha

Schultz & Gardiner took huge steps this year.

Would love to have them both + Skjei + Shatts.

Seems like the Perfect Ranger Defense.

The majority of Detroit fans on HF seemed to dislike this guy. How? Why? Wut?

Detroit fan here. Smith fan as well. For perspective:

Expectations of Smith were as haohmaru pointed out; Completely absurd. We wanted/needed the second coming of Lidstrom. Detroit fans were notoriously spoiled by #5. Could never accept Smith for what he was. A riverboat gambler with snarl. He's a smooth skating puck mover who's had his offence neutered by Detroit. His play always seems to elevate or lower based on his depth position. When he played with Kronwall? He looked like he could be/was a #2 defenseman. The playoffs are where he shines as a lot of other posters pointed out. Detroit fans would harp on every single mistake he made because he wasn't perfect like #5.

Having #27 and #21 from his UoW days obviously helped his transition a lot after the trade. It's weird coming here and reading not only your GD and PG threads but this thread and seeing the exact opposite of Detroit's opinions of him. It's great to see him and Skjei pairing great.

Thanks for the analysis. Seems like he was given a pretty short leash from fans.

If the rest of that were to play out I'd rather have a defensive stud like Tanev or Manson over Shattenkirk.

Smith was the 2nd or 3rd best player in this series for me.

Brendan Smith was a huge acquisition for this team. He has stabilized the entire defense. Probably a smarter deadline deal then getting Shatty. Our entire team defense is better.

I just can't get over this:

2009-10 with Wisconsin:
Brendan Smith: 42 GP, 15 G, 37 A, 52 Pts
Ryan McDonagh: 43 GP, 4 G, 14 A, 18 Pts

2016-17 in NHL:
Brendan Smith: 51 GP, 3 G, 6 A, 9 Pts
Ryan McDonagh: 77 GP, 6 G, 36 A, 42 Pts

Who knows if he would be the guy to put us over the top. Maybe, maybe not. I sure wouldn't be happy about us going 6 years without a 1st round pick though.

I was 50-50 on going for Shatty as well (on top of getting Smith). I would have probably done it since this draft is supposed to pretty damn weak, but I also understand why they didn't.

That being said, I think if we see a Pens-Rangers ECF, or even a Caps-Rangers one, that we'll wish we had traded for Shatty

And it would have been 5 years without a 1st round pick, not 6.

Gardiner definitely seems to have reached that higher level. He took longer to get there than many would have thought but watching him this season he is much better defensively. It was always apparent how much raw skill he had, especially skating.

I was assuming we might have had to trade 2 1st rounders for him, thus the 6 years total.

I'm more than happy with the acquisition of Smith.....more so after every playoff game, he really seems to stabilize the D.

that truly is unbelievable, a lot has to do with how smith was handled in Detroit

Smith us UFA after this season, according to Brooks. I hope they sign him any way they can. This guy is a keeper.

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith
Schultz-Gardiner

Miller for Gardiner
Hayes for Schultz

Not the price I'd pay for them but yeah, that is what I was thinking of. Would be filthy fast and annoying to play against. A constant 5 man attack.

If the rest of that were to play out I'd rather have a defensive stud like Tanev or Manson over Shattenkirk.

Yeah, he's re-identification player imo. Has toughness, can skate, and competes. That's a player you want on the team.

He reminds me of Dubi in terms of his character.

He should re-sign here. He'll be appreciated for what he is here.

With Henrik in net, you want to compete for the cup every year. This is a player that re-opens the window.

Gardiner definitely seems to have reached that higher level. He took longer to get there than many would have thought but watching him this season he is much better defensively. It was always apparent how much raw skill he had, especially skating.

Babs.

Added Skill up front.

Suits his game. He's another one that can flat out fly but never defended with this body.

Since the Leafs went full tempo, he began defending with his legs.

A big reason why they made the playoffs imo.

Schultz took a bigger step imo.

Sullivan smacked the sissy right out of him.

During The Lockout III, I watched a lot of AHL hockey. This guy was unreal... absolutely dominant.

It wasn't until the 2nd round last year that Jultz played with some fire and didn't wuss away from contact. PIT made a mistake not giving him a multi-year deal.

He's the perfect arbitration candidate imo. He is going to ruin PIT's cap this summer unless he wants to play nice nice.
