I'm really salty about the NTC. Hopefully it is a really limited one. I really really hate NTC and if there is another expansion, it will seriously bite us in the ass. Especially if we can't shed Staal. We'll but stuck protecting McD (unless he's a UFA by then and doesn't resign), Staal, and Smith instead of Skjei or say we sign Shattenkirk, what then? Burn all the NTCs!

Solid signing-
Gives us some grit on the back end and he's still fairly young.
Now let's leave D alone (unless of course 86ing 18) and let kids have a shot!

No trade is not a no move. You can expose players with no trades.

Mike Babcock and Ken Holland allowing Smith to play 300+ games for their team should equal Hall of Fame defenseman in HFNYRville

Who gives a **** what Detroit would do?

When you consider farm system, current on ice product, and management and coaching staff, they're the worst organization in the league right now.

It tells me Smith is good if that joke of a team didn't want him.

Compared to contracts like those of Andrew MacDonald and Brooks Orpik, this deal is a bargain.

He's not overpaid. Market value. Maybe even a little less.

You feel the same way about the Staal contract and the previous Girardi contract?

I always say it. The UFA market is terrible. Don't venture into it for non-difference makers. You sign your players that you want to keep early for non-UFA prices.

Hopefully he pulled a Matt Holliday and he can block a trade only to Detroit.

Played 51 and 63 games in last 2 seasons and gets a $1m per year raise for the next 4 years.
NHL contracts are so weird...

When did we ruin our salary cap?

Also, there are only 4 proven NHL D on the roster. This team isn't blowing it all up.

I'm sure you love the Staal contract. The Hank contract is great as well, right? And now we also have dead money on the cap because the current GM didn't like the contract that he helped his old boss negotiate when he was AGM. And lets not forget we are missing a top 6 center because Gorton didn't like the NTC HE NEGOTIATED into the contract of the player he just traded.

We don't need proven NHL D. We are a proven mediocre team with many problems. Don't force contention, its not there. This team doesn't learn.

Depending on whether you are talking about this team that was constructed or our teams from the past few years, you either need to google the definition of "proven" or "mediocre".

The Staal contract is not comparable in any way. He's getting paid as a #3 defenseman while giving us 4/5 type of play (and I have a higher opinion of his play than many here). He also has a full NMC and was signed for 6 years.

Smith is getting paid as a #4 to be a #4, has a limited NTC and the term is 4 years.

Lundqvist's contract is fine and your understanding of why Stepan got traded is pretty limited.

We've won 1 round over the last two years. This team goes all in every year, and now we struggle to win 1 round in the playoffs.

So why did Stepan get traded? McKenzie said it was due to the NTC. Does he not know what he's saying? You know better?

Smith is very overrated due to the other defensemen on the team. Just because he's not a train wreck doesn't mean it was a good signing, and I think our fans will start to realize this in a few years.

But then they can revisit that they liked this signing when nearly every non-Ranger fan thinks this is an overpayment.

This is very true...
